But I have to admit, those thousands of dogs dying recently didn't look very good. I won't buy treats for my pets unless they are made in Canada.

I know you are an animal lover, so you boycotting Chinese pet food is not a surprise. I still think Chinese mass production has been a net benefit for Western consumers.
I'm not against Chinese imports to be honest. But I do think the demand has gotten too extreme to the point that corners are being cut. Sadly, our people always complain about our own health and standards, ignoring the heath and standards of the people making those products.
I can think of two shoe repair places in Vancouver and Richmond. One of them also cuts keys. haha But the guy I go to is really good. This little tiny Chinese man who barely speaks a word of English. But, man, can he fix shoes.

There is no such thing as a "good trade" when it comes to sacrificing quality. As the old adage goes "cheap is expensive" and it's no different when it comes to cheap and inferior Chinese products.

somewhat agree princess..initially everyone was euphoric over cheap priced goods...then the quality issues hit and the added replacement costs of using junk started to mount up and the discovery that many many products are toxic and dangerous to human health (including radioactive drywall etc,) so now people are starting to question the wisdom of one way trade in junk......contact lenses that blind people, food that is grown on toxic waste dumps, tools that snap when used, bearings that wear out prematurely and on and on and on.....i want my govt. that supposedly is guarding our health and the products that enter this country to step up to the plate and ban this junk...or at least make it easier for NA companies to set up manufacturing facilities once more.....bring back quality control i say.
Regarding electronics.....China actually makes little to no electronics..it is all Korean and Japanese....maybe assembled in China but the parts are manufactured in plants elsewhere...at least that's the way it was not long ago......
I divide my family's shopping between Walmart, Costco and Sobey's..
We also buy goods from Canadian Tire and Home Depot..
All of them are dependent on Chinese imports as far as I know..
Overall, I am usually satisfied with quality and safety.

we have now resorted to garage saleing to obtain old made in the USA household appliances...after going through three can openers this year alone...we finally found an old one at a garage sale for $.50...works like a dream....the dragon bought a Phillips made in the USA blender on Sat. at a garage sale for $1.00....it is at least 50 years old, looks brand new, weights about 20 lbs. and would chip a fvcking douglas fir....she fired it up and it works just dandy...can't wait to finish our 1960's kitchen collection....... :ugeek:

The ratio is for every single shoebox full of anything worth keeping you must make ten loads to the dump.
I try to buy stuff from other countries since China has some bad products, and a rep for Lead in stuff.
It's hard not to buy Chinese anymore though since most companies have moved there.
Stuff that you really need to stay away from is Food products, containers for food, and cooking products.
I think most other stuff is safe to a point just cheaply made.
Now you can get some good stuff, but from companies under license from major brands that care about quality.
It's not the people also, it's mostly the greed of a fast dollar so they make stuff cheap as they can because there is a demand.
Taiwan has a lot of good stuff, there metal is a lot better than China's, Electronics also.

Oh there is a few nicely dressed people in ours, but they matter now with all the trash, and rudeness.
I have been to 6 in out city, two in higher class areas, they are all the same.
Maybe a few more better dressed, but same low class trash mobbing the stores.
Nothing against the whole, but the majority is low class people in ours no matter the income.
Like I mentioned I shop there occasionally, and my mom dose, and the few friends I have.
All of them dress nicely, and is respectful to others. Me I'm not so respectful to the disrespectful people, I call a stinker a stinker, but polite till them.
Oh, there is nothing wrong shopping there, or buying what you wish, no offense people unless you stink, or rude in other ways.
Could be in any place, or store, walmart is just more widespread.
