Title: Fash: These Taiwan Blasts are terrible
Post by: cc on August 01, 2014, 02:42:56 AM
Taiwan gas blasts (over a very large area) in Kaohsiung kill at least 24 and injured about 270

A series of gas explosions in the southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung has killed 24 people and injured about 270 others, officials say.

The blasts rocked the city's Cianjhen district, scattering cars and blowing deep trenches in roads.

The exact cause of the gas leaks is not clear, but reports say the blasts were caused by ruptured pipelines.

"Because the explosion range is so far so it's really difficult to handle this situation immediately," Mr Chen said, adding that the blasts "caused a long-range hole, like a huge cave"

Not sure how it could happen over such a length of pipe - each explosion maybe loosened more pipe and exploded loosening more pipe etc.?? like a chain reaction?? .. Just a guess, but mate had a career in pipelines (not gas) and can't figure any other explanation for it to continue like  that assuming it did it on its own

Thank you for your concern cc li tarte..

What a terrible tragedy..

 :(

We are from the Southern part of Taiwan too, including some relatives in Kaohsiung..

They were not affected by the blast thankfully.

It looks like an earthquake of at least 7.5 on the Richter scale tore through that city.

I hope your relatives are safe Fash.

They were at the time. What I meant was that is was a series of explosions one after the other. I would imagine as the line pulled apart from the previous explosion, it then exploded at the new break ...  and repeated this process over and over for some time. I have never heard of this happening over such a huge length of pipe

Maybe not a good time to say this, but gas is the most volatile product you can put in a pipeline not crude oil.

True, far more volatile a medium. . That said, in the overall there have been few gas line problems ... certainly nothing like this one. Few with any medium measured against the vast footage of pipe lines in use.

I'd still like to hear the experts explain how this happened this way - apart from the horror of this one, I'd like to know how this could ever happen .. my technical side showing

Our house is heated by natural gas..

There are natural gas pipelines throughout the city of Calgary.

It makes me worry.

Don't worry too much, Fash! I'm sure those pipelines are in fine shape.

More terrible news from Asia:

QuoteBlast at China Car-Parts Supplier Kills at Least 68

At least 68 people were killed and about 187 injured in a major blast at a factory in eastern China that supplies the country's massive automobile industry and indirectly some of the biggest international brands as a subcontractor in the production of wheels, the company and state media reported.

A preliminary investigation suggests a dust blast caused the explosion early Saturday at the metal-polishing plant just outside Shanghai, in the Jiangsu province city of Kunshan, the reports said. More than 260 people were in the plant at the time and about 44 people were killed in the initial blast, while others died later, the reports said, suggesting the death toll may rise and that victims are being treated in various cities around Kunshan.

Combustible dust is a widely known industrial hazard that has led to deaths at factories around the world, including in China. Safety experts warn that in the absence of good ventilation a buildup of heat, oxygen and a material, often dusty particles such as pulverized metal, can spark massive explosions without warning.

What a world we live in. Seems like not a day goes by without explosions, conflicts and disasters.
