Title: I got my credit score today….
Post by: JOE on December 06, 2023, 11:14:07 PM
....to my surprise turns out it's 822.

I think the max is 900 in Canada.

Maybe its 850 in the US? I don't know how they max the score down there.

Anyway I consider myself very lucky.

At one time in my life I was just 425. I was in the cellar.

However I never gave up

Nor did I declare bankruptcy nor make a debt settlement

Glad too because I think that shows up on the credit report

However some friends of mine have not been so lucky. I've known several people who either had to file for bankruptcy or do a debt settlement. I feel sorry for them because i had almost been there.

So....while im certainly not rich at least I got good decent credit now. And if I pay the off an existing loan should be able to push it up to 850 or so

Credit is essential in our Western society. Man if you don't got no credit its hard ta git by

Having once been on the brink I'll try ta stay outta deep debt for the rest of my life. Id rather not go there ever again

But you have to use the credit wisely. Dude I used to know had five credit cards all maxed out. Anything he wanted he would buy and put on the card. He would see something and think "That's neat" and put it on the card. He would hear about an upcoming concert and he would buy tickets and put them on the card. We walked into a 7-11 one time and he put a Slurpee on his credit card.

Anyway we got talking about it and turns out he had 40 grand of debt on his cards (this was back in the 90s). I said "Hey have you ever thought about cutting back, you know maybe paying down the cards a bit?"

He said "Nah I figure that I'll never have it paid off and I'll always be in debt anyway so it really doesn't matter how high it gets".

Dunno whatever happened to him but it wouldn't surprise me if he's working in some D.C. Budget Office right now.

I was there once Ollie.

I had $40,000 in cc debt too. But I never declared bankruptcy. A person may suffer payin it off but in the end its worth it. i never gave up paying it down.

Bankruptcies and debt settlements affect a persons future credit. Credit is something a person should only uses in emergencies. Good ta have but don't break the glass unless absolutely necessary.

Going inta debt is like gambling actually.

Prowler, I have friends who've gone bankrupt and never recovered.

It's sad to see them where they are, having lost everything and now they are in a rut like that. One of them was from your Province. He's dead now & a large part the killed him was trying to escape debt and poverty.

Lotta times it's hard to avoid that if they were born poor, went through a divorce or had children to support or child support to pay.

What do I call these people for the fate I managed to avoid?

Losers?

Cripes for all the things said about him, even Donald Trump has more compassion than you. He said on many occasions wants to help those people, the forgotten working class, but you just wanna keep em down.

You're a conservative without a soul. I refer to those types as NeoCons.

But thanks for the reminder.
I don't mind actually as I'm procrastinating and putting it off.
Not good, eh? I shouldn't really do that.
I got lazy that's all.

Probably get it paid off sometime by earlynext year tho.

No sense in draining the account tho when the money could be invested right now like gic's, eh?

GICs are not paying a higher interest rate than a loan would be costing you, you idiot.

Not to mention that the interest earned with a GIC is taxable.

What was the loan for, Senile Joe?

It was a student loan I took out for a course.

actually I did it to avoid the Pandemic.
And that's what the government and health authorities wanted us to do anyway. Stay Inside. Stop the spread.

Turns out, that was the height of the spread and it was hitting people hard.

Several People were coming to class sick, coughing and wheezing away.

Even some of the instructors.

It was really quite bad around 2021/22.

COVID was real. It wasn't bullshit.

Luckily when I finished the class the Pandemic appeared to wane and the cases dropped quite dramatically.

The end of the Pandemic was like comin out of a storm.

Didn't you say members of your family came down with it quite hard, prowler?

They don't seem to count a Student Loan towards the Credit Score as much Prowler.

In fact, it didn't even seem to put a dent into mine

So I guess it gets a lower interest rate as well when paying it back. It doesn't seem to be a punitive debt, unlike consumer debt. As long as the student loan is paid off regularly they don't seem to mind if a person has just a little bit.

But I plant to get rid of it or most of it by next year. Maybe bringing it down 75% at very least. Getta get serous and get rid of it altogher before 2025, eh.

Was either that or go out inta an unhealthy workplace Prowler.
I still had to pay the rent and eat.

People were gettin' sick with covid back in 2021/22 when Covid was ripping through the world. Lotta people were dying.

I just used school as an excuse to avoid the Pandemic.
I didn't really like the course, yet it was better than catching COVID. But even in this course I took, a lotta people came down with it.

I know at the time, your province in Ontario was in lockdown Prowler.

We had social distancing measures, but BC was never in total lockdown like Ontario, eh? Your guys case count was a lot worse than ours too. You 'n Quebec. That's nothin to deride you guys about. But it was quite bad. It wasn't your guys fault. That was just the reality. The way it was. Ontario and Quebec had 75% of Canada's COVID case and death count.

Just use that to point out that COVID wasn't anything to dismiss like it was the common cold. It was quite severe. I knew people who died from it.

Are you dense?

The problem is not that you had to pay for school.  The problem is that you did not have liquid assets to pay for it.  At your old age, you should have had enough expendable liquid assets available to enroll the whole fuckin' class and take them out for beers after every lecture.

You are a bonafide stooge, Senile Joe.

Im not too worried about paying it off Prowler. I got about $10,000 Canadian or $7200 US left  to pay off. But I'll likely accelerate my payments on the loan in the new year. Probably around mid year I'll get the payments up to $5-600 a month.

Looked it up and there's currently no interest on Canada Student Loans.

https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6858596

So in some respects its like a free loan. I mean what car company will give you an interest free car loan eh? In which case theres no real incentive to pay it off right away if the money which would have gone into paying the student loan can go into a 5%+ GIC. Right Prowler? Cuz while that csl debt stands still remains the same, the gic accumulated interest and is worth more in the same amount of time the csl loan sits there. Meanwhile the $10,000 gic nets $500 + in interest

Mind you if the Tories get back in that interest free status may end. Thats why id rather pay it off before the next federal election which they say is scheduled in 2025.

I think life will become harder for many if the Tories get back in cuz they will cut spending and subsidies. However perhaps this is necessary if the deficit is too high. Many people wont like it tho

Why are you so angry, Prowler? LOL!

You shouldn't lose your temper on the Internet

Long story short Prowler, since its an interest free loan I figger I may as well put the money I owe to Student Loans into a TFSA or RRSP gic instead. Paying down the loan doesn't make any sense really. I could pay it down, but then it'd be money wasted that could make interest. $10,000 GIC in a TFSA will net at least $500 tax free while paying down an interest free $10,000 student loan right away doesn't get me ahead in any way. If it's the same amount I owe 1 year from now, nothing's gained by paying it down early.

I could buy some nice collector gold coins too, eh?

Like this, eh Prowler?

Well I could pay it off right away Prowler.

But what's the point if the loan is interest free and they're paying 5% on GICs?

May as well pay a bit off at a time, use the money that would otherwise go to paying down the loan and put it into a gic and make money, right?

that's like gittin a nice government subsidy that you wouldnt taking out a consumer loan, then buying something like a car, eh.

So essentially, that's like getting something extra for having take out the loan. And the interest alone can be put towards paying down the loan. I'd say not bad. Save on the interest and get somethin' back for free Prowler.
