Title: I'm interested in Collector Wines as an Investment
Post by: JOE on December 17, 2023, 10:29:16 PM
...anybody here done or is doing that?

Seems it'd be an easy way ta make a profit.

Basically put, buy a wine with a good year at its inception.

Then sit on the wine for 5-10+ years, wait for it to mature, then unload it, hopefully for a profit.

While a good bottle of wine say $500 and up seems expensive, relative to other things, like crypto currency or stocks, it actually isn't. ie - a single bitcoin is $40,000 US these days. A single share in a blue chip company can cost $1000 or more. And then there is no guarantee that these things will be worth more than when you bought them. In fact, they could go down quite a bit and the buyer might be forced to sell them at a loss. Such as in 401K plans or RRSPs when the buyer retires.

thing about wines, usually the buyer doesn't purchase them to hang on to forever. Of course, they age and at some point, probably no good anymore. so, they are a time-sensitive investment. Same time, if they're bought young, then mature, they can appreciate considerably. Like Bourdeaux wines.

Any thoughts on this? Feedback? Flaws in my assumptions? Caveats?

what are the pitfalls of buying wine as an investment?

Wines go bad over time plus there is the temptation to drink them.
