Title: Tomorrow is my last trip before I begin pre retirement annual vacation
Post by: Brent on January 24, 2024, 06:47:54 PM
After 34 years at Canadian Pacific, tomorrow's trip will be my last.

I turn 55 on April 25 and I officially retire May 1. I have to use up my annual vacation left over from 2023 plus 2024's AV, plus stat days, plus some banked time. That will carry me until May 1. :stars:

Congratulations!

55 is kind of young to retire though isn't it? You could still drive that train for many more years.

Not at all. I got my 85 points in. This is one of the perks of having a unionized job like CP that has a defined benefit pension plan.

I am really fit and healthy. I am going to collect that pension for at least three decades. :yeahhh:

Congratulations Mr Iron Horse Jockey. Thirty four years working for the same company is a long time. And I am sure some days you will miss "working on railroad." Not all and perhaps not that many. But, you will some people after all that time wotking with them.

Are you and your wife still planning on living abroad? If so, perhaps Jo and Jo and I can come visit you.

Right on brother. You worked for your money and I am glad to see ya leaving with a good railway pension.

Start enjoying your life. I started working like a donkey when I retired. And I am loving every minute of my new line of work. I hope you find something you like to do too.

I feel sorry for anyone that "loves their job" because that means they do not get enough enjoyment from other things in life.

It is all relative.

You are a sorry sack of shit, Senile Joe, who likes to be told where to go at what time and what to do when you get there.  I would be miserable if I had to live like you.  But a small brained slug like you will mistake contentment for happiness because with dull intelligence comes dull emotions.

So when someone like Brent is happy about leaving his job, it does not mean he "really hated" it.  It means he has other things that he enjoys much more.

This is why dumb fucks like Senile Joe should work until he is dead while people who really know how to enjoy life should retire young.

You can collect a heavily reduced Canada Pension Plan at 60 here. Our Old Age Security kicks in at 65. But, defined benefit pension plans are not paid for through general revenues like OAS is or mandated payroll taxes like CPP.

His pension is a private defined benefit plan. Not many companies have them anymore.

We have a private defined benefit pension at Canadian Pacific. I can't collect CPP until I am at least sixty, and it will be cut back 36 percent if I take it that early. I can't collect Old Age Security until I am at least sixty five. And my income will be too high to collect the Guaranteed Income Supplement.

None of those three pay enough to live on. In Canada, you have to have company matching RRSP's or a private pension. Otherwise you end up a broke seventy year old like Joe. I would not wish that on my worst enemy.

Yeah but when you are on a pension in Oz, everything you buy is cheaper for instance a prescription that might cost $25 will only cost $7.60.... and your council rates that might be over $2,000 a year cost you $1,000.

In actual fact life on pensions in Australia are good but if you are a drinker, smoker or gambler then your pension doesn't really stretch.

There are discounts here too. But, old Jock's pension aint like a compulsory public pension.

I will have next to nothing in my CPP because I worked outside Canada most of my working life.

We don't discriminate like that..

If the pension is $470 a week... everyone gets that whether you have worked for 0 years or 40 years.

That is like our Old Age Security. We have three different tupes of public pensions.
-Canada Pension plan which you have to contribute to to collect.
-Old Age Security which everybody 65 and over collects. I think it's about $730 a month.
-Guaranteed Income Supplement. It is about $320 a month. You have to be 65 for that one too. You have to be under a certain income level for that. I think it is about $70,000 a year. Old Jock won't qualify for that when he turns 65. Not with a golden plated pension from Canadian Pacific plus his CPP.

Well, yer certainly lucky DKG.

the nation where you or your parents came from...aint.
If yer parents managed to get themselves and you outta there yer very lucky.
Many South Koreans live in dire poverty, get measely pensions, are forced ta eat outta soup kitchens or perform menial jobs. Some grannies even have to prostitute themselves ta make ends meet, eh?

The fact that there is even a pension in our country is a miracle in itself.

Hardly existed prior to WWII, eh? And if it did it was miniscule.
People often worked til they died. I had one grandfather like that who died after WWII. He was a farmer. He had a family of 14 to support. One day he was working in the field & he collapsed. Dead just like that and I think he wasn't even 55. i never even met or knew him as he died over 10 years before I was born. I'm older today than when he died.

Actually I had this discussion with my older sister the other day.
The decade she was born was just when old age pensions started ta kick in.
People JUST started to get them in masse during the late 1940s or early 1950s. I actually remembered some of these people myself.

And back then, a good chance was many people were dead by age 65.

Actually Prowler, one thing I think retired people should/ought to do - is to start SMALL, low-risk businesses. Side hustles, ways of making extra income in order to fund retirement.

And this isn't so different to what former Conservative leader Erin O'Toole once advocated. I think he mentioned that and it was a good idea that he put forth.

So I'm just taking a page out of his playbook.

I don't think it's realistic for Canadians to expect the state to provide for them with everything in the future. I think many retirees have to be willing to step up and find ways to generate extra income for themselves.

Well, I know the guy who started one of the original collector comic book stores in Vancouver 50 years ago. Guess what? He's still working along with his partner/wife. They have their own store in Vancouver. They are both in their 70s.

The guy's a real pioneer and a local legend in the industry.
I went to his original store way back in the 80s
I see him and his wife at shows all the time.

BTW, he's a cancer survivor too.

While the guy could go into an old folks home, he just doesn't wanna fade away and sit on his butt. He and significant other want to do something, interact with the public, meet people.

Nicest guy ya'd ever want to meet.

I don't think he had a lot of education either.
He just had enough spunk to be his own boss/man.
Gotta admire somebody like that.

Perhaps he/she are not typical retirees but goes ta show ya people don't have to fade away in some hole.

And btw, a lot of retirees in canada seem to expect a cradle to the grave social security system for eternity.

and all I can say to them is - watch out. Their expectations may be very unrealistic.

My mom and dad who worked hard all their lives, expected it and got it, but future retirees may not be so lucky.

I got enough money to retire DKG, but I'd rather stay active.

I'm very healthy for my age.

One of my brothers has Type 1 diabetes, so he can't really work anymore even if he wanted to. He has to be extremely careful about exerting himself too much.

Another brother recently was diagnosed with prostate cancer so he's gotta take it easy too.

Both of them HAVE to retire just to save themselves.

maybe you're aware of this in your job, but most people seem to get health problems by the time they reach 50 or 55. I see it in my friends, some who are younger than me.

But I seem to be one of the few actual healthy people among the bunch.
All my brothers sisters and inlaws have health problems.

Oh and BTW, you think I was taking a potshot about South Korea and its treatment of Seniors, but I think Japan has a similar problem too. They are both relatively wealthy countries now, but they don't help their seniors out as much as they could.

Japanese seniors get less and have to worker longer than Canadians in order to get a pension. For all the shortcomings of the Canadian system, seniors get  more than Korea or Japan.
