Title: Bored of the stereotype
Post by: ghost on October 10, 2014, 11:35:57 AM
I've got to admit, I'm tired of the fat jokes. They were amusing at first, but now they're just irritating.

A certain mentally disturbed person here seems to think that he can counterattack anything I say by calling me 400 pounds. Of course if he had any real brains, he'd be able to actually hold a debate without resorting to the same old boring grade school insult.

It's not like who I am is a secret. I was outted by another nutter ages ago.

So I'm going to post some pictures. Some of them can be found on my blog. Some are private. And there's even one without makeup!

First is my media picture. It's the one that's used more often than not at book signings. As you can see, the pic is a few years old from when my hair was longer.

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll117/ghostofnothing/IMG_8167-Rev_zps1aa6284d.jpg%22%3E%3CLINK_TEXT%20text=%22http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll11%20...%20a6284d.jpg%22%3Ehttp://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll117/ghostofnothing/IMG_8167-Rev_zps1aa6284d.jpg%3C/LINK_TEXT%3E%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

This one was taken a few weeks ago. My hair is shorter now. Feel free to make fun of the haircut cause I don't particularly like it.

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll117/ghostofnothing/IMG_2294_zpsa435189b.jpg%22%3E%3CLINK_TEXT%20text=%22http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll11%20...%2035189b.jpg%22%3Ehttp://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll117/ghostofnothing/IMG_2294_zpsa435189b.jpg%3C/LINK_TEXT%3E%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

One without makeup! OMG!

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll117/ghostofnothing/IMG_2215_zpsd96347ac.jpg%22%3E%3CLINK_TEXT%20text=%22http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll11%20...%206347ac.jpg%22%3Ehttp://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll117/ghostofnothing/IMG_2215_zpsd96347ac.jpg%3C/LINK_TEXT%3E%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

And the grand finale. One taken about a month ago when I was at Yellowstone Park. Feel free to admire the cute puppy.

Look ghost, don't let the likes of Oak get to you. I admit I did it too, but I was wrong and I am embarrassed to go back and read those posts now. I think I mentioned before, I found it amusing the way he got hornung wound up, but that hardly takes much effort. OL banned Hornung long ago and Oak is still bumping stupid threads about him. In other words, Oak is not so amusing anymore.

Oak pushes stupid stereotypes about me being some cheap "Asian passport ho" or some ridiculous shit like that too. Depending on my mood at the time I read his horseshit, it can get to me.

I think he may be a little jealous because both of us have enjoyed success in our careers. There are still guys like that ya know. It's just a thought, but I do believe it's a REAL possibility.

BTW, nice pics(gorgeous fucking hair BTW), but I still can't get an idea of your age? Don't say anything if you don't feel like it. It's just that I usually have an idea about a person's age, but with you I am drawing a blank sheet. ac_umm

Oh, Oak isn't getting to me. What actually got to me was a few weeks ago when someone on Memebee posted a fat ass and someone else claimed it was mine. And then others started bitching to Evs that personal pictures need to be taken down. I think I was more offended that people automatically thought that ass was mine!!!!! LOL

There is nothing Oak can say that would actually make me run and cry. I'm hoping that by doing this, he might have to scramble to try and find a new insult. But alas, I'm pretty sure he's going to continue calling me fat. As we all know, Oak isn't very good when it comes to finding new material.

I'm 41, Shen. OMG I said it! haha I'm lucky tho. I was blessed with good skin.

For whatever reason, you never dropped enough clues as to your age, so I couldn't even guess. It's a bizarre hobby I know, but I try to guess poster's ages. With you, I had no idea whatsoever. Now I know.

BTW, ur the same age as Renee.

P.S. I never saw that pic, but there is some immature troll on VF calling you a heroin addict. ac_rollseyes

I like to think that being a YA writer keeps me young at heart. haha I can be both childish and mature, depending on the day.

I was a late bloomer. In my early 20's, I was more interested in playing in a band than anything else. I didn't go back to Uni until I was 26. I've always been more interested in doing things I love than doing what's expected of me. All I know is that the older I get, the more I get to know myself, and the more fun I have.

Yeah, that one made me giggle. I did a lot of drugs in my younger days and admitted that I smoked heroin once (actually it was twice). That gave .. the perfect ammunition.

For the record, I haven't touched drugs since I was 25 and smoked my last joint.

It would appear we both have a bit of a non-conformist streak in us. I occasionally wonder what might have been if I had pursued music. My parents would NOT hear of it of course, but still.  ac_umm

You did it once, therefore you do it everyday and twice on Sundays. The same assholes gave Berry a hard time too even though it was like decades ago she made mistakes.

The Arts are hard. So many get into them, so few ever go anywhere.

I loved playing in a band. I loved being on stage and wearing crazy outfits. But I finally reached a point in my life where it just wasn't fun anymore. For me, it was always about the storytelling, whether it was in song or written word. So I went back to writing. I'm much better at writing. lol

Funny enough, one of my old bandmates just told me he's going to California because Duran Duran has taken a liking to his new band and wants them to go on tour with them.

My Mom hated the music. She always said "It's a nice hobby, but you need to get a real job". Funny, she said the same thing about writing. Now she tells everyone how proud she is for my persistence and brags to people in bookstores.

Oh I've heard that one from my parents many times. The only difference is I never actually made an attempt at making a career of music. It was more just a teenage girl being a dreamer. They prolly would've disowned me if I had.

Funny, you mention about your mom being proud now. I read an interview once with the lead singer of Nickelback and how his father said the same thing to his sons. Now he likes to drive the tour bus. ac_toofunny

I think parents only want what's best for their children. And let's face it, like I said, so very few are successful in the arts. For every top ten band, there are hundreds of thousands of hopefuls.

As a parent, you want your children to have something to fall back on. You don't want them to be the fifty-year-olds still working crap jobs and talking about how their band is still gonna make it.

But if your child is successful...yeah, you sure want to brag about it. hahaha

Yep and I think we can all agree on that. Following your dreams is admirable, but if you DON'T succeed life can really suck without a plan B. This is just reality and young people need to understand that.

I think the big problem is the myth today that one can do whatever they want if they try hard enough. It's simply not true. I wanted to be an astronaut as a child, but I just don't have the brains for science. There's nothing in the world that could ever change that.

I worked hard for free for many years. I worked day jobs I didn't particularly enjoy (I even did sales at Xerox for a while-worst job ever) and I wrote in the evenings.

Kids today seem to believe that they can graduate Uni and get their dream job in the blink of an eye. Funny enough, when I do school talks, I get a lot of teachers asking me to explain how difficult the arts is. But sadly, no matter how much I try and put a realistic spin on things, they still look at me and don't believe it.

Still, going into space would be freaking amazing. haha

I think it's hard for kids that age to realize the chances of failure are prolly greater than their chances of success. I got to talk with kids at a reserve school about career opportunities in engineering. Now this is a field where there are lucrative offers before graduation. That wasn't the biggest selling pint for the kids though....the very real possibility of an overseas expat position was. You on the other hand should prolly play down this part of your career.

I hear you Ghost, I get tired of the fat jokes too. But not because assholes resort to them but because they are generally so unimaginative and worn out. I've been fat all my life and I think I've heard just about all of them by now and many of them hundreds of times. Like you, I find them to be low brow, boring insults that were already stale back when I was in High School. It tells a very sad story when supposed adults still resort to schoolyard level name calling because they don't have the brains to respond with anything of substance. It only goes to show that far too many people in this world never mentally progress past the 8th grade.

As Shen already mentioned we are the same age and I have to say, you look fantastic. I applaud you for having the courage to put it all out there and use it as a big "fuck you" to the trolls and assholes that have been spreading rumors about you.

JK Rowling said it best.

"Fat' is usually the first insult a girl throws at another girl when she wants to hurt her.

I mean, is 'fat' really the worst thing a human being can be? Is 'fat' worse than 'vindictive', 'jealous', 'shallow', 'vain', 'boring' or 'cruel'? Not to me; but then, you might retort, what do I know about the pressure to be skinny? I'm not in the business of being judged on my looks, what with being a writer and earning my living by using my brain...

I went to the British Book Awards that evening. After the award ceremony I bumped into a woman I hadn't seen for nearly three years. The first thing she said to me? 'You've lost a lot of weight since the last time I saw you!'

'Well,' I said, slightly nonplussed, 'the last time you saw me I'd just had a baby.'

What I felt like saying was, 'I've produced my third child and my sixth novel since I last saw you. Aren't either of those things more important, more interesting, than my size?' But no – my waist looked smaller! Forget the kid and the book: finally, something to celebrate!

I've got two daughters who will have to make their way in this skinny-obsessed world, and it worries me, because I don't want them to be empty-headed, self-obsessed, emaciated clones; I'd rather they were independent, interesting, idealistic, kind, opinionated, original, funny – a thousand things, before 'thin'. And frankly, I'd rather they didn't give a gust of stinking chihuahua flatulence whether the woman standing next to them has fleshier knees than they do. Let my girls be Hermiones, rather than Pansy Parkinsons."

I know I'll be called out for making weigh comments as I have been doing it as of late to a poster.  I've had struggles with my own weight issues which were more about perception than reality so I should make comment but I chose to anyway.  People's weight is a real non-issue for me but I can't stand when people pretend they are something they aren't.

All true Renee which is why I cannot post on VF without 2-3 rum mojitos in me. The lack of maturity is tough to read without the aid of alcohol. I think pretty much every single woman has had issues with their weight at one point or another. I've been bigger and I've been smaller. Right now, I still want to lose another 20lbs.

I just think there are so many more important things in the world than making fun of someone for their weight.

We all come in different shapes and sizes. The real way to judge a person's character is to see how they treat others. Yes, I've made a few good cracks at people in the past, I can be an asshole with the best of them. But I don't believe in judging others for their looks. Stupidity, yes, but looks, no.

In the whole scheme of things, we will be remembered for the things we say and do. At my father's funeral, many strangers came up to me and told me how kind my Dad was. How he always had a smile for everyone. How friendly he was. That's how I'd rather be remembered.

I'm not worried. I'm in the public eye and there are a lot of pictures of myself on the internet. Lots of interviews too. Some of them are flattering, others make me want to curl up and cower.

I learned a long time ago by being involved in the size acceptance community that "fat" is not the evil word that many would like us to believe that it is. In reality it is just another descriptor no different than thin, tall, short, etc. It is only in how we perceive and relate to the word that it becomes the derogatory insult. Unfortunately old habits and prejudicial attitudes die hard in a society where "thin" is the overriding qualifier for female beauty. The sad an inescapable realities of our society is that "fat" women are viewed as damaged goods, broken individuals and undeserving of equal treatment socially and economically. Historically these are perceptions based on stereotypes put forth by the media, the medical community the government and a whole host of other cultural entities. This is an inescapable truth and I don't see it getting any better any time soon.

The saddest part is that most of these perceptions are untrue. I really don't think anyone here thinks of me as broken or damaged anymore than the next person but if they were to meet me face to face without knowing who I am, I am willing to bet that most people here would view and treat me very differently. I'm not saying everyone would but I could almost name all the names of the individuals on these forums that would view me with the stereotypical perceptions that most people have toward fat women.

I too have daughters and I worry constantly as a parent that whether or not I did enough to instill a sense of self worth in them so that they do not fall into the appearance obsession trap. I pray all the time they will understand and accept the concept that who they are is much more than just a dress size or numbers on a scale. I especially worry about my oldest daughter in this. She is so much like me in appearance and genetic tendencies that it is frightening but she is much more sensitive than I am or ever was. I'm worry that for her, resisting the societal pressures to conform to an unrealistic body image will be especially hard.

That's good, but not all of us are built that way. When I was a teen I had bad acne. This made me feel so self-conscious. We all know the comments; "pizza face", "connect the dots", "aids face", blah, blah, fucking blah. I tried every anti-acne product on the market and went to dermatologists, but the only real cure was getting older.

This was combined with being an immigrant kid with no siblings and awkward English. I really hated when people pulled their eyes back in front of me. I was not popular until my final year of high school when I started to grow a few curves.

The point I am making is that kids are cruel and if one is in any way different they WILL be ridiculed. I have long made my peace with my tormentors in school. When you are an adult and another adult makes comments about your appearance, nationality or the way someone talks we know that person is still stuck in grade 10 mode. They are truly pathetic.

This one was taken a few weeks ago. My hair is shorter now. Feel free to make fun of the haircut cause I don't particularly like it.

No, you haven't because such a video doesn't exist. There is one interview I did three years ago where I was forty pounds heavier than I am now. That was about six months after having ankle surgery and I wasn't in my best shape.

I will admit, I was sitting in a horrid chair and the camera wasn't positioned well, and I did look bigger than I was. I was mortified. haha

I will tell you guys a secret tho. Gary Oak went over to Goodreads and tried to give my books bad reviews. It wasn't hard to figure out it was him. I'll give you all hints. He writes in a very specific way that's easy to recognize. Also, if you're going to try and slam YA books, it helps if you don't praise a bunch of non-fiction books first. Books that you've mentioned on the Memebee forum.

For the record, the reviews were removed for being biased and trolling.

I laughed it off at the time and sent an email to the Goodreads team. Like I said, they agreed it was trolling and removed the reviews.
