Title: China Goes Overboard for APEC
Post by: Romero on November 10, 2014, 06:44:23 PM
QuoteWhen it comes to China's international prestige, no price is too high, no measure too small.

With President Obama and other world leaders headed to Beijing this weekend for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting, schools and government agencies have been shuttered. Half the city's cars have been banned from the streets. Much of the capital has gone into lockdown.

Couples seeking to marry (or divorce, for that matter) will have to stem their passions.

Even the dead will have to wait, as some mortuaries are forbidding a clothes-burning ritual at funerals until most foreign dignitaries leave town on Nov. 14.

To ensure blue, pollution-free skies, scores of factories across the region have been shut down, including the heating supply for the entire neighboring city of Tianjin, where nighttime temperatures in the mid-30s are forecast.

Preparations this time also have included questionable human rights tactics, with many petitioners and government protesters rounded up and arrested ahead of the meeting to prevent potentially embarrassing criticisms of the government.

And in Huairou, the northern Beijing suburb that is hosting the summit, almost 9,000 houses have been demolished and their residents relocated to build quaint, Disney-like streets of fake-ancient Chinese teahouses, an effort that began as early as three years ago, according to state-run media.

On the security front, Beijing has sent swarms of police officers onto the streets and has organized tens of thousands of security volunteers, elderly men and women dressed in standard-issue red-and-gray windbreakers, to report suspicious behaviors.

In recent weeks, the magnitude of overpreparation in state media reports has begun veering into the realm of bizarre.

To staff the conference, the government weeded through more than 8,000 candidates and chose 2,280 finalists, who had to endure rigorous training to relearn how to sit, stand, walk and even smile, according to the People's Daily, the party's official mouthpiece.

I am not crazy about the expense, but I do like the proactive way of dealing terror threats. They are not going to let some Xinjiang splittist terror group to rain on their parade.

Of course. I respect China for this. Funny, but the  countries other than China that best deal with radicals is the islamic counties themselves.

Countries  ruled by Multi-Cult unicorns? Not so much.

The Greater Essex County District School Board, which runs 75 schools in Windsor, Ontario, and other nearby towns, has circulated a memo to its schools saying that Remembrance Day ceremonies are optional for those children whose families might object to it.

n case you were wondering which families they might be referring to, the school board didn't say specifically but pointed teachers to two Muslim-themed websites, including the story about the first Muslim soldier in the Canadian Forces who wore a hijab, an Islamic head covering.

Most islamics are taught and instructed at home, ar themosque and at school if it is islamic that matters ... their country does not matter... but that's not new news

That is really sad.

I was watching Global Edmonton news when I caught this.
QuoteEDMONTON — Dolls being sold in an Edmonton liquidation store are causing a stir for what's written on their packaging: "terrorist" dolls.

With memorials set across the country, and attacks in Ottawa and Quebec fresh in many minds, the word "terrorist" is a sensitive one for some.

Cheryl Ann Holtz first saw the dolls when her friend posted a picture of one on Facebook. The friend found them Sunday night at Bianca Amor's liquidation supercentre in Edmonton. Her Facebook post reportedly received so much attention, that she had to delete it.

Holtz says she sees the word as "racist" labelling; and believes it's offensive to all Canadians, regardless of their race.

"I think it just sends the wrong message and could be hurting a lot of people without people realizing that."

The dolls are made in China and look like a knock-off of Living Dead dolls, popular collection made in the U.S. These dolls even say the words 'Living Dead Dolls' on the package.

For Holtz, there's only one thing that should be done with them.

"I would like them taken off the shelves and taken off the market and banned."

Really? Shutting down factories and keeping a city of millions in the freezing cold is dealing with terror threats?

The forced relocation of thousands of citizens is dealing with terror threats? Regulating how people are allowed to sit, stand, walk and smile?

That's even more silly than believing pigeons need to receive anal security checks.

You're half right. The Chinese government is proactively dealing with "terror threats" - the government's own people.

You believe everything you read on line if it fits your agenda. I was talking with my cousin in Beijing last night and he never mentioned freezing in the dark. He didn't seem to mind the security precautions either. Life hasn't really changed much more for him than the Vancouver winter Olympics did for you. You won't find that in the links you post though.

I heard about banning burning of wood and low quality coal in traditional Peking villages to improve air quality..

I believe that happened long ago in Taipei, but Taipei is warmer than Peking.

That was only for a few days of APEC. It's back to all smog all the time!

Actually, China has been razing traditional hutongs for a while now to make room for modern communities. It would be like Canadian cities having houses/neighbourhoods from another era complete with blacksmith shops, horses, shared bathrooms for an entire street and burning wood and coals in inefficient fireplaces for heat. Might create a special tourist area for it, but like Beijing, Canadian cities would never allow it. The people of Canada would be embarrassed by it as are most Chinese who want traditional hutongs gone.
