It was just announced today that Australia have put into motion the plans to build their own nuclear-powered submarines.
Australia's nuclear-powered submarines - SSN-AUKUS - will be based on the UK's next generation design that incorporates technology from all 3 nations (AUS/UK/US) including cutting edge US submarine technologies.

Yeah great... 15 minutes south of me makes me a military target.
Thanks Albo.
Good for Australia. China will be cautious.
In the event of war, Australia's geographic isolation makes any invasion incredibly difficult, and any attacks would most likely be limited to missile strikes on military facilities, particularly against US interests.
The three Virginia Class subs would definitely be a step-up in defence in the interim for Australia.
