    The Animal Protection Act enables Peace Officers to respond to animals in distress or animals that have been abandoned. Peace Officers are given their authority through the Peace Officer Act.

With reasonable and probable grounds, Peace Officers, can enter property, other than a dwelling, to investigate whether animals are provided with adequate care. Animals in distress or abandoned may be taken into custody or euthanised. The penalties for non compliance with the Animal Protection Act and Regulations includes monetary penalties to a maximum of $20, 000, prohibition of animal ownership for a period determined by the courts, and any other terms and conditions the court deems appropriate.
