Title: The Stanley Cup
Post by: JOE on May 30, 2025, 07:04:27 AM
...like many Canadians I hope the Edmonton Oilers win the Stanley Cup.

But in the back of my mind, there's always this nagging doubt that the outcome is fixed. That the NHL always an American team, particularly from the US sunbelt to win.

I dunno maybe Connor McDavid is a big enough draw that the League will finally let a Canadian team win.

We'll see. I'm hopeful. But at the same time skeptical.

But still, many think that the NHL fixes the Stanley Cup for certain teams to win.

There are  accusations that the NHL fixed a series even with 2 American teams.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-7zm4A4iUO4

..and that US sunbelt teams are favored to win.

Incidentally, that team that used to be in Arizona was moved to Utah, and its average attendance is only about 11,000 spectators a game. Even less than the struggling Arizona franchise that was abandoned avatar_Oliver the Second llie.

What kind of league management is that?

They could move it to Quebec, Saskatchewan or some Northern US city and fill up the rink.

I believe the Oilers have a better shot to win the cup than last year.  Their lineup is slightly better stacked against the Panthers.

There are 2 things that can blow the Oiler's chances.
1. Stuart Skinner- he is getting better, but I still don't know if he has completely shed his choke artist reputation.
2. Zach Hyman is out for the entire series. His physical style of play will be missed.

I sincerely hope the Oilers win the Cup avatar_Shen Li Shen because if they do moving forward it's somewhat doubtful that the NHL will allow a Canadian or small market team win the championship again.

Perhaps they might allow the Oilers to win one this time cuz Connor McDavid is a Big Star in his Prime & the NHL needs a Big Star of Gretzky caliber to promote it.

Still think the NHL is fixed.

Actually I hope you are right and I am wrong avatar_Shen Li Shen.

I guess I'm just pissed off at the way the NHL is run & by whom. Gary Bettman is a horrible commissioner.

The NHL moved 2 completely thriving & viable franchises built by their local communities- Quebec & Winnipeg. Created another failed one in Arizona which should never have existed at all that destroyed the original Winnipeg franchise. Atlanta was also a failure which had to be rescued and moved to Winnipeg which had been a success to begin with.

Quebec was really a shame because they essentially gave Colorado a bunch of Free Stanley Cups by a city which built them up - Quebec.

And yes there was at least 1 verifiable time where a team was robbed on National television of a potential Stanley Cup - Buffalo in 1999. A goal that was allowed that shouldn't have been.

Awarded to Dallas. And in order to validate that victory the NHL later changed the foot in the crease rule which was designed to prevent goalie injuries. Subsequent to that players take runs at goalies now thereby shortening their careers.

That's how Chicago won at least 1 of its Cups when 1 of their players continuously charged the goaltenders of the opposing teams while in their crease. Dustin Byfuglien a notable violator. That guy was a malicious fraud.

The NHL is not a well run league and it shows overt favoritism to certain teams. Contrast this to other sports such as football baseball and basketball where upsets happen & the little guy wins. The idea of an upstart Canadian team like the Toronto Raptors winning the championship won't happen in today's NHL.

I think the worst conspiracy theories are the ones that are sports related.  Seriously?  Sports is another form of entertainment that usually doesn't fit any theory of conspiring to fool the fans.  Yes, there have been scandals such as point shaving, fixing a game, etc, but an entire league doing a conspiracy?  Just put on your straightjacket and go away.

The Oilers should've traded for a Stanley Cup goalie last year. And because they have a very weak goaltender, Edmonton has got to stay out of the penalty box.

Absolutely. A league that size you cannot tell me with a straight face that every last individual associated with it is doing it for the love of the game or the holy grail of prestige and bragging rights that comes with winning a trophy. It might shake out that way for a good many players and officials, but it assuredly does NOT shake out that way for every last one of them.

Anyone that pretends otherwise is being either disingenuous or incredibly naïve.

Quote from: DKG on June 10, 2025, 10:06:36 AMI can tell you have never played sports.
You can tell whatever you like. Phys Ed was a mandatory subject throughout the first ten years of my schooling however and a failing grade in it or any other subject on the syllabus precluded advancement to the next grade. So there goes your theory.

For what it's worth, I excelled at Wogball (soccer) early on and basketball (runners up in grade 5, premiers in grade 6). Both of these were extra-curricular activities, as were my forays into Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Muay Thai and Zen Do Kai (a freestyle form of martial arts which borrowed heavily from other martial arts disciplines). Came in handy on the school oval when playing Thugby (Rugby League) or Aerial Ping-Pong (Aussie Rules) and the tournaments I participated in allowed for more creative exploits than the regimented garbage insisted upon by the Board of Education.

I've been around long enough to know that towel-flicking rump slapping sports are for faggots that hunt in packs. I don't enjoy hiding behind a team's performance and can measure my worth against my own personal best. Or against an assailant/assailants as the case may be. Way more character building and a better ethic to have in today's world for sure.

Florida's playing style reminds me of the 1990's New Jersey Devils. Both teams can frustrate the best offensive teams. Bobrovsky is good, but he is no Martin Brodeur who was one of the absolute best to strap on the pads.
