Here's the deal, plain and simple. BC Ferries, the lifeline for British Columbia's coastal folks, hands a $1 billion contract to China Merchants Industry Weihai Shipyards, a Chinese state-owned outfit with military ties, to build four new ferries. The money? A low-interest loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB), a federal body under the government where Freeland struts as Transport Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

On June 20, 2025, she writes to B.C.'s Mike Farnworth, whining about cybersecurity risks, China's trade attacks (100% tariffs on canola, 25% on pork), and the total shafting of Canadian shipbuilders. Sounds like she cares, right?

The CIB, under her government's watch, is the one coughing up the billion bucks for this deal. The truth hit today, and it's a kick in the teeth: Freeland's playing shocked while her government funds the very thing she's crying about.

Let's call it what it is: a two-faced stunt. Freeland sobs over Canadian jobs while her government sends $1 billion to Chinese workers, leaving shipyards like Seaspan out to dry.
Why?

Canadian builders couldn't match China's state-backed, dirt-cheap labor. So, she gripes about lost jobs but backs a deal that screws Canadian workers.

Then there's the security angle, she flags cyber risks and China's military ties, backed by reports from the Canadian Communications Security Establishment about Beijing's hacking habits. Yet, her government's loan could let those risks sneak into our ferry system, a key link if tensions over Taiwan or the Pacific blow up. And the kicker? Her letter doesn't mention the CIB's billion-dollar role.

Either she didn't know, which makes her clueless, or she did and kept quiet, which makes her a liar. Pick your poison, both are pathetic.
Canadians are pissed, and they damn well should be. On X, @MarcNixon24 rips into the loss of $1 billion in Canadian contracts and zero jobs. @KirkLubimov slams the lack of Canadian steel, calling out China's subsidized edge.

Even B.C. Premier David Eby, no stranger to political games, bitches about the feds favoring East Coast ferries over B.C. The public's had it with this double-dealing nonsense.

BC Ferries says Weihai's bid was the best - cheapest, fastest, yadda yadda. But that's a weak excuse when Canadian yards like Seaspan couldn't compete with China's rigged system. Freeland's team might claim she's just one part of the government, but as a top dog in cabinet, she's neck-deep in this.

Her letter's a performance, not a principle, meant to dodge blame while her government bankrolls the betrayal much to our horror. When one conjurs the image of a rolling dumpster fire, let this be the scene that comes first to mind.

This hits Canadians hard.

Economically, it's a billion dollars that could've fueled jobs here, not in Beijing. Security-wise, it's playing roulette with our infrastructure against a regime known for cyber tricks.

Politically, it's a spit in the face -  Freeland acts horrified while her government writes the check. This isn't about ferries; it's about a government that picks foreign wallets over Canadian workers, ignores security threats, and has the audacity to fake shock when caught.

Chrystia Freeland , do your damn job. Back the calls from MPs Dan Albas   and Jenny Kwan   for a full probe. Demand the CIB explain why it's funneling our money to China. Push to rework this deal to put Canadian jobs and security first.

Anything less is a cop-out, a disgrace to your office, and a straight-up betrayal of every Canadian who trusted you to have their back. Fix this, or get out of the way.

Americans have chosen investment, jobs, new markets, freedom of speech and secure borders.  Like Singapore has.

The would get the revenue from a pipeline to the West Coast instead of Canada. There is little wonder as to why the average American is now sixty percent richer than the average Canadian.

How's this for a win-win deal? Alberta lets Premier David Eby, his B.C. NDP government and radical, anti-development First Nations group live in their little "green" bubble west of the Rockies while Alberta finds an investor or investors to build a pipeline to the West Coast through Montana, Idaho and Washington state.

Earlier this week, that's what Alberta Premier Danielle Smith suggested could happen if B.C. and First Nations insist on blocking a second oil pipeline from Alberta to the coast.

Alberta would prefer to ship to northern B.C. You know, national pride and all that. Plus the route is shorter, so therefore cheaper.

But if Alberta can get its oil to the West Coast, and from there on to the booming markets of Asia, what does it matter if that oil is loaded onto tankers in Prince Rupert, B.C., Longview, Wash., or some other Pacific Northwest terminal?

Eby has been adamantly against a second pipeline. He has insisted he will do what he can to stop a line to northern B.C. and he will stand in the way of any attempt to lift the Trudeau-era ban on seagoing tanker shipments along B.C.'s northern coast.

Eby has allowed that a second pipeline to the existing tanker terminal in Burnaby might be possible. He'll think about it.

But let's save him the trouble of racking his brain over such a compromise. Let's tell him right now he can have his little eco-Xanadu on the Left Coast, with slowed development and no added resource income. Alberta will find a route through less hostile territory.

Indeed, B.C.'s hostility to resource transportation is why Nutrien, the giant Saskatchewan potash exporter, decided to build a new $1-billion export terminal along the Columbia River in Washington rather than bang their heads against the wall trying to please Eby, his government and a consortium of First Nations that call themselves the Coastal First Nations.

Coastal First Nations are actually an anti-oil lobby group, funded by lefty American foundations, like the Tides Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies, whose stated goal is to landlock Canadian oil.

When he was attorney general of B.C. back in 2018, Eby instructed provincial prosecutors not to bring charges against scores of people who were squatting illegally on land belonging to Trans Mountain and blockading construction of the pipeline's tanker terminal in Burnaby.

By why not rescue the committed eco-warrior from his pipeline dilemma and just say, "Fine, a pipeline and all the jobs, economic activity and government revenues it will generate are too upsetting to you, we'll save you those sleepless nights and ask our southern neighbours for permission to construct a line across their territory."

When Nutrien announced in November that it would build its new potash terminal in development-friendly Washington state, Eby and federal Transport Minister Steve MacKinnon described the move as a betrayal of the national interest.

But the national interest cuts both ways. It is just as much in the national interest, perhaps more so, to get large-scale projects built that advance the country's economy, lessen our dependence on the U.S. and bring in billions to government coffers for hospital, schools, social and recreational services.

The premier of one province and a First Nations lobby group can't just declare what is and isn't in the national interest and decide for the whole country that a megaproject can't go ahead.

This little natural BC gas pipeline extension that will have a negligible affect on our GDP took a year just to approve.

Canada is an energy superpower — just not at home
From TC Energy in Mexico to Enbridge in Texas, Canadian firms thrive abroad while federal policy stalls growth domestically.

"This is what being an energy superpower looks like."

Thus, Energy Minister Tim Hodgson commented on the Canadian Energy Regulator's (CER) approval of Enbridge's Sunrise Expansion Program.

Well, not really.

Not to deny Mr. Carney's government the satisfaction of a good-news moment, but this project was first mooted in 2019, the application went to the CER in 2024, approval has just been granted, and with a bit of luck, it'll be ready to go in 2028.

And so, after four years from application to completion — along an existing route (!) — it will add 300 million cubic feet a day to Alberta's natural gas export capacity, which typically runs at 11 billion cubic feet/day (BCF).

Yes, we'll celebrate that. But let's keep a sense of proportion here.

Mr. Hodgson is by no means the worst of this Liberal crew now in power, but given his own industry experience, I'm rather surprised he accepted the line from staff.

Because this is not what being an energy superpower looks like, and he knows it.

What being an energy superpower looks like is when the world's oil tankers switch gulfs and load up at Ingleside (near Corpus Christi) instead of Kharg Island.

Could Canada be an energy superpower? Yes. Stephen Harper thought so 20 years ago, and worked tirelessly to make it so. And Canada has the product.

But it also has governments that think there's something dirty about it. That would be BC, holding its nose as it accepts billions in resource revenues, Quebec that won't accept a pipeline carrying 'dirty' Alberta oil, but cheerfully runs on product imported from the US, Trump or no Trump.

And of course, the federal government itself has spent ten years doing all it can to restrict the growth of Alberta's oil and gas industry, and to this day, even as it talks about being an energy superpower, it continues its ban on oil tankers off the West Coast.

It has also created circumstances such that even when official Ottawa seems to be giving the wink to a new northern pipeline to Prince Rupert (tanker ban or not), there's no queue forming at the CER to apply for clearance to build it.

Could it be that Canada's policies towards indigenous peoples have planted the idea that they have the final decision? And that acts as a disincentive?

So yes, good for Enbridge for sticking with it. And yes, the Sunrise project delivers a shovel-ready, fully contracted, multi-billion-dollar project, albeit with 47 conditions addressing the usual environmental, safety, and consultation requirements, and the project uses electric compression to limit its footprint.

And yes, it will generate jobs, taxes, and in a few years make a 2% difference to Canadian export capacity.

All good. Better 2% up than 2% down.

But leaving aside my flippant comments about oil exports from America's Gulf refineries, here's what Canada needs to aspire to, if it wants to say it's an energy superpower. Let me tell you a story.

TC Energy — still smarting, I would suppose, from one of Mr. Trudeau's early 'successes,' the federal puck-ragging that led to cancellation of their Energy East project — applied in 2022 to the Mexican government for permission to build its Southeast Gateway Gas Pipeline.

This is a 36" pipe running about 450 miles, which was completed in less than three years from the time of application and came in under budget. It has four times the capacity of Sunrise — 1.3 BCF — and is supplying power plants in Yucatán. Operations began in May 2025.

Now here's a fact we forget. That Ingleside plant I mentioned?

That's the Enbridge Ingleside Energy Center is actually North America's largest crude oil storage and export terminal.

Read that again; the largest oil export facility in America belongs to a Canadian company. Actually, a Calgary headquartered company.

Enbridge in the Gulf, TC Energy in Mexico ... actually, Canada is an energy superpower.

Just not in Canada. That's policy, and it hasn't changed.

Trump has done more to help Canadians already than Carney ever will.

Trump has used tariffs, tax cuts, and deregulation to attracxt fifteen trillion dollars of new investment. By contrast Carney has created new carbon levies and added to disnicentivizing rules to drive investment South of the border.

Carney's sovereign debt fund is a cyncial attempt to look like their are investments but it's all debt that we will pay for. Investors eschew Canada because of taxes and red tape. Adding a debt fund does not change that.

Canada's unemployment rate rose to a six-month high in April to 6.9 per cent as the economy lost a net 17,700 jobs, Statistics Canada data showed.

South of the border the U.S. labor market continued to defy expectations in April, with employers surpassing economists' forecasts and adding 115,000 jobs nationwide.

Economists predicted payroll gains of 65,000 in April, according to a consensus forecast from FactSet.

Carney broke his promise on TFW's. He has even increased the number because his Brookfield friends asked him to. He does not care that we have lost 120,000 full time jobs so far this year. He does not care that youth unemployment is around fifteen percent.

Meanwhile the States has negative migration under Trump. It is Americans getting most new jobs. Crime rates are at their lowest levels in sixty years.

Everything comes down to immigration. No issue impacts the working class so directly.
