Population growth was essentially flat during those same three months, meaning inflation-adjusted per-person GDP---a broad measure of individual living standards--- declined to $58,855 as of July 2025.

However, Canadian living standards have been stagnant since long before President Trump retook office---indeed, the current standard of living is below the level it was in the middle of 2019 ($59,905) before the pandemic. Moreover, stagnant living standards aren't a universal problem. For perspective, per-person GDP (adjusted for inflation) in the United States grew by 11.0 per cent from mid-2019 to mid-2025.

Simply put, not only do Canadians feel that they are worse off than in recent years, the data shows they actually are. As such, governments across the country must implement policies that promote economic growth.

uncompetitively high taxes make Canada less attractive to top talent while also discouraging productive economic behaviour like work, savings, investment and entrepreneurship. Both of these effects act as a drag on the economy, and as such policymakers are correct to highlight these areas.

Not only do Canadians feel they are worse off than they were in recent years, new data shows that living standards actually are worse off. To help turn things around, governments across the country must pursue policies that promote economic growth.

Maybe Singapore is doing well or better than most countries but much of the world is either slowing down or sliding into a recession Shen Li Shen.

The federal government just released its latest budget. In the budget, the government promises to "strengthen" the industrial carbon tax.

The budget also said the industrial carbon tax will be part of a "multi-decade industrial carbon price trajectory."

That's more political jargon. What it really means is "keep making life more expensive."

That's how the consumer carbon tax worked too. The government made you pay more by hiking the tax every year.

The government will likely say this tax will only cost businesses, but taxpayers like you know any carbon tax on businesses is also a carbon tax that will cost regular Canadians.

Carbon taxes on fuel refineries make gasoline and diesel more expensive, carbon taxes on utilities make home heating and electricity more expensive and carbon taxes on fertilizer plants increase costs for farmers and that makes food cost more.

The latest budget has $54.7 billion for health care transfers to the provinces and $55.7 billion for interest on the massive debt that is accumulating under the Liberals profligate spending.

It's true that Canada had a particularly poor record of economic growth during the decade-long government of former prime minister Justin Trudeau, during which it dramatically hiked immigration levels, particularly in the wake of the 2020 pandemic.

Where Canada was once competitive with the U.S. in terms of economic growth, last year, according to figures from the World Bank, U.S. GDP per capita was $85,809.90, compared to $54,282.60 in Canada in constant U.S. dollars. That's 58% higher in the U.S. compared to Canada.

While a properly managed immigration system contributes to economic growth by filling labour shortages and making up for Canada's low birth rate in terms of providing future workers, an improperly managed one weakens the economy.

Internal government documents obtained by The Canadian Press last year revealed that in announcing significant boosts to Canada's immigration targets in 2022, the Trudeau government ignored warnings from its own public servants that doing so would increase the cost of housing and negatively impact Canada's already beleaguered healthcare system.
