This data confirms what anybody who has ever lived in Canada knows: the country has gotten a lot poorer, consumer and government debt are soaring and Canadians are faring much wore than other developed nations, primarily the United States.
QuoteA recent survey indicates that the majority of Canadians feel worse off now than in 2020. New data from Statistics Canada show these feelings aren't unfounded, and that Canadians indeed suffer a worse standard of living than they had in recent years.
According to the survey, 61 per cent of respondents said they are financially worse off than they were before the pandemic, while 89 per cent find it harder to manage expenses on everyday items such as food and shelter. In other words, most Canadians feel they have a lower standard of living than they did in recent years.
The new numbers from Statistics Canada show that inflation-adjusted (GDP)---the final value of all goods and services produced in the economy---shrank by 0.4 per cent during the second quarter of 2025 (i.e. from the beginning of April to the end of June). Population growth was essentially flat during those same three months, meaning inflation-adjusted per-person GDP---a broad measure of individual living standards--- declined to $58,855 as of July 2025.
However, Canadian living standards have been stagnant since long before President Trump retook office---indeed, the current standard of living is below the level it was in the middle of 2019 ($59,905) before the pandemic. Moreover, stagnant living standards aren't a universal problem. For perspective, per-person GDP (adjusted for inflation) in the United States grew by 11.0 per cent from mid-2019 to mid-2025.
Simply put, not only do Canadians feel that they are worse off than in recent years, the data shows they actually are. As such, governments across the country must implement policies that promote economic growth.
uncompetitively high taxes make Canada less attractive to top talent while also discouraging productive economic behaviour like work, savings, investment and entrepreneurship. Both of these effects act as a drag on the economy, and as such policymakers are correct to highlight these areas.
Not only do Canadians feel they are worse off than they were in recent years, new data shows that living standards actually are worse off. To help turn things around, governments across the country must pursue policies that promote economic growth.

This is what Pierre Polivere said about the data from Statistics Canada.
QuoteWe should be the richest country in the world. But Canada's current standard of living is lower than it was in 2019—while the U.S. saw an 11% increase over the same period.
Liberal taxes, inflation and red-tape drive investment and jobs south while crushing the value Canadians paycheques and taking 42% of what's left.
Mark Carney's handout & bailout economy is making a small group of elite rich by making everyone else poor.

Record highs. $3500 an ounce while the stock market is going sideways. When Gold spikes like that people are scared. Not just the USA but Asia too. Actually Asians are the biggest hoarders of gold and are driving the prices up. I suspect they think something is coming & is around the corner Shen.

The gap between America and Canada will only widen further in the coming years as America pursues growth and Canada's economy fizzles due to deliberate slow growth policies. Canada's performance since 2015 has been dismal. Not just economically either, but mostly so. Canada's GDP per capita was at par or slightly ahead of America when Mr. Harper left office. Now Canada's most talented citizens are leaving their countries droves to find opportunities in America than they cannot get at home.

Conman Carney wants to ban new gas and diesel vehicles by 2035 as part of his electric-vehicle mandate, but taxpayers like you are already pushing back and it's working.
Ottawa was forced to delay the ban by one year because of pressure from thousands of taxfighters.
Now Carney is trying to salvage his policy by launching a consultation designed to justify it.
Meanwhile, environmental lobbyists are flooding the consultations with demands for stricter rules and higher costs for Canadian families.
Canadians cannot afford billions more in subsidies, charging stations, new power plants and transmission lines to power Carney's EV pipedream.
Every dollar spent on this political experiment means less money for the essentials families need. You deserve the freedom to choose the car or truck that fits your lifestyle — not the one politicians pick for you.
From 2000 to 2024, Canada's immigrant population exploded, growing at an average annual rate of 15.1% post-2015, with non-permanent residents like temporary workers and international students now comprising a staggering 7.4% of the population. Asia and the Middle East have overtaken traditional sources, shifting demographics and settlement patterns toward urban centers. While economic immigrants make up 58-67% of permanent arrivals, family reunifications and refugees, often with lower initial earnings, add to the fiscal load.
The Latest budget will only make Canadians worse off.
The federal government just released its latest budget. In the budget, the government promises to "strengthen" the industrial carbon tax.
Taxpayers know what that means: Make life more expensive for Canadians.
The budget also said the industrial carbon tax will be part of a "multi-decade industrial carbon price trajectory."
That's more political jargon. What it really means is "keep making life more expensive."
That's how the consumer carbon tax worked too. The government made you pay more by hiking the tax every year.
The government will likely say this tax will only cost businesses, but taxpayers like you know any carbon tax on businesses is also a carbon tax that will cost regular Canadians.
Carbon taxes on fuel refineries make gasoline and diesel more expensive, carbon taxes on utilities make home heating and electricity more expensive and carbon taxes on fertilizer plants increase costs for farmers and that makes food cost more.
The latest budget has $54.7 billion for health care transfers to the provinces and $55.7 billion for interest on the massive debt that is accumulating under the Liberals profligate spending.

The reason I hate rich globalist dickheads like the entire caucus of the Liberal party is their hatred of working folks.
All Justine and Conman have done for ten years is tell us to lower our expectations.
Mark Carney and the Liberals have made it impossible for Canadians to afford groceries.
And his new costly budget only makes things worse.
All because, from farm to fork, the Liberals have hidden taxes every step of the way, causing your grocery checkout receipts to skyrocket.
While Canadians suffer, Carney's budget ignores the problem entirely. Keeping these heartless taxes that continue to leave families struggling to feed their kids.
This is unacceptable.
Mr. Carney has not lived in Canada for a long time gets to decide what major projects are in the national interest not market demand. And he is financing them with taxes and borrowing.
Something is very wrong with Canada under the Liberals.
All of this is intentional. No real leader who cares about his country and people would do anything like this. Its despicable.

Yes, unsustainable immigration lowered our standard of living
The Liberal government policy of unsustainable immigration levels has had a long-term negative impact on our economy
While it will enrage the usual suspects, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance's assertion Canada's "immigration insanity," rather than his boss' trade war against us, is the reason Canada's "living standards have stagnated," contains an element of truth.
Vance made the claims on X on Friday, in responding to a chart posted by another user that showed Canada's real (inflation-adjusted) GDP per person – a widely accepted metric for determining a nation's standard of living – has plummeted in recent years.
"While I'm sure the causes are complicated, no nation has leaned more into 'diversity is our strength, we don't need a melting pot we have a salad bowl' immigration insanity than Canada. It has the highest foreign-born share of the population in the entire G7 and its living standards have stagnated ...
"And with all due respect to my Canadian friends, whose politics focus obsessively on the United States: your stagnating living standards have nothing to do with Donald Trump or whatever bogeyman the CBC tells you to blame. The fault lies with your leadership, elected by you."
https://x.com/JDVance/status/1991851742426751310?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1991851742426751310%7Ctwgr%5Ef0f357a91298026e8a6a8a6b9d3eba8984f9338e%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftorontosun.com%2Fopinion%2Fcolumnists%2Fgoldstein-yes-unsustainable-immigration-lowered-our-standard-of-living
It's true that Canada had a particularly poor record of economic growth during the decade-long government of former prime minister Justin Trudeau, during which it dramatically hiked immigration levels, particularly in the wake of the 2020 pandemic.
Canada's real GDP per person increased by a mere 1.4% during the Trudeau era, second-worst among the 38 developed nations that belong to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and the worst record of any Canadian government since that of R.B. Bennet during the Great Depression.
Where Canada was once competitive with the U.S. in terms of economic growth, last year, according to figures from the World Bank, U.S. GDP per capita was $85,809.90, compared to $54,282.60 in Canada in constant U.S. dollars. That's 58% higher in the U.S. compared to Canada.
While a properly managed immigration system contributes to economic growth by filling labour shortages and making up for Canada's low birth rate in terms of providing future workers, an improperly managed one weakens the economy.
Internal government documents obtained by The Canadian Press last year revealed that in announcing significant boosts to Canada's immigration targets in 2022, the Trudeau government ignored warnings from its own public servants that doing so would increase the cost of housing and negatively impact Canada's already beleaguered healthcare system.

Jo Jo and I are very concerned about Mr. Carney's inflationary carbon policies that are making the price of groceries soar in Canada.
Grocery inflation reached its highest rate in nearly two years.
Food inflation rose 4.7 per cent on a yearly basis last month compared to 3.4 per cent in October, marking the largest increase since December 2023.
According to Canada's Food Price Report, a Canadian family of four can expect to pay $994 more for groceries in 2026. The report forecasts food prices to increase 4-6 per cent.
