As Trump seeks peace, the United Nations is on the sidelines
His words were called deranged, undiplomatic and worse, but Donald Trump was right: The United Nations is useless at stopping wars.
In Trump's long and rambling speech at the UN on Tuesday, he mentioned war more than two dozen times, spoke of the wars he helped end, and called for the wars between Ukraine and Russia, and Israel and Hamas to stop.
As he spoke about helping end several wars around the world – seven by his count, he hit upon a point few are willing to say out loud: The United Nations has done nothing to stop any of these wars.
"It's too bad that I had to do these things instead of the United Nations doing them. And sadly, in all cases, the United Nations did not even try to help in any of them," Trump said. "I ended seven wars, dealt with the leaders of each and every one of these countries, and never even received a phone call from the United Nations offering to help in finalizing the deal."
Since coming to office, Trump has helped settle conflicts or prevent escalating hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Cambodia and Thailand, India and Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, Israel and Iran, Kosovo and Serbia, and Egypt and Ethiopia. Not all of these were full-scale wars, but some had the potential to escalate into larger conflicts with people dying on both sides.
Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani has been strident in praising Trump for helping settle matters in her region.
At times, Trump has used America's economic might to nip conflicts in the bud. He threatened Cambodia and Thailand with steep tariffs if they escalated their border dispute rather than find a peaceful solution and it appears to have worked.

He is currently trying to use tariffs and economic leverage to put pressure on Russia and countries that trade with Russia such as India and China to try to stop the war with Ukraine.
Whatever you think of Trump, the man is trying to stop senseless wars around the world, and he's doing more than the useless United Nations to bring about peace.
Too many people still have a rose-coloured-glasses view of the United Nations. They see it as a vehicle for peace, a place where world leaders come together, when it is none of that. Perhaps that is what was intended, but that is not reality and Trump stated as much while addressing the UN General Assembly.
"The UN has such tremendous potential. I've always said it. It has such tremendous, tremendous potential, but it's not even coming close to living up to that potential," Trump said.
"For the most part, at least for now, all they seem to do is write a really strongly worded letter and then never follow that letter up. It's empty words and empty words don't solve war. The only thing that solves war and wars is action."
Hillel Neuer, the Canadian lawyer and human rights advocate who heads up UN Watch in Geneva, has called the UN General Assembly the catwalk for dictators. The most autocratic, theocratic and dictatorial countries get the same vote as the freest democracies at the UN, their voices carry the same weight.
It's how at times we've ended up with Saudi Arabia in charge of the committee on women's rights or North Korea being in charge of nuclear disarmament as they seek to build a bomb. Iran, a theocratic regime which beats women, sometimes kills them for not covering up according to their perverted vision, is about to be elected to a spot on the UN human rights council.
Securing peace is supposed to be one of the main reasons for the United Nations to exist, but on that front they fail miserably.
It was Donald Trump working on those seven conflicts, not the UN, and it is Trump who is putting in the hard work to find a solution for both Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Hamas. The UN talks a good game, is filled with sanctimony and condescension, but they don't put in the work.
Donald Trump is doing more for peace than the entire United Nations.

The UN has been useless on climate change, COVID-19 and of course preventing and stopping wars.
Donald Trump has been the best president ever when it comes to global peace.
