Title: Forum page load times
Post by: wizer on November 13, 2025, 02:27:39 AM
I've been monitoring the forum home page load times for the past week or so, here are some sample times.

I just hit a new record for slowness, just under 3 seconds load time which seems like an eternity.

Page created in 2.717 seconds with 31 queries.

Page created in 1.929 seconds with 31 queries.

Page created in 1.161 seconds with 28 queries.

Page created in 0.348 seconds with 28 queries.

Page created in 0.169 seconds with 28 queries.

Those of us who still remember the excitement of replacing our 33k dialup modem with a shiny new 56k modem can't help laughing at that statement.

A couple of seconds isn't what I'd call interminable.

It changes the entire experience, rather than having a fast, snappy feel to it, the lag makes the forum feel sluggish as compared to other web pages. And sometimes it's slower than other times, and worse than the 3 seconds I recorded. I can go to another forum, load a page, then come back here and that circle in the upper left corner of the oversized Shout Box is still spinning.

At times, especially between trips, the next one is in 3 weeks.

I've got a lot of downtime.

It's probably the inferior Greek connectivity infrastructure.  The donkeys can only walk so fast.

Most Greeks use Cosmote internet which is slow and unreliable but cheap. We got Starlink.

Cool!  I see the Starlink chains in the sky sometimes.  Does it work well? And how much?

Starlink is fast and reliable. Sometimes the router goes offline and it needs a reboot or you just gotta wait a few minutes. Setting it up was interesting, you download the app and go up on your roof and aim it at the sky and walk around which can be a bit dizzying as most roofs are sloped and you gotta look at the phone and keep it pointed in certain directions as instructed by the app while trying to keep your balance and not fall off the roof. Starlink is 55 euros per month, at the current exchange rate which is unfavorable to the US dollar it's about $70 per month.
