To be honest, I'm not really into team sports much. I usually go once a year to see the OIlers play, but I'm not a true fan of the NHL.
Shen, I was not either. Ice hockey was so foreign to me before until my son played it.

I have a son, so I guess I might change too. I definitely want him playing sports, that is for sure.

How old is your son, Fash, and what type of sport is he playing?

How old is your son, Fash, and what type of sport is he playing?
He will be ten this year and his favourite sport is baseball..
He also plays soccer and hockey..
My husband plays soccer and hockey too.
My son is too old now for Junior Hockey. Last year was his last season with his Junior Hockey traveling team. Now he plays every other week with his friends or whenever their work schedules permit. They join others at a men's hockey game.
For many years, Fash, I was a proud hockey Mom of a player that scored goals. I also played the music so they called me a DJ Hockey Mom, hehe. His team mates respected me for that because I would play music they like. That was so much fun. I thoroughly enjoyed when he would appear on the local newspaper because he was a leader in goals. As his Mom, that sure made me proud. My heart would swell with pride that it felt like it was coming out of my chest, hehe. Good times.
You and Shen could have talented hockey players some day or athletes of whatever sport they choose.

I would love for my son to have a professional hockey career..
That would be a dream come true for my husband and I as much as our son..
But, it is more important that he have an education to fall back on..
I am not an educated woman, so I know how hard life is without a degree.

It so expensive for us to see a hockey game as a family..
The ticket price, four return C train tickets, a hot dog and fountain drink for my children and popcorn comes to a total of over eight hundred dollars..
There was no chance of us seeing a hockey game this year.

Oh, yes, Shen. In the past, I used to go more but not as of late. I like kicking back on my couch when it's on TV. I like that more actually and then I can just retire after. If I went to the rink, I'd get home so late after. They have games during the day too so that had been fun. I'd go with my sons.

I read that, Shen. I don't seem to have any feeling about it pro or con except I wish there are no more teams to be added but perhaps it's good? I don't know. More exposure to hockey in every city is a good thing, I suppose. Just don't resent the players for making so much money. In fact, hockey players earn the least money in all the pro sports.

Tomorrow is the hundredth anniversary of the Vancouver Millionaires Stanley Cup win!
Few people know that a Vancouver hockey team has won the Stanley Cup (geez, it was only a hundred years ago), but even fewer people know that it changed hockey into what it is today.
Quote
At the dawn of the last century, hockey visionaries Frank and Lester Patrick headed West and gambled everything. Great players in the National Hockey Association, they had become frustrated with the slow, grinding game played in the eastern-based league. They sold the family business, and moved to Vancouver with a new vision for hockey that would change our game forever.
In 1912 they founded a new league on the West Coast, built huge new arenas, and revolutionized our game to showcase speed and creativity. They introduced forward passing, the blue line, line changes, delayed penalties, and the penalty shot. They placed numbers on players' sweaters, introduced the scoring concept of assists and allowed goaltenders to leave their feet to make a save. They created the first playoff system in North American sports, the one we still use today. This was the birth of modern hockey. And it all happened right here.
The 10,500-seat Denman Arena, the world's largest ice rink at the time, played host to the first-ever official playoffs for the Stanley Cup. The Pacific Coast Champion Vancouver Millionaires, led by superstar Fred "Cyclone" Taylor, would face off in a best-of-five series against the NHA champion Ottawa Senators.
There was no parade, no on-ice presentation. The Senators, so confident they would easily dispatch the upstart Millionaires, had not even brought the Stanley Cup with them to Vancouver. After the final game, the exhausted and defeated Senators crowded into the Millionaires dressing room to congratulate them. The new style of hockey had beaten the old.
//http://canucks.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=86493
The Denman Arena was also the first in Canada to have artificially frozen ice. It was lost to fire in 1936.

Hockey is hockey. Fighting in hockey is magnified by people who are anti-hockey because that's all they think hockey is about. Too bad for them.
I can't help but wonder how many potentially great players chose a different career because they didn't want to end up leaving a stain on the glass.

Of course they're tough. They have to be. It's an entrance requirement. I think it's sad that the terms 'goon' and 'enforcer' are so deeply entrenched in the psyche that we don't even recognize them for what they are - bullying.

I'm quite sure there was a lot more fighting in hockey in the past. Plenty of bench-clearing brawls.
I don't think fighting is totally necessary but I understand why it's in hockey. The game is so intense and the players are really battling for that puck. Aggression can really boil over.
Though I do think fighting will likely be banned within maybe ten years. Too many needless injuries and the game is moving more towards skill.
I'm happy for you, Azhya! That's quite the team to beat and it's a big step closer to the playoffs.

I agree with you, R. I enjoy hockey for hockey. I don't watch it for "fights." When people focus on hockey "fights" too much, I immediately realize they are unfamiliar with the game itself. It is also not bullying when hockey players fight. These are grown men who decide to drop the gloves and go for it. That's the "aggression" you mentioned. I get annoyed when they fight because it delays the game and then there could be guys that end up in the penalty box.

Good for Ovie! And Peter Bondra is a class act.
I was lucky enough to be at the game where Henrik Sedin surpassed Markus Naslund as the all-time Canucks leading scorer.
Henrik, Daniel and Naslund are 1-2-3 in all-time Canucks scoring, and they're all from the small town of Örnsköldsvik, Sweden.
Can you believe that?! The twins obviously, but Naslund too? What are the odds?

He and Steven Stamkos are the best goal scorers in the league.
Washington won in a shootout! They'll likely make the playoffs now. Azhya's probably still jumping up and down around her house.
Vancouver lost but it hasn't been a bad road trip so far.

Hey, Ro. I hope Vancouver gets back on track.
Hockey Day in America! Woohoo! ac_drinks
The Caps host the Bruins tonight! Washinton 2, Boston 0, towards the end of the 2nd period. Woohoo!
Cool, I'm hoping Ottawa will surpass Boston for a playoff spot. I'll never forgive the Bruins for 2011!
The Caps are in and the Canucks are in! Calgary will be in if they can beat LA tomorrow.
We'll have a friendly competition when it's all figured out.
Good luck to your team too, R!
ac_drinks !
Cheers!
I'm gettin' pretty excited. I'm already in playoff mode!
Yeah! I hope the Flames beat the Kings! ac_drinks
Jets and Flames made the playoffs. Vancouver and Calgary in the first round.
Will Fash and Romero make a wager here?? ac_popcorn
I'll be setting up a friendly competition! But first, the results of the 2nd annual Blue Cashew(formerly ACC) Battle of the Basement!
Calgary, Vancouver and this year's expansion team Washington have made the playoffs and are therefore disqualified. Shen Li's Edmonton Oilers win! 2nd in a row! Good luck on NHL draft day!
Let's take some time to reflect on the highlights of this year's Battle of the Basement:
(Highlights not available)
Okay! Now it's time for the 1st annual Blue Cashew Playoff Challenge!
Calgary, Vancouver and Washington. If anybody else wants their team in on this, let us know. 1 point for a win. In the event of a tie, the tie breaker will be each team's total goal differential(10 goals for & 5 goals against = +5).
Good luck everyone!
I am a little worried about Fash becoming really competitive. The Flames haven't been in the playoffs for a while. This could get nasty.
"Hey Romero, What's the difference between the Calgary Flames and Vancouver hockey teams?"
"Um, I don't know, Fash. What's the difference?"
"The last Calgary Flames Stanley Cup team picture isn't in black and white. Loser."
"Ouch, Fash. That really hurts."
Go Flames.

Oilers all the way......just kiddin.
Woohoo! All 16 teams have been sealed and the Caps are in the top 8. It's like watching which students are going to get in the honor roll. ac_biggrin
Now the competition begins! Woohoo! The top team ain't necessarily giong to be the champion. I love hockey playoffs. RRRAAARRR!!!
Awesome that you chicks support hockey.
Woohoo!
Alex Ovechkin, the Great 8, gets another Rocket Richard trophy!
"Ovechkin scored 53 goals to capture his third consecutive and fifth overall Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy, adding to the ones he earned in 2007-08, 2008-09, 2012-13 and 2013-14. Ovechkin became the sixth player in NHL history to record six 50-goal seasons, joining Mike Bossy (9), Wayne Gretzky (9), Marcel Dionne (6), Guy Lafleur (6) and Mario Lemieux (6). He also led the League and set a career high/franchise record with 25 power-play goals, while his 11 game-winning goals paced the NHL and matched a personal best. Ovechkin, who finished 2014-15 ahead of Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos (43) and New York Rangers forward Rick Nash (42), scored 41 of his 53 goals in the final 55 games of season (0.75 GPG). He posted his 473rd and 474th career goals on April 2 to surpass Peter Bondra (472) as the leading goal-scorer in Capitals history."
The nice looking gals in the crowd are good.
Good for Ovi, a true hall of fame'r!
So, five Canadian teams are in with four of them playing against each other. That guarantees at least two Canadian teams making it the second round.
The LA Kings are only the fifth team in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup then miss the playoffs.
It's nice to see Winnipeg back. Those fans are going to be pumped up, having not seen any playoff action since 1996.
This is Calgary and Vancouver's first postseason meeting since 2004. The Flames are 4-2 overall. Calgary has gone all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals twice after defeating Vancouver, as also has the Canucks after both of its series wins. Should be good!
The New York Islanders and Washington Capitals haven't met up since 1994, with the Islanders winning five out of six in their series overall. Three of the top six NHL scorers are playing in this one!

Alright, I'm finally not too mad about the game now. My response is as late as a Flames game winning goal!

I am watching the Caps game again. It was so good.
Calgary lost 4-1 to Vancouver and Montreal took a 2-0 series lead against Ottawa.
These playoffs are exciting, Fash and Ro. Last night, Backstrom rips it through Halak although he had 4 Islanders D-men around him and tied the game. Later, Chimera seals it with a goal which put the Islanders behind 4-3 with a win for the Caps. So, it is now 1 win each. I always say...we've got to have H-U-N-G-E-R!!! ac_drinks Woohoo!
Way to go, Caps! I've got Kuznetsov in my office hockey pool. I wanted Ovi and Backstrom but they were gone before I had the chance. Good luck in Brooklyn!

The NHL has fined Calgary coach, Bob Hartley, $ 50,000.00 U.S.D, for the incident late in the third period.
I did not hear about that.
Yes, it appears the NHL believes Hartley sent out tough guys late to stir up trouble.
Calgary won 4-2 for a 2-1 series lead..
Montreal also won for a 3-0 series lead.
The Jets lost last night. Nobody expected them to advance, but at least one win at home would be awesome.
I hope Calgary can widen their lead over Vancouver tonight.

Winnipeg and Ottawa could be eliminated tonight.
My lucky t-shirt didn't work. I don't understand why. I didn't even wash it!
Yesterday an announcer mentioned that Winnipeg was only trailing for about a total of 20 minutes in the whole series. That's incredibly close for a team down by three!
So long, Jets.
Go Caps Go!!!
Total domination, yeah!
The Caps are in charge! Kuznetsov got me three points in my hockey pool.
As soon as I turned on the tv Nashville scored two goals. It's all my fault. Sorry Chicago. =(

I am not wicked or ugly or malicious or monstrous or stupid. Look at you first. I said I was sorry to offend you. You are a dirty birdy like many dirty people on this forum. Every year I usually received tickets a few times to games from contractors. I only got one pair this year and I gave it to someone who had never seen a live game. I really don't care who wins, but if the Oil was in the playoffs I'd prolly get into it like I did back in 2006.
Washington is 3-9 in Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, including 2-7 at home. Since 2008, they are 1-4 on home ice.

The Flames made it to the next round even though no one expected them to. I've got to hand it to them! Woohoo! Go Flames!
The Caps are "outworking" the Rangers in this game. It's only Game 1 so 6 more to go.
I see Alexander the great did a nice score.
Just like the Pope, the Great 8 is not infallible and is not superhuman. He is, however, skilled with the stick and the puck on the ice. I love watching him play just like I used to love watching my son play.
Here are five reasons the Capitals advanced:
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=765548
1. Braden Holtby -- Holtby played 73 games and had 41 wins during the regular season. In the playoffs, he's been as consistent with a 1.63 goals-against average and .943 save percentage in six games. All but two games against the Islanders were decided by more than two goals. Washington won three of the four games that were decided by one goal, a testament to the reliable goaltending at each end of the rink.
"To me it's very important, knowing that you've got a guy back there who's been doing what he's done over the whole year," Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. "If you look at some of the great influences of the guys who have played 70-plus games, they've gone pretty far in the playoffs. They're used to being the guy and not always having a big game. They know that they've got to do it night in and night out. I think that's where having him play so many games is really going to help us."
2. Evgeny Kuznetsov -- Kuznetsov has three goals and four points in seven playoff games, including the game-winner in Game 7. His two goals in Game 5 propelled Washington to a 5-1 victory and a 3-2 series lead. He was the second player in Capitals history to score his first three playoff points in the same game since Sergei Gonchar on May 6, 1995. Kuznetsov transitioned from wing to center in his first full NHL season.
"[Kuznetsov] is growing," Trotz said. "He's gotten used to the League. The first 40 games it was little bit of a mishmash of up, down, and not knowing the League quite as well, maybe not as comfortable in his role. Then you sort of get through there, and there's always a glass ceiling for young players. I think he got through that and you're seeing what he's capable of, and he's a terrific player."
3. Islanders depleted defense -- The absence of defensemen Travis Hamonic for the duration of the series, and the loss of Lubomir Visnovsky and Calvin de Haan for part of the series, forced the Islanders to rely on young, untested defensemen Matt Donovan and Scott Mayfield. No Islanders defensemen scored a goal during the series and New York's stifling forecheck was neutralized by Washington. Sheltering the green defensemen meant even bigger minutes for the Islanders' top pairing of Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk. By the end of the series, Boychuk and Leddy were spent.
"We really felt like we were getting to them," forward Tom Wilson said after Game 2. "We were getting them on the forecheck, we were hitting their D, we were making their lives difficult, and that's what it takes in the playoffs. We didn't score right away, we weren't up right away, we just had to keep pounding the rock and staying on them, and it pays off in the long run."
4. Penalty kill -- Washington's penalty kill was perfect facing 14 Islanders power-play chances and is the only playoff team with a 100 percent penalty-kill rate. New York was held without a shot on its power plays in Games 6 and 7. Holtby was indisputably Washington's best penalty killer, making 21 saves while shorthanded.
"You just do the best you can to get in a shot lane," forward Jay Beagle said. "We've got a great coach who goes through our [penalty kill] in depth a lot with us. Everyone knows their job. Lane [Lambert] does a great job of breaking down their [power play] and helping everyone know what to expect, knowing what their habits are. It is everything from winning a draw, which is crucial in the D-zone, to sticking to what we've worked on all year."
5. Secondary scoring -- Forward Alex Ovechkin was held to two even-strength goals, so the Capitals found other ways to score. Defenseman Karl Alzner scored two goals, a career postseason high, and Kuznetsov scored three. Each of Washington's forward lines contributed at least one goal during the series.
"That's playoff time," Trotz said. "You're going to get a goal from someone who hasn't scored a goal all year. It's going to be Karl Alzner or Brooks Orpik or Tim Gleason when you least expect it. That's the beauty of playoffs, is that every night, there might be a new hero, there might be a new set of circumstances that change."

Of the remaining teams, who do you want to win?
I like the Blackhawks to win first but I'll be glad also if the Ducks win. The Ducks's coach is our former Caps coach, Bruce Boudreau. I don't have a strong feeling for the Tampa Bay Lightning except I find it ironic that Martin St. Louis formerly of the Tampa Bay Lightning was traded to the New York Rangers and now his new team could be the next champ. He led the Lighting to a Stanley Cup championship in 2004. Now, he could be in another winning team. He should not have left Calgary.

I don't have your knowledge of hockey Azhya..
But, of the remaining teams, I would like Chicago to win.
After a scoreless two periods, Tampa Bay scores! The Rangers trail the Lightning 1-0 in the third period with only 10 minutes remaining.
Good night, Lundqvist! Good night, Madison Square Garden! Good night, New York!
The look on Lundqvist at the end was heartbreaking. It's so tough. Seems so unfair that such a great player doesn't have a Stanley Cup practically given to him out of sheer awesomeness. The Rangers just couldn't get anything by Bishop. The Lightning goalie is intent on starting his own era.
Tampa Bay has been impressive. A real all-round game. Whoever wins tomorrow, it'll be an exciting finals!
There will never be another Madison Square Garden. The Canucks played a Stanley Cup game 7 there. Thanks for the memories, MSG!
