It is supposed to.
Her work is life sized, and highly detailed.
But at no stage is there a demonstration of fear, revulsion, horror, terror or the slightest concern for the mutations she places in her pieces with humans of all shapes and sizes. Indeed, any ugliness is usually within the viewer.

It definitely symbolizes that millions of people can have very diverse ideas of what art is to them and the same number of people can come up with such varying creations. It also makes me marvel at the civilization that takes pride in its architectural prowess. Why such massive hallways and interiors? Just to showcase masonry, architecture, design, art work and sculptures? In the meantime, during the time this scene was viewed by the artist, native dwellers of other continents oceans away lived in such dwelling places as a wigwam which is constructed from trees and bark. Such night and day contrast.
