Can you think of successes and failures?
Arnel Pineda replacing Steve Perry was a success..
JD Fortune as a replacement for Michael Hutchence, not as much..
Same with Larry Gowan in Styx..
Are there any others you can think of?
Michael McDonald replaced Tom Johnston in the Doobie Brothers.
Nightwish.
Fail.
Ian Gillan replaces Rod Evans; Deep Purple win!!
Brian Johnson replaces Bon Scott;AC/DC win!!!
Jeff Lynne replaces Roy Wood; ELO win!!!
Axl Rose left GNR and was replaced by Scott Weiland..
The band was called Velvet Revolver..
I liked their sound.
Genesis - Phil Collins steps in and replaces Peter Gabriel - Success
Genesis - Ray Wilson replaces Phil Collins - Epic fail.
Van Halen - Sammy Hagar replaces David Lee Roth - Success
Van Halen - Gary Cherone replaces Sammy Hagar - Epic fail
Pink Floyd - David Gilmore replaces Syd Barrett - Success
In many cases the word "success" is relative and debatable. Commercial vs critical success is always a balancing act.

That is true Renee..
For example, my husband does not like Van Halen with Sammy Hagar.
Oasis changing lead singers Liam and Noel Gallagher seemed to make no difference.
When a group changes their lead singer they are no longer the same band. They are a tribute band.
Yeah...
Tarja Turunen had the heavy metal opera voice.. That was nightwish`s thing.

They are not well known here I think.
They are pretty well known amongst heavy metal fans.
IMHO, the most successful transition of all time. Black Sabbath- Dio replaces Ozzy. ac_drinks

Like Fash's husband, mine would disagree that Van Hagar was a success. I like Van Halen with Hagar.

I agree 100% with your husband. I personally can't stand "Van Hagar". It stems from the fact that I just don't like Sammy Hagar. But nonetheless, the Van Halen line up with Hagar was a commercial success. The critical aspect is another story as Van Halen purists are and always have been vehemently against anything Van Halen without David Lee Roth as the front man.
We can argue about who was the better VF frontman, but there is NO debate that Black Sabbath was a superior band with Dio.

Are you kidding???
Ozzy was the heart and soul. When he left, they became just another metal band, like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake and a dozen other poncing pretenders.
Ronnie could sing...but he could never incite the reponse Ozzy did.
^Bullshit, Ozzy would have been a footnote in rock history if not for the smart marketing of Sharon. Ozzy's vocal range was thin. Dio on the other hand was a powerful vocalist.
Powerful vocalists do not a rock band make. Mick Jagger, Bryan Ferry, Ozzy, Jeff Lynne...not powerful vocalists...but had a characteristic that made them unique.
Unlike those screeching morons with powerful vocals but no charisma, style or character. Anyway, wtf do Chinese know about rock music??

Dio has had a huge impact on rock music especially in Scandinavian countries.
BTW, check out Cui Jian. ac_razz
Scandanavian countries have no clue.

One would think you listen to RnB, rap, reggae..
Nordiclands produce the best heavy metal bands.
The environment makes us a bit grim.
