It's actually not a dress but four separate articles of clothing. A bodice, a chemise, and two skirts. You tuck the upper skirt so that you can show off the base skirt. You can do it to varying degrees depending on how much contrasting color and fabric you want to show. An outfit like that isn't complete unless it's accentuated with belts, bracers, fox tails, pouches and always a nasty looking dagger (peace tied) tucked away somewhere.
You're right, the socks do look Scottish. It doesn't suprise me because Scottish personas are very popular at Renn. Faires.

Those socks are great too. You can buy bands that just go around your calves and stick out of the top of your boots so you don't have to wear full socks.

The garb worn at most Renn Faires isn't always accurate to the time period. For the most part the outfits are stylized representations of Renaissance era clothing. It's mainly for fun, almost like an informal fashion show with the serious players each trying to out do the other. Some of the more hard core actors and patrons spend a small fortune outfitting themselves with the proper clothing and accessories. I don't even want to think about the amount of money I spent on garb when I was working faires. One season I spent $600 alone (after discount) on a custom pair of 9 button boots, which were never really seen under my kirtle but they were damn pretty.

That's right. Purple is the color of royalty. Back when I worked faires I wouldn't have been able to wear that outfit in those colors as my character wasn't a proper part of the royal court. The colors I was allowed to wear were colors more suited to commoners Such as white muslin, shades of green, blue, brown, yellow, red and orange. Black could only be worn in accessories such as belts, boots, bracers or one article of clothing. Belive it or not, back during the medieval and renaissance periods black dye was very expensive.
At one time you could usually tell a "playtron" (a dressed faire patron) from a cast member by the colors they wore. As cast members you had strict guidelines as to the colors and clothing you could wear according to your social class.

My old favorite was and still is a cowgirl dress I had / have ....... it is light blue denimish, laces to the navel and is a bit flared and quite short. A big hat and high cowgirl boots to go with it. Mate says it reminds him of Miss Kitty of Gunsmoke era.
After the move, some pics are temporarily in storage, to be sorted in time. When I find some of it I will scan and post ... with part of face blurred
Used it for travel on the prairie and BC and for bar nights .. when I put it on mate knew what body area my head had moved to and that a lot of good things were going to happen throughout the day or evening
I have another fun one for fun evenings ... mate calls it my "wench dress" ... floor length and lots of cleavage and very old English style .. laced very low in front . stereotype English wench design from the days of old
Another is Chinese style ...... covered to and up the neck .... touches the floor .... silk and slit along the side of one leg to the waist

Also most of the clothing itself is stored elsewhere and I know some of it has gone missing over time. My oldest daughter raided into my collection of stuff more than a few times. At least some of it is getting some use.

The guys outfits are just as cool as the women's.
Cool doublet but he's got the kind of face I want to punch.
Simple, tastefully executed guys costume with a lot of subtle detail.
Love the colors.
Costume is by an outfit called Moresca. I bought a lot of their stuff. Good quality off the rack garb. They do custom work as well.
Guaranteed to be sweating like a pig under all that heavy velvet.
Very classy. I'm not big on court garb but that is really well executed.
A little violence is all part of it.

Very sexy bad boy look.
Fairies and Fauns have become a big deal at Ren Faires
Incredible paint job.
