I go to great lengths to show you the wonders of Cambodia, and all you see are dicks.
*sigh*...I bet the Van people wouldn't be so crude.

Fuck. Renee got one right.
BTW, Cambodian drivers aren't too bad. This, I think, is because there are no road rules to speak of. So they drive the way people walk...and it seems to work.

You actually make a good point. I was saddened by the contrast between the tourists and the local population in terms of affluence.
The sense of exploitation is potent. Worse, you assuage your feeling of guilt by paternalising.
Its a tough paradox. Our dollars create jobs, and brings in a massive income that filters through to local business and creates employment. If we stayed away, there would be more poverty.
Its gut wrenching to walk through a gauntlet of hawkers, stall vendors, beggars and "tour guides - very cheap for you sir" to visit their amazing relics.
You are advised not to give children money, for fear of being inundated. At one locale, I counted 5 children selling tourist trinkets at $1, in a small and secluded courtyard. No risk of troops charging over the hill. I had $5, so I bought from one...knowing that the others would home in like Javelin missiles. They did, and I bought from each...but miscounted. There were 6.
I'd run out of money...and this little 8 year old girl walked away crying her eyes out. A nearby Canadian helpfully pointed it out to me, as if I hadn't noticed. "You upset that little girl". Gee fucking thanks. "How about YOU go buy something from her then?"
She was from Quebec City. Says it all really. She walked away.
Whilst I didn;t have a great deal of impact, at least I did more than the PRC's. They give NOTHING away.
