Title: Summer Plans?
Post by: RW on July 08, 2015, 12:43:11 AM
What's everyone up to this summer?

Fash, you made it to Nelson before it got charred.  Good timing.

I'm trying to plan a small trip with my kids, maybe head to Alberta for a bit and check out the flatlands.  Not sure what we'll do there yet.

Camping next long weekend at the end of the month..

We'll probably go to Waterton Lakes National Park.

I visited Flint once.  I wasn't a fan.

Is it true you live in Chicago?

No no. I was born and raised in MI, then lived like a gypsy for slightly over a decade before settling back down in MI.  Flint isnt a good place to visit lol.  I'm thinking lake huron. There is an awesome beach up there I'd like to roll around on :D

Flint really isn't especially for a small town Canadian girl.

I did visit Chicago and I absolutely loved it!  I can't wait to visit again.

It isn't a great town but when a kid, my family was friends with the guy who was in charge of Firebird Jet Turbine development at the Pontiac plant there.

He was very close to my parents, so I got to ride around the test track in Firebird 2.

There were 3 over the years, first was hot jet out the back and 2 &3 were street-legal turbines driving the wheels. GM kept them on show there for a long time.

Our friend actually drove if to Atlanta and laughed at people's reactions all the way there and back

Now, all that remains there is a truck plant - No more summer vacation thrills there now

I like limos best   :icon_wink:

Very, very cool.

I miss Pontiac. Back in the day......uhm when I was a kid.....if you were a common working stiff and you wanted a car that was hot and turned heads; you bought a Pontiac. IMHO, at one time they produced some of the nicest looking cars in the GM stable. Back in the 60s and early 70s before GM went "one sizes fits all".....let's share parts across the line, the plain Jane Chevy's and the stodgy looking Buick's were no match in the cosmetic department.

Here's 3 of my faves:

67 GTO

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7137/7457680134_e6d0473fc5_b.jpg%22%3E%3CLINK_TEXT%20text=%22https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7137/7457%20...%203fc5_b.jpg%22%3Ehttps://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7137/7457680134_e6d0473fc5_b.jpg%3C/LINK_TEXT%3E%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

62 Grand Prix - First production year. A few unique body style elements which were never duplicated on later years.

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22http://www.curbsideclassic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Pontiac-Grand_Prix-1962.jpg%22%3E%3CLINK_TEXT%20text=%22http://www.curbsideclassic.com/wp-conte%20...%20x-1962.jpg%22%3Ehttp://www.curbsideclassic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Pontiac-Grand_Prix-1962.jpg%3C/LINK_TEXT%3E%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

69 GTO for sentimental reasons.....I had one as a first car in 1977. Mine was dark green and in nice shape. It turned a lot of heads in the HS parking lot.

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22http://www.motortopia.com/files/cars/album_updatestothe69gto/5036c76e5802d/GTO_angle_with_moldingsJPG_Thumbnail1.jpg%22%3E%3CLINK_TEXT%20text=%22http://www.motortopia.com/files/cars/al%20...%20bnail1.jpg%22%3Ehttp://www.motortopia.com/files/cars/album_updatestothe69gto/5036c76e5802d/GTO_angle_with_moldingsJPG_Thumbnail1.jpg%3C/LINK_TEXT%3E%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

Unfortunately by the late 60s you could tell were GM was going with their car production......shared parts,....same car across the line,.... just different badges. The other unfortunate thing was if you did buy a Pontiac in the 60s, you ran a higher than average risk of getting one with a shitty trans or some other nasty mechanical problem. Pontiac always seemed like GM's experimental division and all the new untried stuff seemed to get thrown into Pontiac vehicles. :laugh3:

That 69 GTO is very nice.

I miss the days where every car didn't look the same.

Dove, I've been through many parts of Michigan--Detroit, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, Kalamazoo, Saugatuck, Holland, etc. If you haven't been to Upper Peninsula, Mackinac Island, do go. The way up there is pretty. Stop by Traverse City, so lovely there, by the water. At night on the road, it will be dark, no highway lights, so watch out for wild animals crossing. I remember the look on my children's faces and how big their eyes were on the road just in case the car's headlights caught a big wild animal on the road. Heheh.

Near Benton Harbor in Benton Charter Township, Whirlpool Corporation built its headquarters. You probably know more.

I stayed with a cousin in Michigan when I was a teen for a month during summer. Had a blast. Drove dune buggies, went to some big concerts, and partied a lot.

We were going to go with my brother and his family to Clinton early next month but now it's cancelled. My sister in law is having unknown medical problems with pain so her travelling would not be good    ac_crying
