Title: Has anyone toured the southern united states and visited a plantation?

Hello miss Dove of NOLA :)  Did you ever visit a plantation?  Miss travelling RW?  Miss Azhya - the proud american traveller?



I'm slowly rereading a book on slavery and life in a southern family of slave owners "Slaves in the Family" by Edward Ball.  It talks about the early days of Charleston, the history of american slavery, the civil war as it affected the author's family and slaves.   Has anyone visited a plantation?  What did you think?  The ballroom in the video below is gorgeous - everything is painted white (shows up around 6 minutes in).

I haven't myself, but it would be worth being part of the itinerary if I do go.

I have never toured one but I've seen them. I don't live in NOLA, currently. I'm in MI, where I was born and raised.  But I am a gypsy soul so I've lived in NOLA, MS, AL, NY, and FL. And ive traveled lol.

But of course, asal. The very first plantation shown in that video is a place I've been to. It is called Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana, just outside of New Orleans. Oh, you must take the time to travel the good ole USA. If you can take 4-weeks off, that's how long it took for me to see so much in one summer. However, I've done so many road trips in my 33 years in the USA. There are only 12 states I haven't seen yet.



The 12 states I have yet to see:



Massachusetts

New Hampshire

Vermont

Maine

Alabama

Georgia

Oregon

Kentucky

Arkansas

Hawaii

Alaska

Would visiting a Southern plantation evoke the same emotions among African-Americans as bisiting yasukuni shrine would among Asians?

Oak Alley Plantation, Vacherie, Louisiana. It is a one hour drive from New Orleans. It faces the banks of the Mississippi River. It is said to be haunted, yet it is used for weddings. A historic southern gem.

I haven't been anywhere in the states except down the I-5 (through all the pacific states).  I went to San Francisco last October and had an awesome trip.  Everyone in BC goes to Washington state :) *edit - I forgot I drove to Idaho once.  Very pretty state.

This is an aerial view of Oak Alley. The row of oak trees lead you to the bank of the Mississippi river and the steam boats are a common sight on the mighty river.

Deep in the south and hidden away from much exposure is the charming and beautiful Natchez, Mississippi. There you will find beautiful antebellum homes preserved to this day and open to the public for the enjoyment of curious sightseers and tourists.

There is much beauty in the south but there is also much dread if you think about its history. If you can separate yourself from the history, there is much to love about the south.
