Title: Accents
Post by: RW on July 19, 2015, 06:38:16 PM
I know some of you were born in other places and some of you have moved away from your birth countries, but have you kept your accents from your birth place or have you adopted your new country's accent?  Do you find you've mixed your accents?  Can people tell you are from another place?

While born in Oz, I came over young and thankfully I lost any trace of that horrible sound.

Now I have only a boring S Ontario sound. No one would guess where I was born.

I can fake a pretty good Tennessee accent though ... I guess because I visited there a lot and loved the way they spoke. I think it was the courtesy they show to others  that turned me on to it. Even a short phone call to people I know there finds me talking Tennessee for hours after . without trying to

People I speak to face to face say I no longer have an accent but folks on the phone say I do. Go figure. This Canadian-born Pinoy (Filipino) has a funny video on Filipino accents. He really speaks without an accent but he is exaggerating here.  :laugh3:

Although I was actually born in Canada, I went back to Taiwan shortly after..

English is my third language after Taiwanese and Mandarin..

When we came to Canada as a family I had to learn English..

Most people say I do not have an accent, but a few people say they hear the odd word that gives away I am an immigrant..

I am very comfortable with English though.

I have an odd combination of easthe coast and southern slang....I've lived in a lot of states. Considering my flame board history, people who have spoken to me from the net usually comment on how soft spoken I am and how it clashes with my 'board impression' lol

Isn't it strange that my screen name has always been "Dove"....but I was soooo ruthless?  And I got washed in the blood.  I'm actually pretty delicate and sensitive.

I think a lot of times online, our "tone" gets misinterpreted and we come off as forceful pricks. It's hard to express ourselves properly in heated discussions without seeming aggresive....I'm a passionate person, so I run into this issue often lol

I can imitate an East Indian accent so well, that if I was on the phone with someone they would not know I was not an EI. Jamaican accents are tougher to master.

There are many different accents in Newfoundland.
