Title: The U.S. is not my favourite place.
Post by: RW on August 22, 2015, 03:53:59 PM
(Shut up Romero!)

Dear America,

I'm writing to inform you of my feelings towards you.  Although you are not my favourite country in the world, I still visit on occasion and can have a relatively good time within your borders.  The truth is, you scare me.  I'm scared of your size, your people carrying guns, your love of capitalism, your lack of social programming, your healthcare system, your laws and punishments, your media, your police, your foreign policies and interactions.  I'm even scared of your border guards.

Now before you go getting all upset at me, you are the one who has made me scared.  You have come into my country via your big box stores and media outlets.  You've asked my countrymen to join your war crusades and some of them never came home.  You've taken my money and put it in your pockets while my people closed their shops.  Your crime and misdeeds are on my tv every night.

I don't hate you America, I hate that I'm afraid of you.

And no Azhya, I'm not jealous of the U.S.  I don't feel one single ounce of envy towards your country.

I do like a lot of Americans though.  I like you board folks.  I like the three beautiful kids who call me Aunty.  I love my best friend who is now an American as well.

I like quiet Americans who don't worship flags or play with themselves when they hear their national anthem.

Oh 'Real...just fer once, git this thru yer cottonpickin' head.

The USA is not a nation, it's an Empire. Even one of its citzens, Martin Sheen readily admitted it.

In fact it is the largest in the history of the world.

A regular nation doesn't house the IMF, the Fed or have the ability to invade and destroy any nation it chooses to.

Empires are not necessarily nice entities.

They step on others, including their own citizens. regularly.

So rememebah...next time you enter what is known as the USA, you are setting foot on an Empire, not a nation, 'kay?

Well, as everyone knows, I am enthusiastically pro-USA!!

Ewe Ess Ay!!! Ewe Ess Ay!!!

Sadly, its never, ever lived up to its own hype. It claims to embody the finest form of government on the planet.

It doesn't.

It claims to be a global superpower.

It isn't.

It claims to be the greatest country on earth.

It never was.

It is a gilded, painted whore, loved for its wealth and greed above all else. The world feeds from this fatted sow, and millions flock to its shores to indulge in the frenzy for a dollar. It is demonstrated that much of the world's ills can be attributed to capitalism. Whilst communism was never the answer, there is a better way.

But that would require applying the principles the US espouses, but fails to fulfil. Humility. Compassion. Peace. Justice. Fairness.

Instead, it boasts, ignores the wretched, wages war for no reason, employs corruption, and cares for no-one but itself.

Actually, one thing I don't like about the United States is that it is the Biggest Jailer in the world.

It throws more people in prison than any other nation.

There are over 2 million people in US prisons and jails.

America houses 25% of the world's female prison population.

It has more women in prison than China, India and Russia combined.

Many large US corporations use prison labor and pay inmates a fraction of what a civilian would get.

This is a very widescale practice and puts downwards pressure on the wages of the non-prison population.

I guess this is what Empires do, though. Historically the Roman Empire had a lot of slaves and prisoners. The Romans used to brand the letter F on the foreheads of their convicts. Everyone guilty, no crime gone unpunished. The sure sign of an Empire - America you are It. Step on your own people.

Oh, that makes all the difference...even though it was built in China!!!

That's another things Americans like to portray; that they invented and designed just about every innovation the world has known.

TV and radio? Nope.

Computer? Nope.

Flying machines? Nope.

Cars? Nope.

Trains? Nope.

Nuclear energy? Nope.

But, they did perfect the methodology of turning all humankinds innovations, ideals, desires and resources into a profit making exercise. Even religion.

In that, they are beyond challenge.

Even then, they didn't invent it.

America's major problem is that it is hung up on historical self perceptions of what it once was instead of what it has become. It believes its own lies and reinterpretations of history mass fed through fervent nationalism, faux morality, pious religiosity and delivered via early grade school indoctrination, national service, and media brainwashing.

This is not only America's problem. The entire world consists of similar nationalistic and narcissistic ethos variants.

The difference is that America currently and marginally retains the title of world's only superpower, and that's what makes its behavior more dangerous (to itself and to the rest of the world).

For the most part, the observations of Alexis de Tocqueville no longer apply to modern America.

To quote a historical fiction movie line: "Magua's heart is twisted. He would make himself into what twisted him." sums modern America, and that's a real shame.

Nothing can be built without the concept and design first that came from the brilliance of the source. Just like in the biblical story of Noah, he did not build the ark because he was a genius. It came from the concept and design of God who instructed him to build it. He was simply the tool as the builder. The giants conceive it, the worker bees build it.

In the case of the computer, the father of the PC is an Englishman named Charles Babbage.

Then you agree America is simply the builder.

How about you address the specific criticisms levelled at America rather than play the schoolyard ploy of turning your nose up and saying "Don't care what you think"?

Instead of regurgitating American rhetoric and dogma, why not THINK for yourself.  Prove people like me wrong!!!

Or are you afraid that you can't, and that you will have to confront the fact that America isn't quite the Utopia you're believing in?

Well against my better judgement, I'm going to step in and take issue with Spectre's assertion that the TV wasn't a US invention. The fact is Philo Farnsworth, a US citizen, born in Utah, was responsible for pioneering the first ALL ELECTRIC TV that could receive a live image. It is the basis for all the TV's and monitors we use today. A lot of inventors before him, going all they way back into the 19th century, invented machines similar to the TV but they were either fully mechanical or electro-mechanical and they weren't what we would consider a real TV. They were basically static image generators and nothing more. Farnsworth also started the first company to commercially offer TVs to the general public but production was limited because of legal battles with RCA. Eventually "Farnsworth Radio and Television" was purchased by ITT in 1951.

Here is some links to some timelines showing inventions pioneered in the US.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_United_States_inventions

I know it is wiki article but it is backed by credible external references.

There is stuff listed there that you never even give a second thought to but we use everyday. Now I'm not saying that the US has cornered the market on inventing shit because we we haven't. But it's hard not to see and admit that we have had more than our share of success at it.

BTW, I don't know if we can take credit for the image below but it certainly looks American enough. Too bad they only come in children's sizes; it would make a great birthday gift for someone here.

Well, I do not wish to imply that you are incorrect, but Wiki has this to say;

"By the 1920s, when amplification made television practical, Scottish inventor John Logie Baird employed the Nipkow disk in his prototype video systems. On 25 March 1925, Baird gave the first public demonstration of televised silhouette images in motion, at Selfridge's Department Store in London.[16] Since human faces had inadequate contrast to show up on his primitive system, he televised a ventriloquist's dummy named "Stooky Bill" talking and moving, whose painted face had higher contrast. By 26 January 1926 he demonstrated the transmission of the image of a face in motion by radio. This is widely regarded as the first television demonstration."

I have never doubted that American engineers, inventors and entrepreneurs have taken established technologies and advanced them further. The computer is a classic example. Perhaps this is because America exists on the premise that developing a commodity that everyone wants, so that the developer can be rich is the core of its economy.

Nothing wrong with that...unless, of course the commodity is not in everyone's best interest.

Point taken but I think you missed where I wrote the words "All electric TV". Baird's invention was a mechanical TV.

Let's keep the discussion to practical and viable inventions. Let me put it this way; when was the last time you owned or even heard of a mechanical TV?  :icon_wink: I will hazard a guess that you probably haven't but then again a individual of your maturity might actually have one along with a gramophone and a gas lamp.   Sorry couldn't resist.

To put it in perspective, the bicycle and the motorcycle perform the same function but their mode of operation makes them two different machines and credit is given for their designed and creation to two different people. See how that works?

BTW, the motorcycle is an American invention as well but it's not credited as such.  Sylvester Howard Roper, a New Hampshire native, designed and built a coal fired, steam driven bicycle in 1867 which was actually the first motorcycle but the gas engine version which is credited as being the first, was not invented until 1885 by Gottlieb Daimler. So you see, taking credit for inventions when they weren't actually the first of their concept is not just an American thing. It's obvious that your classically Australian, rabid ant-Americanism clouds most of what you express on any subject regarding the US; warranted or not. Unfortunately and sadly your credibility suffers for it. This is not meant to be a slur against you in any way, it's just a heads up on what many here see as a rather pronounced failing of yours.  ac_dunno

I was quite soft, gentle, tender, shy, and self-conscious before. As the years progressed, I evolved. When you put someone soft, gentle, and tender, in an environment for years where they had to learn to toughen up, that soft exterior will one day harden to adjust to its surroundings. Add to the mix some tough real life lessons and that will indeed harden a person, a defense mechanism. That is normal. Everyone does it. Still, the soft inner self is there but it is guarded now. On rare occasions, the guard may be down.

Quote from: "RW"He's the Noah of personal computing.

Finally, you said Babbage is the Noah of personal computing. Are you sure? (No need to respond.) I was saying that Noah was the tool but the ark was God's idea and concept. I never said the Americans invented computers. My message was that the Americans of Apple and Microsoft further developed the computers, improved it to what we use today and I stand by that statement always. My argument was to Spectre's American-bashing and I was merely pointing out that while he was bashing Americans, he was doing so on a computer that Americans developed and improved. That was the irony I was trying to convey. Last but not least, if you say you were not ganging up then please don't respond further to this because this topic is now closed to me and I would not like to add further to it. Remember, I am an older woman and I am already exhausted by this argument. Thanks and have a good day.

Babbage is considered the "Father" of the personal computer.  I don't know what there is to argue about.  Next time, go with the Internet.  That's an American invention.

You don't remember me that way because that was at the very beginning when I was brand new. Just because you don't remember me that way does not mean what I claim to have been like is untrue.

They are not here to support my claim but posters like Bluey, Glasgo, Schmoozer, Watcher, Salty, etc. could attest to my claim but they are from a bygone era now. cc might remember but she and I did not interact much until later also. I considered them my forum pals and I never clashed with them. They never tried to refute anything I said. I enjoyed the forums then when we interacted. I recall that I met you much later, when I was already in memebee. By then, I had already acquired a band of haters who I had begun to clash with so I was no longer as gentle as I was when I was new.
