For me, I finally joined after showing no interest in it for years. I joined because family and friends persisted for they were all there but not I. They said we'd connect and share photos, thoughts, plans and ideas. My friends, Mom, and relatives were happy to connect with me there. I suppose I was happy too, for a while. My Mom would share my posts to her friends so they can post accolades to her for what ever "clever" posts she thinks her "daughter" posted.
I liked it at first but eventually got tired of the phonies, the liars, the self righteous, and the narcissists. I finally asked myself, "What am I doing wasting my time reading these irrelevant rubbish!?" I got tired of the daily selfies of the superficial horde and reading posts by the sophomoric troop displaying their imagined brilliance. As you can tell, the novelty had worn off. I tolerated all that for a while but I can no longer. It was not enhancing my life. Now and then I did find some inspiring stories but you find that everyday away from facebook. So, I deactivated my facebook account and have been happy not going there anymore. What a relief. What sweet freedom not to possess the desire to log in and waste my precious time. I email family and friends to stay in touch. To be plugged in more in my real life is bringing me more joy than spending time in that world of trivial noise. One side of my brain says I can say the same about spending time in forums and perhaps that explains why I am not on a forum day in and day out and all hours. Thank you, come again. ac_biggrin

There is a difference between being a movement of fringe zealots and being a legitimate church. At least there is in civil and modern society.

Okay you just proved my point. If God is not the ONLY, I repeat, ONLY authority....it is NOT of God therefor is not following Christ. Funny you forget verse 5 of that scripture that says she who judges is in fact a hypocrite herself.
In the Bible, Jesus rebukes a fever, demons, the elements (wind, etc), Simon Peter, James and John (for wanting to rain hellfire on the Samaritans), and his Disciples. No where have I seen it written where Jesus commands that Christains should go around rebuking others.
You mentioned the Pharisees. There is a perfect example on how Jesus felt about shaming (and stoning) sinners in John 8.
I think you spend far too much time getting yourself twisted up in scripture and squawking about it that you miss the core values and bigger picture.

Funny you forget verse 5 of that scripture that says she who judges is in fact a hypocrite herself.
In the Bible, Jesus rebukes a fever, demons, the elements (wind, etc), Simon Peter, James and John (for wanting to rain hellfire on the Samaritans), and his Disciples. No where have I seen it written where Jesus commands that Christains should go around rebuking others.
You mentioned the Pharisees. There is a perfect example on how Jesus felt about shaming (and stoning) sinners in John 8.
I think you spend far too much time getting yourself twisted up in scripture and squawking about it that you miss the core values and bigger picture.
Yes, the Bible teaches to rebuke false teaches according to the authority of scripture. We are to make judgements according to the authority of scripture, not our personal opinions or biases. That's what it's teaching. I don't hate catholics. But their teachings go against scripture, so I'm judging that based on what the Bible says....not by my personal feelings. I haven't met a priest that I don't respect. I know saved Christians in the Catholic congregation. Honestly....I think people are so touchy about Christian beliefs that they jump to conclusions. It's the only world view in which outsiders don't take the time to fully understand, yet get defensive and attempt to correct or dictate. Much like shen keeps pointing out, the more Muslims destroy everywhere they go....the more dislike of Christianity there is. It's odd, and prophetic. Do people even really take the time to think about the suggestion that Jesus told to never judge? That would mean we can't even judge our own actions. How are we to repent? Notice in that same chapter He tells us to remove the log from our own eye so we can see clearly to remove the spec from our brothers eye. This is telling us to not use hypocritical judgement. It is not telling us to never judge. Also....we are to speak truth in love. Not do it malisciously. My beliefs are not secular. My beliefs are Christain....it's not a weekend hobby for me. I read this whole thread and took particular interest in the rejection of Catholicism as a Christian faith.
Despite her humorous inability to spell Christian, Dove makes a well reasoned and well supported argument for why she believes what she does. It is clear that she has studied the issue and in my opinion, there are no discernible gaps in her arguments beyond complete rejection of the doctrine, at which point the argument ceases to be relevant (as per Shen's comments).
As she says, in many ways, the Catholic church does not follow and in fact contradicts the teachings of Christ and of the Bible. It is reasonable for someone who takes a more orthodox approach to say that this precludes them from being Christians and I see no reason why she should not be well within her rights to do so. The Catholic church's historical role in developing and propagating the religion is undeniable and to me, it seems a bit petty to deny them as Christians, but it is justifiable.
I also learned a little bit more of the context (and frequent erroneous use) of the "Judge not lest ye be judged" phrase.
Anyway, it has been an interesting discussion.

To understand it you should be reading in the original language (whatever that is), the original version. Translations alter meaning when there aren't words to trade directly, and for other reasons.
I do. Have a study bible with greek/hebrew. I also have a Torah. Aramaic is ancient hebrew. Hermeneutics is something anyone who studies needs a decent grasp of.

I hope you graduate on to different subjects. If you're willing to go that deeply - you could learn a lot - really have some good experiences.
When I approached this I wasn't looking for religion. I wanted to know God. So I'm a biblist. I am never disappointed.
If you wanted to know about a god why didn't you just kill yourself and get the express train to afterlifeville?
