Title: 2015-2016 Hockey Season
Post by: @realAzhyaAryola on October 11, 2015, 10:13:31 AM
It seems my team's Captain is getting better by the year. This was at last night's game against the New Jersey Devils. Through his own legs and then top shelf. Wow. Amazing! ...and the crowd goes wild!

It is a thing of beauty.

Quote from: "Herman"Winnipeg Jets are looking good.

Unfortunately, the NHL aka Gary Bettman will never let them win Herman, nor any other Canadian team for that matter.

That League and the outcomes are fixed so that only Big Market High TV revenue teams can win.

Not even small market US teams have much of a chance.

Plus the NHL is a poorly run enterprise, andits quality is going steadily downhill.

Idiot Bettman would rather keep a money losing franchise in Arizona than move it to a more profitbale locale.

I bet Regina would be a better location than Phoenix. If Winnipeg could host a team, then so could Saskatchewen.

Isn't that where Gordie Howe was from?

I saw parts of that game, and I thought the Canucks looked slow as molasses and fell asleep when they had the lead.

Washington looked like a faster skating more highly skilled team.

If Vancouver plays like that from now on, its gonna be a long season for they and their fans.

The other thing - the Canucks lack a star marquee player such as Alexander Ovechkin, who can score at will.

Good players are able to do that. They sneak up on a team, pop in two or three goals and the game you thought was in the bag is no longer, and is lost.

Btw, since I'm not a Canucks fan, I am able to judge their performace with an open mind.

You act as if there is some secret to playing the game? Puck in the goal, amid all the slipping, fighting, etc. The good fighters lean to hang on to the other guy to get a punch in before slipping to the ice. I'd take soccer, LeCrosse, any day. Whats there to know, about hockey? Women's field hockey  makes more sense.

Right now the World Juniors are underway. European and North American youngsters who are the very best in the world all are vying for a medal and and a coveted and rare shot on a pro team. It's a physical game, but only those with the skills make it.

You are partly correct, Fashy. My youngest played one season and declared it is not for him. His older brother on the other hand has hockey in his veins. Even after working until 10 p.m. he will go to a hockey game that starts at 11 p.m. Phew! He was told not to score too much or they'll be bumped to the next level which his team's owner does not want. Hahaha!

It's okay, Fash. I can be judgmental to someone I deem has a distorted perception of something I have experience in. If I happen to like hockey because of a host of reasons, no one is going to tell me that hockey is only all about fighting because it ain't and they need to realize their perception is just wrong. The NHL has thousands of players who have never been in a fight at all, ever.

You know the reason for the disappointing result?

It's because Canada's aren't trained properly to play on the International Ice Surface.

It's like 20-30% bigger than the standard NHL rink.

Americans do a better job of training their players on the larger ice surfaces and international competitions. They have since 1960 when they won gold at Squaw Valley and again at Lake Placid in 1980 against one of the best teams of all time, the Soviet Red Army.

Canadians, especially the youngins oughta ditch the smaller NHL surface, move up to a much larger one.

Canada has to start playing on the same ice surface that everyone else does.

They they might win more Junior championships.

Quote from: "Fashionista"
Quote from: "Azhya Aryola"In Helsinki, Finland, at the IIHF World Junior Championship, future NHL stars have earned their medals. The standings:

Gold - Finland

Silver - Russia

Bronze - USA

There you have it. I'm surprised Canada did not place in the top 3 but made it to 6th place of the top 10. Say wha...???

Finland

Russia

USA

Sweden

Czech Republic

Canada

Slovakia

Denmark

Switzerland

Belarus

A very disappointing year for team Canada..

Knowing hockey as much as I do, I know that how a team does during the season has little to do with how they do in the playoffs but my team has been on top of the entire league since the season began, far ahead of the others. They are a different team this year.

Peter Bondra remained in this area, can you believe that? He is sweet. I believe he remained here for his children since they would have to be uprooted if they moved back to where they came from or to some place else. The last I saw him was at our sons' tournaments. He often shows up as a guest coach at hockey camps or accepts invitations at schools to demonstrate hockey. I knew he would show up at alumni games for the Caps as well and probably still does.

He was the general manager of the Slovakia national team from 2007 to 2011, according to Wikipedia.

If he thinks he can win a cup with the Caps, he will stay. When he knows he only has a couple of years left and he sees no hope for the Caps, he will request a trade.

2. San Jose Sharks - they eliminated the LA Kings in 5 games too and the Kings were good this season

I saw a bit of the Tampa Pittsburgh game last night.

I was expecting to see some really fast wide open hockey

Instead, I was stunned to see how slow it seemed. They don't skate anymore, they hobble. It has the look and feel of NFL linebackers on skates.

Its not like the days of the old Montreal Canadians or Edmonton Oilers.

Todays NHL has become very sluggish. Too much trapping as well.

Ironically the ones who display the old pretty style of play now a la Gretzky are the International Womens Hockey. Wide open hockey, passing, great bursts of speed, nice skating, a grasp of the fundamentals. Womens hockey today is what NHL hockey was like 20-30 years ago. I suppose that era is long gone never to return. Oh well.

QuotePlayers pile up in front of goaltender Garret Sparks during the Maple Leafs-St. Louis Blues game on Saturday night.

Goal production is down to 2.65 goals per game this season.
(The Associated Press)

QuoteTORONTO — - I almost feel like a traitor writing this.

But the truth is, the last few years, it has been increasingly difficult to sit through an NHL game — and this from a guy who grew up playing and loving the sport.

There's something about the NHL game that turns me off now. Hockey people talk about how the skill level has never been higher. And they're right. But that's part of the problem — all these big, fast-skating players, and the fact that they're all playing suffocating, tight checking systems, have choked out space and time and with it offence and creativity. There's no room for dashing offensive play anymore. Why do you think 4-on-4 hockey is so exciting? Because there is room to create. There's room to skate.

Not only is goal production down this year (2.65 goals per game), the types of goals we see are often less than spectacular. The idea now seems to be just try to get the puck towards the net and hope for a deflection or a rebound. But even getting shots on goal is increasingly difficult with 10 big guys crowding the defensive zone and wingers diving at shots. So many shots and passes are blocked now, it's maddening.

Wayne Gretzky suggested in a piece by our Mike Zeisberger this week that perhaps the NHL should look into new posts that deflect pucks into the net as way of bumping up goal production in league. Not a bad idea, but to me the problem with the NHL now goes beyond just a lack of goals, though the league is seeing the fewest goals scored per game since 2001-02. It's a flow problem. The play gets bottled up in the neutral zone. Dump and chase has been around forever but now it seems one of the few options to create any offence.

You know what I find particularly disheartening? Seeing all these incredibly talented junior players come into the league, just knowing that their skill and creativity once they get into the NHL will be smothered.

I realize there are those who will argue that I'm wrong, that the game is better than ever. There's no denying the players are bigger, stronger, faster, but that doesn't translate into a better game. Is there a professional league anywhere in the world that agonizes over ways to improve the game as much as the NHL does? Is there a league with so many struggling franchises, season after season, as the NHL? Hands up all of you sick and tired of hearing about how the Coyotes, Hurricanes, Panthers, etc., have money and attendance problems. I don't understand how the NHL expects to attract new fans — people who didn't grow up with the game — with this brand of hockey. You actually think hockey is going to be a hit in Las Vegas? Ridiculous. It's just another cash grab (expansion fees) by NHL owners. Short-term gain for long-term problems.

I wish I had the answers on how to make NHL hockey more exciting, but short of widening the ice, I don't. But when you see the flow and flash of 4-on-4 play, you have to think that more room on the ice is the key.

Steve Simmons suggested in his Sunday column that perhaps the NHL should consider going to 4-on-4 for regulation time and 3-on-3 in OT, adding that likely will never happen. Too bad.

I've never bought into the argument that widening the ice a few feet on each side is something that can't be done. Sure you lose a couple of rows of expensive seats on each side, but if it improves the game isn't that better in the long run? There's the argument that widening the ice won't add anything, pointing out that European and international hockey can be just as boring.

And of course there's the argument making the ice bigger will take out hitting. I don't buy that either. That might be the case in Europe, but hitting in the NHL will always be there — unless the new breed of hockey people succeed in turning the game into basketball on ice with precious little contact.

Fighting is also largely diminished, which is an argument for another day. Personally, I believe fighting is exciting at the NHL level. Certainly not in kids' hockey, but NHL players know what they're getting into. As kids, if the Big Bad Bruins or the Broad Street Bullies were coming into town, we'd all get pumped up about the game and debate who on the Leafs was going to stand up to Stan Jonathan or Dave Schultz. I guess these days kids are supposed to get excited over whether the Leafs are going to go with James Reimer or Jonathan Bernier in net.

There are exceptions of course. There are still some great games. But too often NHL games get bogged down into two teams scrambling to find space and open lanes to the net. And it gets repetitive and boring.

I like hard-hitting hockey but I also like dash and flash and creativity, which we don't seem to get very much in NHL hockey anymore. Now I know why Don Cherry talks about how much he loves watching minor midget games.

Criticisms of the game of hockey is futile, in my opinion. When your team never does well, it's natural to become bitter and look for things to complain about. Hockey does not need critics. It's doing just fine and will always be a fun sport for players, coaches, and fans alike. It has become faster than ever before.

....thing is, I don't have a 'favorite team' anymore, Asia. And I've never identified with the Vancouver Canucks. Other than some great Russians who once played for them, they are usually a boring team to watch. If it came down to supporting a favorite, the Edmonton Oilers might come as close to fitting that bill.

Its mostly blech faceless generic cardboard type players and games I see these days. It has no creativity or imagination anymore.

I only wish a really great player like Bobby Orr or Wayne Gretzky would come along and transform the game again. And I don't even care where they come from or which team they're on. Could be Russian, Czech, American, whatever. Remember those great Russian, Czech players who came out of the Iron Curtain? They were wonderful. For that matter so was American Pat Lafontaine. Skilled, fast, innovative and exciting to watch. They really elevated the game to a higher level and made it fun to watch.

There is something which is missing from today's game.

No there isn't anything missing with the game. It is just as fun to watch today. I'm sorry you are stuck in the past. Switch to baseball.

Azhya, what are your feelings about four on four hockey?
Title: Re: 2015-2016 Hockey Season

Good question, Fash. As a spectator, it does not matter to me. 3-3, 4-4, as long as it's fun. However, to my hockey player who has speed, he claims it would be nice. There would be more space to work with and less meat, pads, and sticks on the ice. Probably less ricocheting of the puck on shin and elbow pads.

I asked the opinion of a hockey player.

AA: Son, what do you think of these complainers who think that hockey is no longer as exciting today as they claim it used to be, and that the NHL should adjust to 4 on 4 games?

Hockey Player: They're idiots. That's not how the game is played. Those complainers are usually the ones who never played hockey. We hockey players don't see it that way at all. Who are these idiots you speak to?

AA: Um, well, er, ah, hm...

Sorry but that's the opinion of a hockey player. Though not a pro, still a hockey player who loves the game and how it's played.

The players would probably like it, but it would mean fewer jobs for players.

Great game last night, Fash. That's what I call a good hockey game. I'm not a Penguins or a Sharks fan so may the best team win.

Tonight is Game 4, Fash. The first two games were in Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh won those 2 games. Well, on game 3 in San Jose, the Sharks won so the Penguins are ahead 2 games to 1 game for the Sharks. If the Sharks win tonight in San Jose, they will be tied.

San Jose is too slow for Pittsburgh.

TB was good enough to keep up with the Penguins, but not SJ.

Real final was the last series between TB and Pitt

I agree. Pittsburgh appears to be the more solid team but I always like to see an upset. The Sharks could still pull it off.

I'm already having withdrawals. I like a hockey game nightly but no games tonight.

Other than the TB Pitt series, the playoffs were a rather dull affair.

Still, I respect Sydney Crosby because at least he wins the big games and earns his keep.  However, he makes a case for slashing the salaries of underperforming players whose teams don't go far in the playoffs or don't make it all.

Hockey should adopt a model for incentive based salaries like golf or tennis, where the players only make as much as how often they win.

The better team did win. I did not see an upset this time. Oh well. Next time maybe.

It's better to win the cup at your home rink. While the Penguins were celebrating, the stadium was almost half empty. Fans of their opponents cleared out fast it seems. Aw.

I wanted the Pens to win it in game 5 too. But, it wasn't meant to be.
