Title: Do You Consider 2.5% A Good Rate Of Return?
Post by: the shark hunter on October 19, 2015, 07:16:38 PM
... an ad for an internet bank caught my attention the other day ...

... the bank was advertising how it'll pay 2.5% interest on money you deposit there.  i don't know the details but i'm assuming you have to invest your cash into a GIC or term deposit to get this rate ...

... now i'm no financial expert, but it seems to me that this is an UNBELIEVABLY ATTRACTIVE RATE for a fixed income investment these days ...

... am i right about this?  is 2.5% something to get excited about?

... comments?

Term deposits over here are being offered at the same 2.5

I won't invest or park my money for less than annual inflation rate coverage.

... thanks for your reply, Diana.  i always enjoy your comments ...

... i was perusing corporate bonds recently though which usually pay well and anything over two percent was either too junky-looking or you had to lock in for five years plus ...

That is exceptional considering most banks are offering five year GIC's at 1.5%. Canada Savings Bonds are paying well below the rate of inflation too. A high-interest savings account such as the one available from new retail bank Ally, owned by GMAC Financial Services, which pays 2 per cent.

... and yes, i agree, the rate does seem too good to be true for just showing up at a bank with some cash to deposit.  as Herman said, there must be a catch ...
