Title: Is it safer for a Forum to have their own Server?
Post by: J0E on December 03, 2015, 03:01:24 PM
...in light of the Blue Cashew's interruption, would this prevent it from going down?

Or is this for all intents and purposes, prohibitively expensive & too cumbersome?

Or does it not make any difference? Or perhaps a backup server is needed for occasions such as this?

Is it just a technical glitch that cannot be avoided?

Anyway, it'd be interested to hear feedback on the issue.

I know Keeper has a lot of personal problems.

At this time of the year, we need to be more understanding with each other.

...Oh well!

We do have our own server.  Back-ups are done regularly.

It was a failure of the actual hard-drive on the machine where we were being hosted.  We needed staff at the provider to recover the information from our disk and put it on a new one.  The trouble was, they took their time doing it.

As a result, we are discussing a new hosting provider with a faster response time should something like this arise again.  We will also be organising space on another server should the need arise for us to move the site temporarily for any repairs or outages.

Steps are being taken to ensure this doesn't happen again.

It was just an innocent question. I worked at a place where the hard drive on the server had failed.

But in that event, the backup server kicked in and was able to take off where the main one broke down.

Apparently, the contents of the main server had been 'mirrored' on the backup, so resurrecting it quickly was not an issue.

And there was minimal delay.

So they had two hard drives in place in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

That's similar to what will be in place going forward.

Bullshit. Nothing you post is "in innocence"

Anyhow, "good work" to those who got it  back running. THANK YOU for that and for ALL your efforts
