That one is after the bucket.

I've thought about doing that too. I've been encouraged to run municipally but I think I'd be crushed if I lost.

Do you speak of politics? First wife became interested, and was quite successful, on the State level. She was way liberal. Something I would never consider.
1. A healthy outcome to what's coming up.
2. Buy property abroad.
3. Control my temper.
1. Get all my children out of the house and on their own.
2. Fit back into the clothes I wore in HS.
2. Become a crazy hermit lady living with like 30 dogs.
3. Die and be dead for weeks before any one discovers my half eaten body.

By the time I got to Catholic school, beating on kids was seriously frowned upon. I was a suck up so I never got the beats. I did see a kid get strapped to his desk and another got picked up by a teacher who put his head in a garbage can.
The nuns, although grumpy, were old and harmless for the most part. You sure didn't fuck with them though.
I actually got transferred from public school because of a principal who had it out for me. I once brought an industrial first aid book to school and got sent home for bringing in pornography. That guy was a lying sack of shit who made my life hell and some 20 years later, I helped get him fired from my kids' school. It was something I crossed off my bucket list in fact.

Some of the old school nuns really were, especially if the didn't like you or if you had a learning disability, like me. AND the really old ones..... smelled like ass :yuk:
The only saving grace was that the school I went to had a lot of lay teachers because the ancient nuns were retiring or dying faster than they could replace them.

It was frowned upon when I went to school as well. In fact the school policy was no corporal punishment at all but they lied. They also had no problem threatening kids with physical harm or using humiliation as a punishment for minor infractions or if you were unlucky enough to have difficulty keeping up academically. I can remember on more than one occasion being called stupid or dumb and being made an example of in front of the class. Add that to being the fat unpopular kid and my life was a fucking hell.

I remember those who did not keep up academically were not treated kindly by teachers. Us kids couldn't have cared less who was stupid or not. We also had really small class sizes which made the learning environment much better IMHO. My class was rife with bullies though and no, I was not one of them. (A classmate of mine ended up going to jail for 11 years for kidnapping and sodomizing a woman with a liquour bottle.)
We really only had one nun who taught us religion. We'd get priests in training in to teach as well and we tortured the shit out of them. We had one named Bart. He had Coke bottle glasses and we didn't give him an inch. He did become a priest in spite of us. Our head priest wasn't a man you fucked with. We had another priest named John who would come and visit. He was kind and wore Jesus sandals. We all loved him. We also loved our Monsignor who was also gentle and kind. We didn't have any kiddy diddler types, or at least none that have come to light.
That said, my grade 7 teacher got fired years after I left for supervising grade 7 girls changing who were taking too long. He got fired and I don't know what became of him after that. He wasn't a priest or anything.

Don't get me wrong, there were a few teachers that were decent like my 2nd grade remedial reading teacher. She was the first teacher to recognize that I had actual learning disabilities and that I wasn't just stupid or lazy. She also picked up on the fact that I needed glasses which helped me emensely.
As for bullies, it seems all Catholic schools are full of them. From kindergarten through the 4th grade my mom will tell you that I came home from school in tears at least 4 out of 5 days a week. I was bullied, beat up and tormented endlessly. It also didn't help that I was shy and so timid that I was literally afraid of my own shadow.
Then in the 5th grade something snapped in me emotionally and I said I've had enough and I started to fight back. Unfortunately I got into so many fights (one perticularly bad one) that my parents were called to school and it was strongly suggested that they NOT sign me up for 6th grade. So my parents packed me off to public school where I discovered I wasn't the only awkward fat kid out anymore and that there were kids just as screwed up as me and a lot worse.

Since the 19th century, funding for the Roman Catholic separate school system was provided up to Grade 10 under the British North America (BNA) Act. In 1984 the government of Premier William Davis extended full funding to include the last three (Grades 11–13 (OAC)) years of Roman Catholic secondary schools after having rejected that proposal fifteen years earlier. The first funded academic year occurred in 1985–86, as grade 11, and one grade was added in each of the next two years.

So funded based on grades (three of them).
Separate schools were fully funded up to grade 10 prior to 1984. Starting in September 1985, separate school would add each additional year to the end of grade 13.
http://torontoist.com/2011/09/catholic-schools-separate-but-equal-funding/
By the 20th century, the consensus was that the laws on the books covered funding for separate schools up to grade 10. Beyond that, students either entered the public system for free or coughed up tuition fees for private schools that covered the remaining secondary school grades.
Flash forward to the end of Davis's tenure. On June 12, 1984, he shocked Queen's Park by announcing that as of September 1985, starting with one grade per year, full funding would be extended to separate secondary schools. Indicating that he hoped the move would heal "a long and heartfelt controversy," Davis received a standing ovation from all parties in the legislature. Families would no longer have to pay up to $1,100 a year in tuition to send their kids to high schools that would no longer be private, while officials in cities like Toronto looked forward to easing their overcrowded conditions with new facilities. Some concessions were forced onto separate school boards: they would have to accept any students and, over the next 10 years, had to agree to hire any non-Catholic teachers laid off from the public system due to shifting enrolments.

I know my mom paid fees when I went. It was over $400 a month for my sister and I and that was in the 80s.
If there are fees in Alberta, I doubt they would be that high because I can't see my co worker being able to afford it..
Maybe, I won't ask her if any fees are involved..
I am not thinking of taking my children out of their private school and putting them in a publicly funded one ever.
if you can afford private school, its definitely the way to go....
My husband and I agree deadskinmask, which is why we invest so much of our income into private education.
we sent ours to private schools when possible.... better quality of education foremost but also for safety reasons.... alabama public schools are like zoos with desks.... :(

I am sure your parents did shell out large for it. Provinces have a good deal of autonomy and Ontario is really different.
http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/separate-school/
The politics of separate-school funding in Ontario are in many ways unique. Thanks to recent large-scale immigration from Catholic Europe (from countries such as Italy and Portugal), 37% of Ontario's population is Catholic and about 34% of elementary students are in separate schools. Of the 160 elementary school boards, 57 were Catholic and only one was Protestant. From September 1987 all separate schools have been funded on the same basis as public schools. For Francophones in some regions of the province, there was (until September 1985) another way to receive public funds for Catholic students in grades 11 to 13: they attended public French secondary schools. Significantly, this required a shift in emphasis from religion to ethnicity and language. The number of school boards dropped to 87 in the late 1990s.

Our public schools have gangs here, so Alabama is not alone.
There are many things I'd like to accomplish during my remaining time here.
One of them is to one day play this particular piece flawlessly like this performer just to say I did it....
Domenico Scarlatti - Sonata G major K2 L 388 p 58 Presto
First step is ta git a hold of the sheet music....

It was a little shot at Mel. Condos are fine if that what you like.
I know several people who own condos and they seem quite happy. I wouldn't be surprised if one or more lived in the same building as Mel.

In the US most states have a pretty strict fire code for attached dwellings. In many areas having a propane fired grill is a no-no. Propane tanks explode and propane grills cannot be kept within 20 feet of a door or window opening.
Of course this doesn't address the issue of charcoal grills which are probably just as dangerous, if not more so. Every year hundreds of people set fire to their homes with barbecue grills. Between 2005 and 2009 over 8,000 were reported in the US alone because people are DUMB!
If you are going to burn your own home down that perfectly fine with me. But when you live in attached housing and the chances are that you will burn or neighbors house down as well; that's a completely different story. Most smart condo associations forbid outdoor grilling and with good reason.
And for that exact reason, Renee I would not want to live in a condo or an apartment. I've lived in an apartment in the past and some people were down right scary when they bbq'd.

Also with condos I don't like is that you could be high up in one. I'm terrified of heights, even on a balcony. The 3rd or 4th floor maybe but any higher up would be just too much.

That's how I see it too, but down town high rise living is popular in Calgary and many other cities.
It's popular because they're close to shopping and always have an excellent view, unless they're the unfortunate ones who have a building built next to them blocking their view. That would suck.

I own a condo on the third floor and I bbq all the time. I can apply to the association to convert my balcony to a closed in Florida room if I wish. I have no exterior maintenance problems, I don't own a lawnmower nor a snowblower. Condo living for me is convenient and worry free.
