Title: Alberta teen injured after he says e-cigarette exploded
Post by: Anonymous on January 26, 2016, 08:46:19 PM
http://globalnews.ca/news/2479197/alberta-teen-injured-after-he-says-e-cigarette-exploded/

Lethbridge, Alta.- An Alberta teen is facing a long and expensive recovery after being injured when he says an e-cigarette blew up on him.

According to Ty Greer, he and a friend were smoking an e-cigarette when Ty said it exploded in his mouth.

"It was horrible," said Perry Greer, Ty's father. "No father should have to witness that."

Perry said his son suffered first and second-degree burns as a result of the explosion. Pictures of the teen reveal charred, blackened skin and fractured teeth.

"There was a fireball about two feet and it started his gym bag on fire," Perry explained.

According to Perry, Ty drove himself to hospital and he arrived later to comfort him. He said his son's pain was so severe that he just held him until the morphine kicked in.

Ty's brother Zane said the incident has brought him and his brother closer.

"The whole situation has given me a new perspective on how I feel about my brother," said Zane. "I was so close to losing him."

Perry described Ty as a talented hockey player who has never smoked tobacco. He said his son purchased the e-cigarette from a store in north Lethbridge. The owner of the store declined comment to Global News.

"I have talked with the owner of the store," said Perry. "He's very remorseful. He cried the whole time I talked to him."

Ty now faces a series of expensive dental surgeries as he prepares for a long recovery.

I smoke and have done so regularly since high school. I am giving vaping serious consideration.

I hear if you wear a mouth guard and give yourself a blo...nevermind.

I used to smoke.  I quit cold turkey.  I use a vape for marijuana (I have a pen and a desktop version - both electric charge).  My husband uses a vape for e-smoking.

I also own mouth guards - one for sports and one because I grind my teeth.

This story kinda reminds me of the time I was workin' in the bush, when one morning, I lit the gas stove, put it on high heat in the tent, and it went out of control and my clothes got on fire. It burned me beard off, singed much of the hair off of it. I quickly ran outta the tent rolled around on the dirt on the grass ta put the flames out. Luckily, I never paid the price like the young man did with his e-cig for my foolish misadventure. I just burned a couple of holes through my clothes and singed my beard off.

Anyways, that was a rivetting experience to light myself on fire like that that I'll never ferget. It reminded me of the sayin', "If you walk inta the fire, make sure ya make it out alive."

I know of 4 ppl now that have quit using e-cigs when everything they have tried failed. I'm not sure what the comparison is but it's like 20 to 2000 and it's vapor not smoke.

E cigs weren't around 11 years ago when I quit. I did it cold turkey when I finally had enough of being broke and hacking up my lungs. My son gave me excellent advice on how to quit...he said "just don't buy any!" lolol I found the best way for the cravings was gum and chips with dip. But I ended up gaining a bunch of weight.  Another good piece of advice from my kid was "I'd rather you be over weight than die of cancer".  Took me a few years of dieting because after quitting my taste buds went WOW! Food is soo good now!    Hubby has finally quit smoking cigars, it's been a whole month now

Could the batteries in it been defective? Also another thing could be those smart meters. We have one on the side of the house, things turn off and on by themselves. With all the radio waves, cell phones, etc, who knows what sets what off.

Most of the vapor is water. Water doesn't explode.

The only thing that could explode is the battery and there is a slim chance of that.

Seems the chemicals used in the e-cigs are not so healthy. "Popcorn Lung".....
QuoteDo e-cigarettes cause popcorn lung?

It is not only microwave popcorn that contains dangerous chemical flavorings such as diacetyl. A study published in 2015 in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives showed that harmful chemicals associated with "popcorn lung" are present in many types of flavored e-cigarettes, particularly those with flavors like fruit and candy that may appeal to young smokers. Of the 51 flavored e-cigarettes tested, flavoring chemicals were found in 47 and diacetyl specifically in 39 samples. This suggests a potentially dangerous level of exposure via e-cigarettes to chemicals that can cause severe lung damage.

So the question remains,... what cause the e-cig to explode?

I find it difficult to believe that the small lithium batteries found in E-cigs would explode with that much force and magnitude for no reason.

I did a little digging on the subject and I found that e-cigs can explode and have exploded. But it is rare and in most of the cases it was found that the e-cig was either charged improperly or it had been tampered with and modified by the user. All of the reputable e-cig companies build in safety features that prevent over heating which limits the chance of a mishap. But that doesn't mean the safety feature can't fail.

Given the rarity and extremely low probability of an e-cig explosion, I'd say these kids fucked around with it in order to get a bigger vapor cloud or the victim is just an extremely unlucky individual. In fact so unlucky that I would not stand next to him during a lightening storm. :laugh3:
