Title: Would you eat this Frankenfood?
Post by: shin on March 05, 2016, 02:59:31 PM
There seems to be a trend with combining foods that would never otherwise end up on the same plate.

First up: Sushi burrito

Would you eat this?

That's really just giant sushi.  I don't know how you would get through the nori (seaweed) though.

It's not to my taste.

I didn't say that, I've eaten at a lot of great food trucks and carts. In college the grease trucks was a Friday and Saturday night ritual. In fact when I find myself in New Brunswick I still make it a point of stopping by.

Home of the famous "Fat Bitch" sandwich.

//http://ruhungrynj.net

//https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grease_trucks

Also in many places street food trucks have really stepped up their game. Many are dishing out gourmet style sandwiches of various cuisines.

Nowadays my job takes me into NYC a couple a times a month and most days lunch is a hot dog from a street vendor and a bottle of water or a hot pretzel.

If you come to NYC and don't have at least one hot dog from a street cart, you're a God damn pussy ass geek. :laugh3:

Anyway, I would eat an old sock laying in the gutter before I would ever touch KFC again. The smell alone makes me queasy. :beurk:

It looked like a good idea to me at the moment, but then I imagined cerfain small aspects of sushi would become a lot more noticeable, like wasabi and soy sauce ratio to rice, and like RW mentioned, chewy nori.

I looked up a place in town that sells them for under $10, $5 if you get there before 2 PM. I'm cringing at the alleged quality of their raw fish after reading that.

It's a good idea in concept, but one or two ingredients on each of them is offputting enough to make me not want to try any of them (I'm finicky  :negative:  )

You bet your KFC lovin' ass they are.

I used to do large event fundraisers on golf courses and even to get a vendor to serve hot dogs (even though they are pre-cooked) required a permit and the health inspector would come out in the morning to check everything was properly set up before we started.  They don't mess around.

You can actually review Japadog on that site if you want to see how their carts are doing in terms of meeting requirements.

True, the ones I go in in New York are as clean as any restaurant. They are also more upscale than the average. It's the local take-out places you have to be careful of. Some of them run kinda slipshot and you never know if the chicken and broccoli is actually chicken......or cat. :laugh3:

I was reading about a card system of red, yellow, and green cards that restaurants had to display prominently to show their inspection status.  Green means fully compliant, yellow means 1-2 critical non-compliance issues and red means they had been shut down for major infractions.

I really like the idea of knowing the status before eating at restaurants/carts/etc.

I used to work in a restaurant when I was a teenager, and from what I learned back then, every public place of bisuness is subject to health inspections of some kind. It's not even limited to freshly made food or places that sell edible products.

Part of the reason they sweep and mop the floors  daily in places of business has to do with the health code. I believe this is pretty much true across the board in the first world.

Even if you open a lemonade stand and somebody gets sick who recently purchased something from you at that stand, you can face fines of up to $100,000 through OSHA, and the availability of public health records would probably fall under HIPAA. No one generally sues vendors who seem to not be able to pay the exorbitant fines that have made many an attorney wealthy, so we don't hear about these things much. Plus, it would most likely fall under appellate court rulings... but that's just here in the U.S.

Burger King went to the dark side. This curious creation comes with black cheese (dyed with bamboo charcoal) and a black bun. You'll also find squid ink in the onion-garlic sauce.

In New Orleans, there were these guys who used to drive around in a pick up with a full on grill and sell the best pulled pork and bbq you ever had. They'd go to businesses and sell to employees and whoever else. It was cheap, large portions, and amazing.

When we were in Winnipeg, there was a converted milk truck like that..

I like the Caplanski's trucks. Best Jewish deli anywhere aside from Katz's in New York City.

Have you ever seen Bar Rescue? Not every bar or restaurant is following the rules.

I've never heard of it, but it would depend on where these places are. It's not unheard of to bribe the officers.

I have a pretty strong stomach, so I've never gotten too ill from eating even slightly spoiled food. If someone were to try poisoning me, that would be a different story altogether.

Burger King went to the dark side. This curious creation comes with black cheese (dyed with bamboo charcoal) and a black bun. You'll also find squid ink in the onion-garlic sauce.

Y'know... at first glance it looked repulsive because I associate that color with burnt food, but I think I would be willing to try it one day if they brought it here. I don't usually go for BK, though.

I think with me it would have a similar effect based on when I've tried eating green and red pasta. All pasta tastes different enough just based on the shape.

Regular pasta itself doesn't taste different per se (unless something has been added to it) but they all hold sauce differently.

The truth is that plain pasta by itself, has very little flavor. That's why you have to "complicate" Italian cuisine, otherwise you are just left with a plate of boiled dough.

Unfortunately I don't have a recipe for my sauce. I use a few base essential ingredients and then "wing" the rest. I learned that from my mom and it depends entirely what kind of mood you are in and what you have laying around the kitchen and garden.

I'll post a basic sauce sometime when I get a chance. Maybe I'll post a recipe for my baseball size meatballs sometime as well.

Give it a try. Don't get discouraged if it doesn't come out quite the way you want it. Each time you make it you may have to play around with the ingredients and cooking time. But it's still many times better than what comes out of a jar.

I'd go as far as saying the wider the noodle, the more bitter it's likely to be (not that noodles are at all bitter). Also, the noodles with less surface area absorb more external flavor.

We prefer ultra thin vermicelli to any type of noodle, so you might be right shin.

All commercial plain pastas taste the same. Unless they are flavored with something or they are a specialty pasta such as whole wheat or gultin free, they are made from the same ingredients. Any perceived difference in taste is, for the most part, psychological.

Now starch content can be different in shapes compared to spaghetti and it can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer which in turn, can affect cooking times. Cooking times affect density which can change flavor intensity but the actual flavor remains the same.

I don't think I agree with that statement. So you don't believe texture plays any role in the way our tastebuds interpret food?

I don't think texture changes taste but it can change perception. Something that has an unpleasant texture in your mouth can drive your perception of how it tastes.

Sorry dude but I've heard people say this all before but as I explained, the only variation in plain dry pasta is density and starch content.

No need to be sorry.

Looks like you're right. I was initially thinking about how lasagna noodles don't taste like spaghetti, but they also have different recipes... and I was going to follow up by using long grain vs. short grain rice. The surface area argument doesn't present enough of a factor as far as how taste is measured.

You also have to overcook it or it has a very strong wheat flavor. There is no such thing as al dente with whole wheat pasta. I don't like overcooked pasta.

Overcooked pasta is when it loses it's body and becomes mushy.

That happens when we cook thicker fettucine, but not thin spaghettini whole wheat pasta.

i was given some uncooked whole wheat spaghetti last month. I overcooked it just out of caution that I realized it would taste "different".

Al dente is probably the way most pasta purists would describe how they prefer their pasta cooked. The easiest way of comparing it would be to illustrate how most people prefer their toast: more on the lighter side of cooked for what boils down to aesthetic reasons learned mostly through learned preference and repetition.

Yes, it is a real product.

It's so gross, it's hard to watch to the end.

It seems like a lot of work for anyone to go through for the novelty of looking at it or taking a picture.

I think I'd rather chew on one of my dirty socks.

Dirty socks have more nutrition.

I had one of these yesterday.

The taco shell is fried chicken. I told them to hold the avocado ranch sauce. it was pretty good, but smaller than that picture suggests.

That's exactly what I thought!

Although the double down was more of a fast food cholesterol/fat overkill.

Did you know KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut are owned by the same parent company? Some places have hybrid restaurants.

Of course it is. I bet even the salads at fast food places are unhealthy... or at least lack enough nutrients to warrant eating them.
