Title: High School Memories
Post by: Renee on March 08, 2016, 11:29:32 AM
How do you remember your High School years? Do you remember your High School years? Did you enjoy them or were you miserable?

Since every school has its cliques and groups who did you hang out with, where did you belong? We're you in with the popular kids, where you a jock/sporto, a delinquent, a head case, a nerd, a band geek or were you a mixed bag of several of those things? Ever wonder what happened to High School friends you lost touch with?

Do you still have your High School graduation pics, your year book? Do you ever look at them and say....Holy Fuck! What was I thinking or do you look at them fondly or not think about them at all?

The reason I'm asking is because I recently came a cross my own HS pics and personal crap at my parents house and while looking at them I couldn't stop laughing. Unfortunately I think my laughter was simply a nervous reflex to cover the feeling of opportunity lost. Back then I thought I knew it all, time sure has proven that wrong.  Christ, was I dumb.

I did not have a horrible time in high school, but I would not want to relive those years either.

My crowd was a combo of Asians, brainiacs and jocks. I have lost touch with most of them and I am fine with that. If some of their names come up, I wonder what how they turned out. But, I usually do not give them any thought.

I do not have any high school pictures, but my mom and dad have my high school grad pictures.

I can't relate Renee because my high school was not actually a high school.

There were about sixty students in two portables from grades six through twelve on the grounds of a church..

There were another thirty or so students inside the church from kindergarten through grade five.

Fairly decent high school days. Freshman and sophomore years in a catholic school that closed down. Ran with a decent crowd. Had keys to the school and a storage room that held our stash of alcohol in the ceiling. Junior year catholic school nothing major. Senior year public school in the work program and allowed to leave at noon every day. Skipped one day a week to go to the beach. I would go back if for no other reason than to do well enough to get a scholarship to college. Always a big s.o.b. so was left alone and never bullied in school...

Typical insecurities but not enough to ruin my youth....LOL

I would love to go back to high school.  I'd have a lot more fun than I did.

I got along with every clique for the most part.  Most of them would sit by me to get answers off of haha.  I don't know what I was though.  I hung out with a lot of band geeks but even the popular folks took band so they weren't really dorks.  I played a lot of full contact sports so I got on with the jocks.  I hung with the computer geeks on occasion.  I did drama and wrote a play do I got on okay with them.  I smoked weed once in a while so I got on with the druggies.  One of my friends knew a lot of skids so we'd party with them sometimes.  I was a member of the chess club, debated and did math tutoring so I got on with the nerds.  I also had a popular older brother so I knew a lot of his friends as well and went to their parties where all the sluttier popular girls hung out.

I used to skip out a lot and hitch hike to neighbouring towns.  Sometimes my bestie and I would spend the day at their school or we'd meet up with older guys and get drunk.  I never dated any one I went to school with only older guys.

I had a lot of fun during my school days.

I hated high school.

I did not fit in, utterly failed to see the point of the crap they were filling out heads with (and still do) and did not have confidence and self esteem to socialise at any level, thus becoming an outsider.

I had a blast most of the time back in high school. Being a farm kid, I took the big yellow bus for the first year and a half and then dirt bikes, the old man's trucks or old beaters to school. On the bus, I always sat at the back and smoked.

I was a metalhead who could fight. I harassed and bullied geeks, smoked pot in the washrooms, did acid in the cafeteria and got blow jobs in the old man's truck with Motley Crue cranked while parked beside the smoking area. In between all this I got in lots of fights, got suspended for threatening to punch out a teacher, never played sports and didn't go one week being sober.

Only regret I had was I would not have been such a bully. I get along well now with some of them that I picked on. It's fun to get together and joke about our crazy youth.

For once, your flaccid attempts at mockery actual have some roots in fact; I, like many others, sought authority and respect via wearing a uniform.

When I realised it didn't fit any more, I left.

But, trust me on this, I was not alone in using the badge as a psychological back brace.

I went to a very diverse high school. It was about 30% South Asian, 25% white, 15% East Asian(including SE Asians), 10% Aboriginal and 20% everything else. Most people self-segregated especially in year one. They intermingled a lot more by the end of year 3(grade 12) or if they played sports or were into music or drama.

I had an acne problem and stuck with fellow East Asians. In grade 12 I was on the girls volleyball team(my only time I ever played team sports). I was definitely a different person by the end of high school than I was when I began.

You think that's a secret. The only people dumb enough to think that's a hidden problem are cops.

The root cause of why cops have such high rates of divorce, domestic abuse, alcoholism, and suicide is not job stress; it's because they are psychologically maladjusted and fucked up from the get go.

I did a lot of crazy and frankly, rotten shit as a teenager but I don't think I ever thought of school as a place to have sex. In my mind, next to church, it's about as unsexy a place as it gets.

Now that doesn't include the grounds (sports fields, etc) or the student parking lot. ac_biggrin  ac_blush

High school is 3 years in Alberta(grades 10-12) because we have junior high. However, I thought freshman, sophomore, junior and senior were grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. It works the same for uni.

HS is typically 4 years in the States, grade 9 thru grade 12. Jr. High is usually 3 years, grade 6 thru grade 8. In some districts grade 6 is still considered grammar school.

High School:

9th - Freshman....the year you get beat up a lot

10th - Sophomore...the year everyone forgets about

11th - Junior... The important year academically

12th - Senior.... The party before college. A year of lost brain cells.

That's the best way I can describe it.

I miss record stores. You could spend hours going through racks of albums and CDs. You can still find one on occasion but they are not the same.

Nowadays you just download music to your IPod, computer or phone. It's more convenient and cheaper but it lacks the same kind of fun.

I did, but not during the time I attended it.  One of my boyfriends and I utilised the facility on a weekend when I was showing him where I went to school.

I made it all the way through highschool as a virgin.  It was mostly because the thought of telling my dad that I was pregnant was terrifying enough to make me abstain.

That, and the fact that everyone thought I was such a goody two shoes that nobody made a move.  Not until later in my clubbing days, when I discovered that I was lusted after and liked way more than I would have considered possible.  I was the kid who never fit in, straight A student, transferred in partway through the year from an all girl's school, so everyone assumed that my initial shyness was snobbery.  The guys used to tease, and I always had an answer for them, and the girls resented the attention I got from the boys, so they were more than a little bitchy.   I had a close circle of friends, and we had a ball together, so I didn't really care what anyone else thought.

I'm not normally naive but twice I was blindsided by guys I'd gone to school with...  one I was hanging out with playing pool at his house one night after a party, and he was pouring his heart out asking advice on how to make a move on a girl he was into,   this guy was the most gorgeous and popular guy at school, who was one half of the couple everyone wanted to be, and he used to save me a seat in English so that I could explain and help him and a bunch of the other guys, and after I told him that the best approach was direct... he lunged across the lounge and kissed me.  I then realised that he was talking about me.  We dated for a while.

The second one was after I'd had my eldest and was back home living with my parents, I was out clubbing with some girlfriends and we ran into a couple of guys from school, and my friends wanted to go home early, so the guys told them that they'd drop me home.  One of them suggested we go to his place for a swim, and the other one drove us all there... then left.  I went into his place and sat down while he turned on music, and he sat next to me then also kissed me, then told me he'd been wanting to do that since high school.  I dated him for a while too, and I never did get around to swimming in his pool.

None of my friends could believe that I didn't see it coming that either of them were hitting on me. And didn't let me live it down for a very long time.

I did all the time. When me and my friends would skip school we would take the train into NYC and I used to search out the little hole in the wall record shops. You could find all kinds of obscure and hard to find shit in the used bins.

Quote from: "RW"Anyone do anything sex related within the walls of your high school?

Some very interesting stories Mona.

You mean you had no problems with anyone Dove?
No no...Harmony House was a music store lol

I remember a Harmony Hut; was that the same? I believe they were bought out by the Sam Goody chain of music stores. Sam is now gone as well.

We had HMV.

I miss record stores. You could spend hours going through racks of albums and CDs. You can still find one on occasion but they are not the same.

Nowadays you just download music to your IPod, computer or phone. It's more convenient and cheaper but it lacks the same kind of fun.

It was fun going into those stores when I was a teenager..

I liked looking at the pictures and art work on CD's and movies..

They still have HMV today, but like you said it's not the same anymore.

Kind of baffles me why they come?  Maybe Herman knows? I think it has to do with past life experiences. Most SBs look to be in their 50s 60s and 70s. Well it seems that your favorite word is "assumption". Did you recently learn it from someone or did you see in the pages of an old water logged book that you found on the beach?

However you came across it, it's obvious you don't really know what it means. Everything that is being said about you here comes from either observation or straight out of your own mouth.

When I was first introduced to facebook, the discoveries were a novelty at the time. Imagine, finding your long lost friends from high school, university, grade school. It was exciting then. But after years of interactions and you have determined that these "so called" friends really just want to know what you can tell them that they can gossip about, it's off putting. I do not need to get together with people who don't impact my life and I have nothing in common with except the fact we shared a school at one time, long ago.

i have a separate account specifically for the people I went to school with, to keep informed of reunions and keep in touch with those I like to talk to, but may not interact with regularly.   But I am very limited in what I share on it.  As some of my classmates are friends with my exh's new partner.  And I don't want the gossip grapevine to have anything to pass along to him.

Agreed and it will continue long after FB is gone or has evolved into something else.

Personally I don't use FB much anymore. I think my account has been idle for over a year. There is a select few people I keep contact with but more and more of my contact with old friends and relatives is done through direct email. It's just more efficient that way and takes up a lot less time.

Anyone with any sense sets their privacy settings as high as possible and doesn't use their full name on facebook.  Makes it harder for employers to trace your posts and judge them if they don't know what name you post under.

Also makes it hard to find you for friends. And for a lot of people that would defeat the purpose of being on Facebook. It would make more sense just to stay away from it.

i don't sauce ribs. its too easy to drown out the flavor.... the only time i really ever sauce is when i do briskets for sandwiches.... otherwise, i just salt n pepper em or a nice dry rub.... sometimes i aso use a jagermiester marinade and sprinkle it with coffee grounds....

barbeque here is actually done like its suppose to be most of the time. ppl get bbq and grilling out confused.... bbq is low heat and slow cooking over smoke. grilling out is high heat over hot coals.... there are alot of southerners that don't know how to do it right either. its sad....

Title: Re: High School Memories

Might as well just quote it...

Quote from: "Renee"How do you remember your High School years?

High school was perhaps the largest collective learning experience of my life. Before I went to a far away high school, I spent most of my days not leaving my neighborhood. Since my high school brought kids from all over the city together, participating in activities with them took me to the ends of the Earth... or all around the city and beyond.

Yes, we had cliques. The first one I gravitated to were people who identified with alternative music and wore dark colors. I made other friends who were jocks, metal heads, nerds, and whatnot, but there was a lot of  crossover between the cliques so at the end of the day we were all friends. It wasn't unusual to see other weirdos at parties.

I try not to look at my yearbook pictures much because it makes the nostalgia less precious. Sometimes, people post old pics on social media, and it never ceases to amaze me how they must have thought these moments were going to serve as conversation pieces with the same people 20 years later. I suppose I should add "time traveling druids" to the list of cliques.

I thought I had life figured out in my early twenties. Now I know the world is immense and so is it's knowledge base.

Regarding your HS years being the "largest collective learning experience", I'm going to have to go ahead and agree 100% with that.

I went to a regional HS which was made up of several different towns and although we weren't that ethnically diverse (85% white) we were an economically and socially diverse group. The student body came from poor blue collar families to very upper middle class families and everything in-between. Until you are thrown into a melting pot like that you don't realize or see the social ramifications of that kind of environment. It's almost like a microcosm of the real world and if you are astute enough you can learn a lot from it.

BTW, thank you for trying to put this thread back on track.  :smiley_thumbs_up_yellow_ani:

I was educated in a supposedly Christian environment, but there was overt racism..

You're welcome.

I loathed having to wake up so much earlier to travel 2 hours to school, but when it comes down to the life experiences I wouldn't trade them back for the world. I was one of 4 students from my elementary school accepted to attend this magnet school of sorts.

This is where I went to high school. (//https)
