Many of these guys got there start doing theatrical jousting for Renn Faires and medieval dinner shows.
I've seen some of these crazy fools without their clothes on and some of them look like they've been hit by a truck. Broken bones, bruises and punctured organs are common. I used to know one such "knight" that had a steel plate in his skull from being stomped by his own charger after being unhorsed. He wasn't exactly right if you know what I mean.
Full contact jousting started gaining popularity in the early 1990s. It was sort of a trial and error kind of sport. Over the years rules and equipment have evolved to help mitigate some of the injuries but I can't imagine it being any less punishing and painful.
