Title: Damn - I have been lied to all my life - Even my Mom & Granny were in on it
Post by: cc on March 14, 2016, 09:58:06 PM
That heavenly orange "yam" I have sold my soul for many times is NOT a yam

It is a sweet potato

What's in a name? When it comes to the yam, a bit of confusion. The truth is what you've been calling a yam is most likely a sweet potato. Even more, it's possible that you've never even tasted a yam!

That sweet, orange-colored root vegetable that you love so dearly is actually a sweet potato. Yes, all so-called "yams" are in fact sweet potatoes. Most people think that long, red-skinned sweet potatoes are yams, but they really are just one of many varieties of sweet potatoes. So where did all of the confusion come from? Let's break down the main differences between yams and sweet potatoes!

Yam vs. Sweet Potato: http://www.ncsweetpotatoes.com/sweet-potatoes-101/difference-between-yam-and-sweet-potato/

A true yam is a starchy edible root of the Dioscorea genus, and is generally imported to America from the Caribbean. It is rough and scaly and very low in beta carotene.

Depending on the variety, sweet potato flesh can vary from white to orange and even purple. The orange-fleshed variety was introduced to the United States several decades ago. In order to distinguish it from the white variety everyone was accustomed to, producers and shippers chose the English form of the African word "nyami" and labeled them "yams."

When the grocery store labels a bin "Yams" (orange) and the bin beside it "Sweet Potatoes" (white) they are actually selling 2 varieties of sweet potatoes

Most of us have never even tasted a yam which grow mainly in Africa & parts of Asia - which is OK because they don't taste near as good and fall far short  in nutrisional values

Oh, and I suckered my kids too

I like sweet potato fries, but my husband is also a traditionalist when it comes to the rare times he has fries.

Just made the dark orange ones, finished off by slicing in half, baste with margarine & brown sugar & broil

curiosity got me to check on nutrient  value of sweets vs. yams only to find that what I had thought were yams were only the orange version of seet taters

btw - sweets (orange or white) win out nutriant - wise 2 / 1

I knew they were not the same. A lot of pubs sell sweet potato fries. They are not bad, but I prefer wings or nachos when we go out.

A lot of bars mislabel them yam fries. Either name, they are good

They do grow on you. I see more pubs we go to have them on their menus. At first I thought they were a mismatch for draft lager. Don't get me wrong, I prefer wings in a sports bar. But when they do not have 25 cent wings or nachos, they are a good substitute.

It takes less space on a menu.
