Do you have music in your collection that you pray to God no one catches you listening to. :laugh3:
Many of these are gems that I discovered in my parents record collection as a kid and they have stuck with me ever since.

When this single was released in 1965, alot of people thought it was the Beatles. John Lennon was quoted as saying Lies "was the best song we never recorded".
In reality the Knickerbockers were a band formed by two brothers out of Bergenfield New Jersey. :laugh3: Give a listen....this little tune kicks ass. The video is priceless as well. :laugh3:

I'm fond of it as well, although it was recorded and released well before my time.
I find it interesting that the recorded studio version actually features members of the "wrecking crew" who went on to become Phil Specter's famed "Wall of Sound". In fact I believe guitar on that track is being played by Glenn Campbell.

It was a huge hit among "vanilla pop" audiences and has been covered by a ton of people.
Yes, it probably is Campbell. It's also Carol Kaye (my heroine) on bass. The Wrecking Crew is all over it...not surprising since they were the architects of the southern CA sound in that era. The Cascades often performed with the Beach Boys, so they had the same connections in the music scene.
I'd post a clip or two but this is your thread and I'm not gonna jack it. Your parents evidently are about my age or a couple of years younger...although my album collection is substantially different from theirs judging from these selections...nevertheless they are all comfortably familiar to me.

This is not exclusively my thread....... so post away. I look forward to seeing what you have.
As for my parents album collection, it is huge and wildly varied. So dont judge it by what you see here. :laugh3:
In their collection you'll find everything from The Beatles to Benny Goodman to the Crazy World of Arther Brown to Bach's Concerto in D Minor. There is no rhyme or reason to it, just an eclectic love of music. Over the years they've spent a small fortune in records and CDs and the equipment to play them.
As a kid I would spend hours digging through there record collection. These selections are just some of the stuff that appealed to my taste as an 11 or 12 year old and I guess I never really out grew it. In fact I have an IPod full of stuff like this that I keep in my truck and listen to when I'm alone.

LOL.. yeah, when I was but a child growing up, I could listen to the radio in my room. AM radio was all I could get.. FM radio was always pretty staticy and mostly useless. Ahh, the good old days. I used to go to a nearby radio station and hang out, watching the DJ play records thru a big plate-glass window. WSPD in Toledo, I think it was.

I guessing it was a transistor radio. :laugh3:
My dad had and may still have one in laying around the garage. I remember he used to have it on when he would be working on one of the classic junkers he would pick up now and then. It was a big square thing with a big tuner knob and extendable chrome antenna AND a removable brown leather cover. :smiley_thumbs_up_yellow_ani:
As a kid I didn't think much of it....it was just a radio. But when I look back and compare it to what we have today. It was barely one step above 2 Dixie cups and a string. :laugh3:

No difference. Hell I was buying beer at 17. Even had a cop let me and a friend go and keep our beer, on a superbowl weekend. Most of my crowd worked at grocery stores and we could get all the beer and wine we wanted.

I was lucky.....when I was underage. I never had to buy my beer.
Perks of having boobs bigger than my head, I guess. :laugh3:
Besides I grew up in one of the states where you can't buy beer or alcohol in a grocery store. You have to get it from a licensed seller and they are not allowed by law to employ underage kids. So we always had to get someone over 21 or someone with a believable fake ID to buy it for us.

Nothing, really.
In Canada, an adult is considered an adult at age 18, for all intents and purposes. Same in the US. Can serve in war, will be sentenced as adult in law, etc.
Yet cannot buy a drink? Well, in some Provinces here, it's still 18 (the Federal minimum), the rest it's 19. So, it's not that bad here, but still some Provinces have decided to add one year to the Federal minimum age.
It really doesn't make any sense, and how this could ever pass law is beyond me.

There are a lot of versions of that song out there and many are recorded by Conway himself. They are all a little bit differently nuanced but that one is pretty good. I have the original 1959 version on an old Ipod somewhere.
Glenn Campbell did a good one back in I think 69-70 as well and believe it or not, Jon Bon Jovi did a decent live rendition in the late 90s.

We both have always loved male singers with strong male voice who know how to build up to a crescendo and have the range to pull it off with exceptionally high notes for a male at the finish. Conway was in that select group and possibly the starter of it all. Van Dyke also comes to mind
Orbison prolly was the ultimate at that .. solid male voice slowly building it up for the kill ending by taking it into higher frequencies than many females can go
This one melts me / takes into lalaland in those high frequency moments no matter how many times I hear it .. He goes places males are not supposed to go
This was from that special night when 6 top stars set up a freebee tribute, accompanying him in a very small dinner club setting "Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night" in the last year of his life (you will see several of them in the background in this one .. notice KD as one of his doo wap girls just before he picked up on her and helped take her to the top )
(Yes, we have the DVD of the entire special night)

In this one just weeks before he died, class act that he was, he allowed KD to share the magic parts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uNoAp7RNUA
KD was also helped by Cohen after Roy died and she is astounding magic on his "Hallelujah" (another of those build up to high frequency crescendo pieces of music)

I've seen The Black and White Night concert. In fact I remember seeing it when it was originally broadcast on HBO. I was probably about 14 and a freshman in HS at the the time. That room had a lot of talent packed into it; The Boss, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, and beside K.D. Lang the backup singers included Jackson Brown, J.D. Souther, Bonnie Raitt and I believe Jennifer Warrens. If memory serves I think T Bone Burnnet was in there someplace as well.
Roy Orbison had an amazing voice. He had a 4 octave range and a glass shattering falsetto.
Quote
and I believe Jennifer Warrens. If memory serves I think T Bone Burnnet was in there someplace as well.
Yes, they both were there also were.
He often shared Jennifer with Lenny Cohen and KD did Hallelujah solo for him
C'ept when he could get Sharron Robinson on board .. One could feel the raw sexual energy between those 2 .. magic
Speaking of "Crying", I've always loved this version by Don McLean. My dad took me to see Don McLean and the Jordanaires at Carnegie Hall when I was around 11 years old. My mom was supposed to go but she came down with the flu so dad took me. I remember it being the day before Thanksgiving and at the time I was kind of bored by it all but when I hear the old recordings of that Christmas concert, I realize now how good it really was.

I don't speak either language..
Although I did learn a few words of Russian when I lived in Kazakhstan.
There is no need to understand the language.
Lots of people listen to Andrea Bocelli without understanding a single word he says. ac_biggrin
I like to sing along to lyrics.
