I know right to work laws scare the hell out of big labour. Union membership should be optional. Forcing people to pay dues to an organization they may not support is antithetical to democracy.

I`m a union member and very happy with that..
I like my benefits and working conditions..
It is a big help to me when my family needs me.

I'm not a union fan..absolutely there are pros and cons being in a unionized environment but for me the cons outweighs the pros, so for that reason I'm out !   ;)

That's OK Fashonista, but do you think others should be forced "to pay dues to an organization they may not support". Isn't that "antithetical to democracy." as some wise person said

				Quote from: "cc li tarte"
If it's forced then no, that isn't right cc..
I would choose my union, but people should have the right to reject it as well.

				Our union-activity is more organized.
Member or not, the worker has to be paid atleast the min. salary that is pointed in the national work contract of that profession. If the contract is broken, there will be a strike if things go bad enough.
All unions are members of the "Finlands work-union central" (translated into something like that ;)).

What I think you are saying Odie is that union membership is optional, but the terms of a union contract are not? If that is the case then why would they need unions at all?
I heard labour markets are quite rigid in Scandinavia? Swedes in particular are one the most unhealthy peoples in the world. Far more likely to call in sick than Canadians. Also, very difficult to get rid of lazy inept assholes in those countries. This is what I heard Odie.
Unions are watching that the regulations are being followed. Being a member has it´s benefits.
For example even if I wouldn´t be a member of a union, I would still have to strike if ordered to. My company has to follow union-regulations.
If the electric-engineers strike, I would have to go to strike too.
They are not unhealthy, they are sometimes faking it to get a free day. I for example never get sick. Many work-providers require a proof of sickness (?) from the worker nowadays... Physicians are giving those.
3x warnings and kiss your ass goodbye.
Kinda messy again.

Oh, I know they are faking it Odie. Sweden is one of the more healthy nations on the planet and so many workers are sick at any given time?? Something stinks there that is for sure.
That is good that employers are demanding proof of illness. Do you mean that three times without proof of illness and a worker is fired?
Trust me, they do not do so lightly. The workers control the union, as long as they are happy, everybody is happy. There are chosen foremen that inform the union-leaders about the unhappiness of the workers.
Strikes have to be just and they have to be validated by court.
Nearly every1 belongs to a union since it benefits us.
We do not want the wallmart-model where workers are being treated like slaves.
Wow, even we list on the "7 the most healthiest people on the planet"-list. lol
The 3 warnings apply to everything. Schedules not met too many times = warning, caught faking it = warning, caught stealing shit = warning etc. It all depends on how severe the indiscretion is.
Drinking too much at the christmas party and punching the boss will get you fired. ;)

Unions are big business in North America. They are corrupt and political to their very core. They pay lip service to worker happiness, but it is all about the corrupt fatcats at the top of the organization. Some unions are pretty good, but in unskilled laobur positions they do little to improve wages.
Walmart is not a good example as any retard can work there and in my city it often is handicapped people working at them. If you are skilled here your wages and benefits are really good.
Unskilled get snuffed in the interviews. You have to have recommendations+good grades to get a job. Good grades and energetic personality are enough too.
Retards/low-wits are being utilized at some level. They can lift boxes and such. ;)
Our unions are not political since they cannot be controlled by a handful of men. Decisions need to be agreed by the members. Political-parties are not in control.
Unions however invest in certain businesses.

Explain what makes Scandinavian products superior? A lot of my friends love Ikea, but I don't like most of their ugly looking crap.
We have a habit of building our stuff sturdy. Like our houses.
Volvo is like a tank but still ekological.
Our food is more pure. We have purer air and cattle is not laced with growth-hormones.
Ikea is americanized crap-shop.

1) Our houses are built to withstand our long brutal winters. Yes there have been cases of condo buildings or subdivisions contructed poorly, but they are the exception.
2) Volvo car divison is Chinese owned now and it was owned by Ford before that. Heavy trucks and construction equipment are still Swedish though I believe.
3) You can buy less processed food here, but it is more expensive. Our cattle are loaded with growth hormones though, but Alberta beef is still condidered the best in the world.
4) What type of big box retailers do you have in Scandinavia?
1) Sure, canadians live in the same climate.
2) Volvo is a certain type of quality and the owner does not change that... If they do, volvo ceases to be volvo.
3) Full organic food is in a different category here too, more expensive. Never heard of Alberta beef. Moose beef is pretty organic.
4) Kesko and Arina are big corporations which own near all of our supermarkets. KKK-supermarket, citymarket, prisma, those are the biggest here. Selling mainly made in finland goods. Electronics are either german, finnish or swedish for the most part.
KKK does not mean Ku Klux Klan here. ;)
I don´t recall seeing any canadian products.

Odie, I buy organic elk meat from a farmer just outside my city. There are lots of people that hunt deer, elk and moose though. Alberta beef is famous for it's marbling.
What makes more expensive European electronics better than Asian ones?
Lots of consumer products made in Canada. Everything from camping equipment to furniture to clothing. Most stuff in our stores are made in China though.
Sure you do. Can´t have nice smooth legs without good food. ;)
Makita is actually good. Sony, samsung also good.
German domestic machines and work-tools last forever.
Yea, I buy american clothing because southern european sizes are too small for me.

There's a book by an Oxford educated, Zambian born economist called Dead Aid. She covers why aid money to African countries is keeping Africa underdeveloped. She has harsh words for people like Bono form U2 as well.
I know that we are not there to help like the media suggests. You would think that all the money we have poured there would have created more than a few wells.
Must be golden wells laced with diamonds.
The fact is that we are spending money on some people we have never even seen. Hundreds of millions are being spent on immigrants in Helsinki alone.
Our government owned pension-organization just invested 290million on some israeli colony-company.
Makes no sense.

Probably.
Some kind of shady israeli company which is involved with colonization of palestine. I don´t understand how it benefits us... Israelis mean nothing to us.

If foreign aid was effective it would have produced green shoots by now. Instead it ends up in the hands of corrupt, bloodthirsty warlords.
The situation in africa is far worse than media shows. U.N. convoys are being raided. Supplies stolen.
There were many white armoured vehicles destroyed in the ditches.
75% of red cross income stays within the organization. These foundations are a billion dollar business. Not helping just making money.
It would be cheaper to send combat-troops to annihilate the warlords and their armies.

You'll lose that one too P ZEE... no one in there right mind would argue Unionization doesn't translate to Higher Wages, better benefits and better working conditions in 99% of cases....and if Union wages weren't as high as they are, the few non-union outfits you alluded too would not be paying as much as they are.
Some companies will pay more wages than Union shops to keep the Union out...once again fair Union collectively bargained wages are helping to drive up the cost of wages in Non Union positions to try and keep wages at least on par with inflation...Unions doing their part for all of us.

They spent 4 years becoming a journeyman in their trades. The Canadian economy needs more of em. An advanced economy like ours needs more unskilled labourers like we need more -25 days in the winter.
Maybe I should move to Canada. Our pay-grade... In a word, it sucks.
I´ve heard of finnish people making huge salaries in northern-america.

That's what I was curious about Odie? I am a petroleum industry and I know people that have done short term work in Norway. They said the wages were very good, but with the taxation and ridiculously high prices it wasn't worth it.
10bucks for coffee was too much? Many of us work in Norway and send money to Finland.
In Norway even the errand-boy makes 3000e/month.

Ok, 3000 Euro/month. Is that after tax? We have labourers in the Alberta oilpatch grossing over $7000/month. The work is largely seasonal though.
Yea, I mean the dog-walking errand-boy.
7000/month!? We have wayyyy lower pay-grades. This country is a hell-hole.

Yes. How much does a carton of milk cost for example? Just trying to figure out the price-grade.

Oh jeesh, another thing Fashionista knows better than myself. She is an expert on home economics while I don't really price compare for groceries. Are your cartons of milk one litre? If you mean one litre I think it is about $2/CDN. Two litre about $3.75 I think. We also have 4 litre plastic jugs which we don't buy, but I'm sure Fash does.
Yea, your groceries are a bit pricier.
What are the benefits on top of that 16k/month pay?

I have been in a few unions, and I have to say I hate them all.
The more you pay to be in one the less your represented, and the more someone up top is making off your labor.
The worst thing is they usually pander to a sorry politician that isn't even a good one, and use your union dues, should be illegal.

I understand why it's done, but I still think it should be illegal since many of the members have no choice but to pay dues if they want to work that job.
Yeah I could get another job someplace, but shouldn't have to do so.

I hope my senator has the people that will stop a lot of it, people should have a choice.
The Union I was with last seemed to be more for the company anyhow, they gave away so much when they didn't have to do so, and the other company in our state was giving more, and none union.

I know, but the Unions run the government since the employees are in the union like it or not.
They are the first or second most influential lobbies bribing officials.
Hey gotta go, take care. :)

When I move to Canada, I will not join to any union there.

Hello Odinson, I gave my husband a call about electrician salaries..
He says that a Red Seal electrician can expect a base hourly wage of between $35 and $50 per hour worked not including overtime..
Industrial pays better than residential..
The unionized rates have a gross hourly pay of about $57 per hour worked..
This is the IBEW website for Alberta.
http://ibew424.net/
If you have any questions I would be happy to ask my husband for you..
Good luck in your search Odinson.

I did not know you have supervisory experience..
Your wages would be $45-60 per hour base rate plus a company truck..
In IBEW your totel gross pay would be close to $70 per hour..
You would work an 8 hour day with the option of overtime after that and depending on circumstances it could double wage or 150%..
My husband is also a supervisor and he said he would have little trouble making $200 per year in IBEW and that's without killing himself with overtime hours..
Without overtime and just working in a shop you would make over $80,000 per annum at one of the lower paying jobs..
Most electricians make much more than that though.

A lot of people from other provinces in Canada have moved to Alberta to take advantage of the resource boom. As the demand for housing went up so did prices including a few years ago bidding wars. My house in Edmonton is 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath with 2.5 car attached garage on a large lot in a new subdivison. It is worth about $475k right now I estimate. My condo in Fort Mac is 2 bed/2 bath with one surface and one heated underground parking stall. We paid $350k for it.
Hmm interesting.

Yes, it is held through the colleges in Canada and one can earn a license for building operator to first class operator.
It was just in the countryside that killing female babies happened, but obviously they did not kill them all or there would no females after 1979. A lot of that is Western exaggeration.
Are you close to your parents if you don´t mind me asking?
We call them female-dudes. ;) I know this one chick who speaks and acts like a man but still isn´t a lesbian. "I´m going to take a dump" etc. and she even sits like a man with her crotch open and elbows on her knees.

That is good.
I´m used to a female like you. ;)

doesnt seem to matter what asian females do...gardening, dishes, forking pig shit...they always look feminine...maybe its the lack of sweat pants and 80 extra pounds that do it.....but i suspect it is a deeper characteristic
I´m used to a female like you. ;)
I find white women cannot do non-traditional things and be feminine. Every white female engineer I have met is either a dyke or looks like one. Asian women engineers are still very feminine.

My friends bigbrother blasted this one guys head off with a shotgun for saying bad things about his woman.
Little bit extreme.
We are so calm and nice people.
An african-american man got beaten to twilight-zone because he padded this one finnish-guys back. He went on a rant on facebook.
My advice is that do not touch the males here unless they signal friendship first.
And the fact that we made the red army fear coming here. "slaughter house" "the white death".
You are a lying little squeeky indian.
Nuff said, you goddamn shithead.

I wish I could talk Fash into creating a subforum for EU, Gary, instigator and Kala. It would be a safe, monitored environment where they would be free to hit each other over the head as much as they want with foam hammers. It would keep their kindergarten antics off the board so the adults can talk. Like a cyber version of a kiddie table.

I ain´t gonna lose this house because it is like a golden nuggett.

Well, in the land of rivers and lakes, many properties have a nice lake or river view.
