It's only a trial..
I am also thinking of trying guest posting again..
Good idea, yay or nay?

Nay to both. Guest posting is an invitation for assholery and a lot of work for me.
Er...guys...
Isn't this a discussion you should be having BEFORE springing surprises on mods and members?
Work TOGETHER.

Would that not keep robots / search engines from reading it?

Normally yes, but I do not want this board being used as posting material on another board..
This is only a trial Oberon.
I understand.
But let me be perfectly honest.
You are loved and respected by all, as you well know.
However, you seem to be either unable or unwilling to engage your team in dialogue as to how the forum should be managed. It should come as no news to you that this has cost you the loss of mods in the past, and is the basis for why you had to move.
May I strongly recommend that you adopt a participatory approach to forum management by engaging with your crew BEFORE swerving or implementing changes. Work with them/he/she as a TEAM.
We all know its your forum, Fash. But even major corporations understand the value of teamwork in improving overall efficiency and enhancing morale.

She is not a dictator and usually does let me know in advance of changes. She didn't tell me about this change until after it was made which is why I started this thread.

I'm not sure Azhya..
I hope he's alright.
I declare that I like it, not being able to read unless you log in. I like it very much. I want Fash to know that but I'm not implying I want my preference imposed on all. I just like it, that's all.

Thank you Azhya, I want everyone to give their opinion.

I like it too.
It doesn't matter to me if I have to login to read the board.
Hiding the board unless logged in is a terrible way to attract anyone new... At least with content available to the public, a new poster may register (slim chance), but it does happen.
Guest posting? I used to like Snitz DV just for that, but not so sure it would work here, with the currently limited number of active posters. Herman is probably correct, in that it would more than likely create more work than potential traffic...

I doubt I will go ahead with guest posting..
And logging in to read is temporary.
I guess this stops outsiders from snooping, but like Mel says, its unlikely to attract many new posters.
Again, Would not readable unless logged in not keep robots / search engines from reading it?
And prospective members? No one will join a forum they have not examined / assessed .. or even know about let alone find if they were looking

It would force people that have registered that lurk to login. If they login, they are more likely to post.
There's pros and cons to both sides of the argument... I think the board is better open though rather than closed off, but its not my call.

A few people logged in since I did this that have not been here in a long time, so the results are not bad..
But, it's too early to tell yet if it's working..
I am waiting to hear from one other person who's opinions I value before deciding if I will end this sooner rather than later.

You should disable the ability for people to hide their online status, its completely pointless, and would expose all the nosy fuckers.

I can see everybody here, so I forget that that option is even available..
I have never had anyone ask for hidden status to be removed before.
Its just a pet peeve of mine. ac_biggrin

That's fine, but I don't think it's a good idea to take the hidden online status option away from posters..
I think most posters that login would like to keep that option even if they choose not to use it.

A guest forum.

A guest forum.
Two or three childish assholes from VF are the reason it was shut down. They spammed it to death with gross images.
I don't mind the requirement to login in order to read most of the forum. I actually think guest posting should be allowed periodically, but I can see that it would be a hassle to maintain based on past instances.
cc, I think most modern bots and spiders are programed to register on sites that don't have obstacles like captcha or required logic questions to discourage bots.

You still get some even with captcha.

Each version of captcha I've seen uses a finite set of results that can be noted and compiled in a database, so anything that isn't randomly generated won't work 100% of the time.

If I login, I am more likely to post.

I won't be doing that until I personally have the time that will be required to keep an eye on it for juvenile delinquents..
That won't happen until late fall..
If I do it now, it would fall on Herman to babysit it and that's expecting too much of a mod.
