Hello Pinay, some of my girlfriends would be offended by this ad..

I am well aware of blatant discrimination against less attractive people in Asia..

On the surface it would seem women are the usual targets of beauty discrimination, but men face it too though not as much as we do.

South Korea's official human rights watchdog urged Korean Air Lines Co. on Wednesday to stop banning male job seekers from applying for flight attendant positions, saying the policy violates a law banning sex discrimination.

However, Korean Air said it has no intention of abiding by the watchdog's advice because it "seriously" violates an individual company's rights to formulate its own hiring system.

The state-run National Human Rights Commission said the country's largest airline has not recruited new male cabin crew since 1997. It said Korean Air has been filling male crew positions from those working at other in-house divisions.

The commission's advice is not legally binding, but investigator Na Sang-won said that if Korean Air does not comply, the watchdog may ask the Labor Ministry to take punitive action.

Korea's law on equal opportunity in employment carries a maximum penalty of a 5 million won ($3,810) fine.  [Associated Press]

Four in ten say they have suffered discrimination in hiring on the basis of their looks, which cost them either job opportunities or caused them to receive lower salaries, a survey has found.

The jobs website Career announced on the 29th the results of its survey of 583 jobseekers, finding that that 42.4% believe they have been the victims of discrimination based on their appearances and have lost job and salary opportunities that way.

Of those lost opportunities, 53.4% were "absolutely never being hired", 35.6% were "being evaluated by my appearance more than my education, grades, or talents", and 25.5% were "being discrimincated against compared to other applicants".

20.6% said "I have been told rude statements about my appearance" and 16.2% said "I have been asked questions related tomy appearance".

55.9% said that they had "just put up with it".

However, 31.2% said they "didn't join the company despite beign accepted", 7.3% "lost weight or had plastic surgery", and 4% "complained strongly".

85.2% of all respondents said that one's appearance affects one's job search.

49.5% believed it had a "significant" influence while 29.4% said it was "very significant", a total of 78.9%. 20.1% said it was neither significant nor insignificant, 1% said it was of "low significance", and none said it was "very insignificant".

I think you prolly posted this for fun, but this is reality in Asia. I have literally seen hundreds of job postings similar to this one. Ugly people will need some pretty in-demand skills to get hired in Asia. Appearance counts now get over it.

true dat.....its the way god meant it to be.....i fail to see anything wrong with the posting...i think in korea they are finished at age 30..at least it was like that......there are some very friendly 30 year old attendants on KA....

Hello cuddle pal, are they really finished at 30?

Appearance is very important in Taiwan too, but I think 30 is a bit young..

Some of my girlfriends in Calgary are speechless when they see an ad like this one.

Asiana doesn't seem as discriminatory as KAL, but it is still there.

Has anyone ever seen seen a 55 year old flight attendant anywhere in East Asia? It would seem that occupation has a short shelf life.

Flight Attendant doesn't seem to be a very good job in Canada. Only perk is the travel. I could be wrong of course and if anyone knows anyone doing that job in Canada please let us know what it is really like.

it's not really a very pleasant, satisfying job.....entry level about 30-35K...go here go there,  do this do that...eat lots of shit. However, i was told that for the AC senior ones (they get all the long haul jobs) if the flight is longer than 10.5 hours they only have to do three of those a month plus one short haul domestic flight to get in enough hours...so they liked that. But overall i have yet to find one that has been in 5 years or longer that doesn't piss and moan all night long.......not sure how steady domestic flights stack up

The way you described it Odie it seems the pressure is on men to be attractive in your country. That is the impression you have given anyway.

It´s not really stressing since many of us are "heavy-duty" by default. :)

I remember my post. I made it because I hear that many of the ugly women still have high standards.

Unrealistic expectations. They don't see themselves in the same way that others do. I hate to say it, but some white women are so full of themselves.

Yea. They are really possessive of men too. Date a whitewoman and phonelines will crash when you are away.  :D

Just to change course, do you know if flight attendant is a good job in Europe?

I hear it pays good and there are a lot of benefits.

What I´ve noticed that the women are usually hot and young so I guess they do discriminate.

It's a shame looks can determine social status, and getting a job, especially when the pretty person is not even qualified.

It happens here also, not just the Philippines.

Worse is where race is a factor in with it, that's like a double wrong be it straight out racism, or the stupid liberal reverse racism affirmative action.

I have been denied a job several times because I wasn't black, and specifically a black woman.

I put in for a State Police job, and had very high scores, and was sure to get it, but an order kept me from getting it because quotas so people that was not up to standards got the job.

Me, and a few others overheard the personal office talking, and we was brushed away very quickly when we was seen.

Other times it happened also, all because the racist policy of affirmative action.

For the beauty part It's not uncommon, and seen all the time.

No asian-male can pull that off.

Gotta have some hair.

I have to Odie, I agree with seoulbro. A man's race means absolutely nothing to me. There are hawt guys in all races. I never had an East Asian boyfriend, but that is because they never fancied me and not vice versa.

That´s weird.

I could act in an asian movie.

"Kim jongs concubines" starring Odinson as mr. Kim Jong. :D

"Jade-emperors court" starring Odinson as his holiness.

"The monkeyking" starring guess who.

Sure, there are hot men in all races.

You always wanted to be an actor right Odie? Well at least a porn star.

There are perks in that job but the pay seems to be low.

I played Victor Creed in a halloween party. My woman was little red riding hood since Victor Creed is like a wolfman and blonde.

Torned jacket, jeans and a scruffy hair.

That's true seoulbro. East Asian women are attracted to East Asian men.

People usually are attracted to their own people.

Wolverine is a caucasian, though. ;)

Absolutely and that is perfectly normal. When I was a little girl I dreamed I would marry an Asian man someday, preferably Chinese. It didn't work out that way for me, but that is what wanted as an adolescent.

Yes, the prince charming is a vast majority of the time a person whom shares the same culture and characteristics.

It is this kind of racism in the Western media that keeps Asian men down. In a recent sex/dating survey for a local weekly metro newspaper (although it says MARRIED, I'm sure it'd be the same results if it asked "if you DATED outsside your race, which would you prefer").

Quote:

If you married outside your race, which would you prefer? (female responses) mixed: 40.3 percent Caucasian: 16.2 percent Mediterranean: 11.9 percent Asian: 9.7 percent African origin: 8 percent (male responses) Asian: 29.8 percent mixed: 28.3 percent Latin American: 14 percent Caucasian: 12.7 percent Mediterranean: 8.4 percent.

Only Africans finished lower in the survey of women. Asian women were the favourite of men. Don't anyone tell me the Western media does not deliberately try to desexualize Asian men. Asian men like instigator should be congratulated in their efforts to promote the Alph* Asian male brand.

You are talking about racial quotas. In Asia, ads like the one Pinay posted are common while in North America it is illegal except for a few jobs.

Yes that's what I was speaking of partly, but we still have that, there has been cases where usually it's flight attendants, and waitresses.

Ads specific for flight attendants in the United States Blue? That is amazing.

I don't know about the adds, but some specifics are included in them.

I have seen cases that went to court over discriminating for looks, and usually it's for that job.

Hooters has been in courts for it even, but I can understand since the looks is what sells the place.

I knew they only hired pretty women, but I am surprised about airlines..

I have seen many older women working as flight attendants for Air Canada.

Last discrimination suit I saw was because a fat woman wasn't hired by the airline, but I have seen where just the cases of sexual harassment after being hired.

That ad that Pinay posted would be illegal in Canada.

I wonder if it would for some jobs, or if the people would just make an excuse not to hire someone.

Here thats what they do a lot of times, and just say over qualified, or the possession is full.

That's what I think Blue..

An airline would not have an ad that explicit in Canada, but that does not mean no discrimination though.

I'm sure, shame really since better people are available they turn down.

I can see not wanting a 300 lb woman or man as a flight attendant for obvious reasons, but just someone with a bad tooth, or small breast is a shame.

Yes, that is true. My husband is an electrician and he says there is some hesitance to hire older workers in his company..

They won't fire an older worker, but they prefer not to hire a displaced older worker though..

That goes on a lot here in most the places I worked, and it makes me really angry .

Like Ford they hire some older people, but rather hire these kids that wont come to work, always sick to get out of work, and cry so much over nothing.

The older ones have expereance, and usually come to work because the know they need the money, and have more integrity the younger ones usually don't have.

That is what my husband has told me Blue..

Older workers are more reliable, but the work is a little bit physical..

They think older workers will have health problems and become a burden on the company.

It is not fair.

I saw more younger workers being the burden, and I was in a hard fast paced job.

I was a team leader over 24 people, and over 400 in my department, the younger ones was always the issue.

I had a little say on new people, but not much.

Yes, indeed younger workers all too often are Frosty. You talk to any employer and you ask them which employees, older or younger are they having discipline problems with. Probably 98% will say young employees.

Safety is another matter entirely. Brand new employees no matter what age and older workers are the ones getting hurt. Complacency sets in after a worker has spent many years on the job.

My husband's company has some good incentives for working safely..

It seems silly because who would want to get hurt..

They offer incentives that get better the longer goes without getting injured.
