Brian Williams criticized for calling missile-launch photos 'beautiful'

NEW YORK (AP) — Brian Williams is facing online criticism for waxing poetic about what he called "beautiful pictures" of U.S. missiles launching during an attack on a Syrian air base.

Video released by the military shows Tomahawk missiles targeted for a Syrian airfield launching from the decks of U.S. warships in the Mediterranean Sea on Thursday.

During his MSNBC program, The 11th Hour, late Thursday night, Williams said the "beautiful pictures at night" tempted him to quote a line from a Leonard Cohen song: "I am guided by the beauty of our weapons." He went on to call the images "beautiful pictures of fearsome armaments."

Williams was quickly mocked and criticized on Twitter for the remarks, with some users suggesting they were insensitive to the realities of war.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I think it's ok to be drawn by the beauty of these military cruise missiles, tanks, ships, fighter jets, carriers, etc, but just remember no matter how beautiful, in the end they're just all used for the same purpose, killing.  That's what my brother always tells me when I was a kid.  :001_tongue:

There are people that find firearms beautiful, so being drawn to other military hardware doesn't surprise me.

...i suppose the beauty of war depends whether a person is it's recipient or the person who inflicts it upon others. Oh well.

You know who else can't stay away from controversy?  The guy who gave the nod to launch those missiles without congressional approval:

Congressional approval?

Lessee...did Clinton seek congressional approval to whack Libya? Or Serbia, for that matter.

Did Kennedy or Johnson have Congessional approval?

How about Nicaragua? Bay Of Pigs?

Trump, it seems, is in good company.

Yes, that's a weak excuse.

Trump, it seems, is in good company.

The War Powers Resolution was passed by Congress in 1973 in an attempt to constrain a president's war-making capabilities after the undeclared conflicts in Vietnam and Korea.

Trump dumped something like 59 missiles on one airbase.  Missiles that cost over a million dollars each without a nod from Congress.  In terms of excuses, wtf is his?

Too Many of Trump's Liberal Critics Are Praising His Strike on Syria

https://www.thenation.com/article/too-many-of-trumps-liberal-critics-are-praising-his-strike-on-syria/

It shouldn't be surprising, but it is to me nonetheless: Plenty of liberals who've long criticized Donald Trump as unfit to be president are praising his strike on Syrian airfields.

On CNN's New Day Thursday, global analyst Fareed Zakaria declared, "I think Donald Trump became president of the United States" last night. To his credit, Zakaria has previously called Trump a "bullshit artist" and said, "He has gotten the presidency by bullshitting." But Zakaria apparently thinks firing missiles make one presidential. On MSNBC, Nicholas Kristof, an aggressive Trump critic, said he "did the right thing" by bombing Syria. Anchor Brian Williams, whose 11th Hour has regularly been critical of Trump, repeatedly called the missiles "beautiful," to a noisy backlash on Twitter.

While The New York Times posted several skeptical, even critical stories, it gave us this piece of propaganda: an article initially titled "On Syria attack, Trump's heart came first," buying the president's line that his opposition to anti-Assad military action was reversed by seeing the heartrending photos of children struggling to breathe after a chemical attack.
