Red dirt is a genre of alt-country that comes out of Oklahoma and Texas. Although some purists would claim that Oklahoma red dirt and Texas red dirt are totally separate sounds, I'm not sure most people can tell the difference. As I see it, the Oklahoma stuff has less of a Mexican influence in it and is more like southern rock while the Texas version is more western and makes use of accordion, Spanish guitar and Spanish brass. The genre itself covers a lot of ground and has become a catch all for country/southern rock that doesn't fit the traditional Nashville mold.
Critics say that Red Dirt can be compared to the indie rock 'n' roll as there is no definitive sound that can be attributed to all the bands in the movement. Most Red Dirt artists would be classified by the music industry as Americana, folk, or alt-county. It has been described as a mix of folk, rock, country, bluegrass, blues, Western swing, and honky tonk, with even a few Mexican influences.
Speaking of Mexican influence....here's a great live performance by Tom Russell....
