Title: the language thread
Post by: Anonymous on May 12, 2017, 12:56:58 PM
Blazor and cc gave me an idea that a language thread might be fun..

On this little board, there are many languages spoken..

English is my third language after Taiwanese and Mandarin..

I also speak a little Japanese and Dutch..

Zetsu speaks Cantonese..

Seoul's first language is Korean..

Iron horse jockey is fluent in Spanish..

Blurt is not here often, but his mother tongue is French..

We give words or phrases in languages other than English or answer questions about languages other than English.

German is technically my first language, but once I entered Kindergarten, English had taken over completely.

An odd thing happens when this is the case, at least with me...

You never forget the language, but speaking and writing it goes out the window.  I can barely speak simple words any more, and cannot write much.

However, you never forget listening to the language.  I can, to this day, understand most of a simplistic conversation in German, even though it is difficult for me to formulate a reply.  It can actually become frustrating at times.

What I do know, from learning two languages from very young on, is that there are often times no exact "equivalent" for some terms...  It's hard to explain, but an English 'meaning' of a term may be close, but it's often not quite right, and it can never be.

I speak some Ukrainian. From working abroad for many years, I learned a few phrases in Arabic and Spanish.  I even picked up a little of the old lady's native language.

I know a little Latin from high school. I took 2.5 years of it, but I rarely have an opportunity to use it outside of the internet.

Even with English, there are many differences.  As an example:

Auzzie Bricktop:  Crikey Mate, I shat me trousers again!

Canadian Bricktop:  Damn, I shit my pants again!
