Personally, I believe both Australia and Canada are two of the greatest countries in the world. Ever. We have been allies since our beginnings, and the sun never sets upon our Commonwealth.

Having lived in other countries and in many different parts of Canada I find Canadians are in general an unlikeable smug lot, smug with no reason at all to be smug ... thinking their country is better than other countries when in fact it is a dull country. It is a very long way from a favorite and most certainly not an interesting country for me.

I've been racking my brain, trying to find even one thing that Canada excels at globally, and I pretty much came up empty...



However, there is one thing...  The ability to convert Metric to Imperial measurements, and back.



Since we generally use Imperial measurements for many things, but are mandated at a Federal level to use Metric, many have become good at calculating without the use of a calculator.

The year we lived in Kazakhstan, they let us use a big beautiful house to live in for the contract..



I didn't work for that year, so I was bored, but the hardest part was the loneliness..



I didn't like being away from my parents and friends back in Calgary..



I couldn't wait to get home to a smaller house.

Spent many a week on different occasions in India when the mercury reached up to the low 50's. In the shade.



People would stay in their cars because that was the only place they had air conditioning. But not me. I was on an urban walkabout while everyone else stalled.

Our weather ranges from tropical to desert.



Darwin has 2 seasons, wet and dry...further south we have the standard four seasons...mid 40's in summer.



It gets to 50 in remote desert places, but that is rare.

The lad was undertaking a recovery session from his football game on the weekend, which requires them to walk and stand in the water to ease out muscle spasm. The water at this time of the year is COLD, and had the overall affect of numbing his ankles.



Sea fleas are an important part of the eco system, in that they feed from water borne carrion. The unfortunate lad hit a perfect storm...numbed by the cold, and standing near a swarm. The "bite" is so small as to largely go unnoticed, but swarms are large.



He'll make a full recovery.

He didn't take a glance and notice blood on his feet and lower legs? I find it hard to believe he didn't notice before it got that bad.

It looks a lot worse in the picture because the bleeding has mingled with the water to make it look like a massive attack...when it was wiped clean and bandaged, he just had a lot of small pricks.

Ya. I couldn't watch the kid one ... having lived in Florida where I learned how fast gators can accelerate from a dead stop. I'm suspect crocks are at least equally as fast



In fact, saw an old flick of a fast horse vs gator .. standing start for 50 feet. Guess who got to the 50 ft mark first.

Crocs are a lot more aggressive than gators. Usually they are.

Mostly gators in Florida but there are some salt , or rather brackish, water crocks  on the East Coast and they are bad news for anyone near them



Some of the picnicking we did in Florida parks makes me shiver now that I know how fast gators are off the line. Later, got to see one take off from a water hole from a distance and it was scary quick on the draw. They poop out after 60 or so feet but accelerate very fast off the line

I go to Florida every winter to play golf. Alligators are ubiquitous throughout the state and they are impressive sprinters. I have yet to  see a croc in the sunshine state. And I am okay with that.

Crocs are pure evil, and Australian saltwater crocs are supreme amongst them. They grow to massive size, and the pressure of their jaws is unbelievable.



However, they are bigger and heavier than gators, with shorter legs, so out of water they are reasonable cumbersome in comparison. Not that I'd want to put it to the test...but virtually all crocodile attacks here occur in water or near the water's edge.



We also have freshwater crocodiles but they are much smaller. They nest on land, and are reasonably timid unless you stumble upon their nesting site. They can be blindingly fast.

You won't see crocks except in East Coast brackish (diluted salt) waters.

Golf rule for Florida > Do not go into pond to hit ball from edge. Most every pond has a gator and most ponds are not clear water



A Florida Cracker" friend took us out to fish for big mouth bass. I casted a lure with lots of large treble hooks on it.  I had about a beauty 5 pounder on the line .. tail-walking on top of the water like a pro to throw the hook .. friend said he saw the wash of a gator following it and said "if you want to see a small gator up close, let out some line .. I did and out of nowhere a small gator grabbed the bass and got hooked .. I was able to slowly play it in for about 1/2 hour or more after tiring it. It was about 5 ft long.



He put it on its back and and rubbed its belly and it went to sleep, laffingly telling us that the "rub a gators belly and he will fall asleep" trick is bunk ... that on their backs the blood / brain mix is thrown off and it will die unless it rights itself before passing out. The belly rub is show only. It went to sleep and of course we put it upright and back in the water long before damage was done  .. . but not before he talked me into rubbing its belly.



So I can honestly say that I caught a gator with a spinning rod & reel and light test line

But it's generally cheaper and easier to just fly to New Zealand. Sydney-Queenstown is a 3 hour flight,  which is less time than driving to the Australian ski fields from Sydney or Melbourne.  There are more and better ski options over there, though Australian resorts tend to be bigger, with gentler slopes that are better for learning.  You consistently get a lot more powder in NZ, and their ski fields are generally above the tree line.  Snowfalls in Australia can be a bit hit-and-miss.
