Read an article that the licence plate of at least one vehicle responsible for a poofter bashing came back to an unmarked police car, so it seems the cops were bashing poofters too...

Well, it was happening 20, 30 years ago, so most likely cops involved would be retired by now.
At the time the incident was originally reported, the cops swept it under the rug... probably didn't want to even touch the possibility that it may have been more widespread than they thought.
There were also multiple deaths which were believed to be homicides, but the cops wrote them off as suicides.
