You object to sexual education in schools?  If so, check out Culture Guard and Kari Simpson so you know who you are siding with.

For the record, I support the sex education show at lunch and wish more schools would engage their student base about sexual activity, sexual law, the perils of pr0n, pop culture around sex, etc.

No surprise there.

But who sets the curriculum? What exactly are the children being taught? Why are schools being used to "teach" socialisation issues? How are issues such as homosexuality and paedophilia handled? How about sado-masochism?

This is yet another example of schools being used as an indoctrination centre for leftist liberalism.

Schools are there to educate children to enable them to move on to their chosen career path. Period.

OOO!  OOO!  I know all the answers to your questions!

1. Provincial government does.

2. Depends on the age, but it ranges from inappropriate touching to anatomy and physiology using proper terminology, to sexuality, to STDs, to pornography and everything in between.

3. Because that's what schools do and have always done.  That and parents don't seem to be doing a great job of sex ed.

4. Homosexuality with the younger kids is discussed in factual terms like there are things as same sex couples/marriages.  When I set it up in my community, we did a parent piece where we encouraged parents to discuss their boundaries, morals, etc, with their kids.  Nothing is said about it being right or wrong, just that it exists.

Pedophilia is handled differently with your standard information about what constitutes inappropriate touching and who kids should talk to.  That's why they are taught these things in the first place.  In talking with convicted pedophiles, they found that they steered clear of children who have sexual knowledge including the proper names of parts and what sex is.  Why?  Because it shows these kids have adults in their lives who talk to them about sex.  That means they are more likely to a) know what the pedophile is actually doing and b) tell someone.

5. Sado-masochism would be covered if a student asked specifically about it or at the high school level.

I'm not sure why you think educating kids about their bodies, how they function, the pair bonding structure, how to avoid being abused, and fostering a dialogue between parent and child on issues of sex and sexuality is a leftist thing, but I know that ignorance breeds curiosity and I'd much rather my kids not be sexually ignorant AND know our expectations as they head into the sexual world of teenagehood.

Does the provincial government dictate curriculum at private schools in terms of learning outcomes and such?

Oh, I checked out the woman going apeshit in the article.  She's got a fun site with such attention grabbing article titles like:

Is Your Child Being Manufactured Into a Sex Activist Pawn?

Media Release : Sex Activists in bed with BC Liberals?

B.C. MLAs Punked into Raising Gay Flag by Lying Sex Activist

Someone's got a serious issue with sex ed (and by the looks of it, a legal one as well.)

Oh yes, the ACE curriculum is subject to provincial rules..

The school I attended(if you can call it that) only followed the American ACE curriculum and therefore my high school diploma is not recognized by secular universities.

What?  We don't acknowledge American ACE?

I'm sorry that happened :(

It didn't meet Alberta educational curriculum at the time, so therefore my high school diploma is not worth the paper it's written on..

But, my children have real teachers and follow a curriculum acceptable for admission to any university in the province.

I'm sorry but not meeting the requirements for college/university is criminal.

Anyone that wanted to go to  university from our little school had to take the final year in a public school or enter university as a mature student.
