Break out the tequila.....Ain't we havin fun.....LOL
Looks like Hurricane Harvey is planning on making an appearance here this weekend and last into mid week next week. Supposedly hitting well south of us but then it is supposed to stay on the coast and move east maybe into Louisiana. Course that puts us in the direct path. Should be downgraded to tropical storm by the time it reaches us in Houston though. Not our first rodeo down here. Been through quite a few storms in my life. We prepare, we survive. All you can do. Hopefully we don't lose power for two weeks like we did during hurricane Ike. That was a pain. LOL

I hope you will be alright kiebers..
And everyone else in the storm's path.
Thanks Fash, I think we will be ok. Just hate losing power and having to cook everything in the freezer that is cookable on a grill...We already lost one house in Galveston to a hurricane in 2008 and we were without power in Houston for 2 weeks. But its a been there done that kinda thing. We just hunker down and hope for the best. Not much else we can do.
Oh man, so another CJ party?
I went through that somewhat a few years ago, we had a dechero (sp?) come through. No power for a week for most people, and it was 106 that week not including heat index. That sucked lol.
I was lucky to move most my food to my in-laws at the time. But did the grill thing too lol. Ever think of getting a generator for the important things like the fridge/freezer? Thats what my father in-law did. Hell he got one for his home that would power the fridge ac and tv, and one for his garage

The longest I've been without power in my condo is about 90 minutes and that was for scheduled maintenance.
I hope things don't get too wild for you kiebers.

I have thought about a generator but I would need a big one for everything and those ain't cheap. I have central air and that will take a big one to operate. Other wise I would have to buy a few window units....It was a pain the last time for 2 weeks but it is survivable. Sit in the truck with the AC on to charge phones...LOL I have had to drive to another town to get supplies but that doesn't bother me to have to do that. They are already running out of gas and groceries everywhere. I filled up yesterday. No worries.

Right on man, thats good on the supplies. Here its in the winter, and if a few flakes fall there goes all the bread and milk lol.

Don't forget Winnipeg.
Maybe it will just be a bad thunder storm where you live.
We can do Winnipeg.
It will be more than one thunderstorm....LOL It's going to sit on the coast and suck up moisture from the gulf. We are expecting 18 to 24 inches or more in my area. I have heard predictions of 50 inches in some areas closer to landfall. We have a county rain gauge less than a mile from us so I will be able see what we actually get.

That is the problem. It is supposed to hang around for a while moving slowly up the coast. It just went to a Category 4 with sustained winds of 130 mph. It hasn't made land fall yet but Corpus Christi is getting hurricane force winds now 6:30. Probably in excess of 100 mph. Not going to be good. Probably be the worst part damage wise. High winds, high storm surge doesn't make a good recipe. They are predicting it to go inland and start to lose wind speed but sit there. Then it will start moving back out over water as a tropical storm and run the coastline to Louisiana. Just sucking up all that moisture from the gulf and dumping it on the coast. All the rain will be a big issue. Flooding can take a lot of lives. Hopefully everyone prepared whether that be with supplies or evacuation.

I think that is a worst case kind of thing. I have heard 800. Not impossible but I believe unlikely. I figure in the 500 to 650 range in the worst places. But I have no idea. We have some rain bands but its not dropping much now where I am at 4 ml so far but they have gotten 50 ml. I am predicting 550-600 at my house from now until next Wednesday. We shall see. That's a lot of water to get drained out of the area. I think it took four weeks to drain the flood reservoirs in the 2016 flood.

In 2016 was just a spring storm not tropical but we got 17 inches of rain in one day. That was bad. I expect a lot more but it will be spread out over 3-5 days. From the standpoint of the flood reservoir the days won't matter. It will be worse than 2016.

Basements are not common in the southern US. There are some but not many. But if they were common I am sure many would fill up.

It is 6:45 am. just started getting some rain. Nothing major but steady rain. Had a little over an inch in the last 24 hours. So far the storm is still traveling NW and has not made a turn back to the coast. If it keeps the same track we will be safe and sound here in Houston. Too early to tell though.
So ya just gonna stay put or are ya gonna go outside and shoot the enemy?

So far we do. Don't really expect to lose power now. But never know. Storm still traveling north. Looking good for us right now. Almost 3 inches in the last 12 hours. Some places have had 6 inches. Still expecting a lot of rain all down the coast.

We lost power for about 14 hours. Have had over 14" of rain in the last 48 hours. The way it is raining now and the way the radar looks we should hit 20-24 inches by tonight. Storm is expected to sit here for another 2-3 days. We could hit 50 inches or better before its all done. But power is on so things are good for now.

Now the storm has moved back in the gulf and is gaining a little strength back. It's time for this crap to be over. Both our airports are closed until further notice. We have had 2 feet of rain since Friday at midnight. I did not take this pic but it shows how bad it was but not how bad it will get. Still a lot of water to drain down to this area.

Thank you. 100% original. Had the original tires on it from 74. I stole it on ebay. 5600 miles. Sat in a dealer showroom for 16 years as a show piece. I did replace the tires but that is it.

That is a truly awesome piece of 70's goodness.
I haven't ridden for 20 years as a made a commitment to refrain from doing so until the kids are through school, but every time I see a prime piece of machinery like that I find it hard to stay on the straight and narrow.

It's not just a hurricane thing....LOL We have flood tides every year in the Gulf of Mexico. October/November we will have a week or two of high tides that if you are low enough you get flooded. Little bastards are floating everywhere.
Flood tide just before a motorcycle rally back in the mid 2000's.

They just got rescued. Everyone safe and sound. Feeling much relief in my house. Grandma and I were worried. Tried to go back where I took the pics this morning and could not get there.
Thats good to hear on the granddaughter, been thinking about y'all. Heard it was building up again, hope everything goes ok.
Im usually on theChive, and I noticed they setup a thing where peeps on the coast could come to a certain hotel in Austin. After they set up a food fund raiser for $25k, they passed that in 15 minutes and got up to $125,000. I think they are based out of your area.
I planned 2 months ago to go camping for 4 days this coming weekend. Now its gonna rain the whole time. Im a lil bummed, but when I think of what y'all going through I feel I should be thankful that a weekend of camping is the only thing Im losing.

...as it turns out, or what I found out about Kahbuzz' hometown...
Houston, is only about 50 feet above sea level.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/harvey-why-is-houston-so-prone-to-major-flooding/
Quote
There are a lot of factors at play. For one: Houston's elevation. The city is relatively flat and is barely above sea level. Downtown is only about 50 feet above sea level, and there's only about a four-foot change between the highest and lowest parts of downtown. That means when rain falls, it has nowhere to go, and takes a long time to drain out.
Some of the southern suburbs are even lower...at 40 feet above sea level. The highest point in the city, in the northwest suburbs is only 128 feet above sea level
...is a poor choice to locate a city, especially one as large as Houston.
If they're not gonna move it, perhaps they should build an elaborate dyke system like Holland to keep the water out.
Is this possible?

That's unusually hot for us. I'm boiling. 'Specially this late in August.
Maybe we got your Texas weather and you got ours?
Whether you believe in global warming/climate change or not...somethin's happenin'.
We definitely shouldn't be in the middle of a heat wave, and you guys shouldn't be gitttin' Vancouver weather.
Oh well.
So we had an 800 year flood. Not 100 year, not 500 year, but an 800 year flood. There is no dyke system in the world that would have helped. Besides if you do some checking, we did build a flood reservoir system with dykes/dams. So tell me J0E if you were planning things back in 1837 would you have planned on 50 inches of rain falling in 5 days knowing the average rainfall is 49".
Move a city???? Really???? Move a city???? Move a city with a population of 6.5/7 million. You know, almost twice the population of British Columbia. Tell me J0E, how you gonna move a city that big.
That full head of hair must suck everything out of your brain cause you sure ain't talking with any brain power. No wonder you never have a clue....they starved to death.

Here's an article which appeared one year ago warning about the next big storm to hit Houston:
http://grist.org/climate-energy/houston-is-a-sitting-duck-for-the-next-big-hurricane-why-isnt-texas-ready/
We did not need a warning. We are all aware of this fact. Those of us on the Gulf coast have always been aware of what can and probably will happen. I would imagine this is not the first time a storm like this has hit the Texas coast in the Houston area. After all we only have semi accurate weather data for the last 250 years. That's 0.000005502972% of Earths data. Y'all have earth quakes...Why don't you move your cities somewhere where there are no earth quakes.

Well K, methinks if yer not gonna move Houston or New Orleans, y'all down South will seriously have to consider re-building those city on floating partitions. Floating Bridges, and airports too? I think they have already implemented that concept in other coastal cities or places with highly volatile geography. ie - Japan. Holland too:
http://www.businessinsider.com/netherlands-floating-houses-2015-12
Quote
More than half the people living in the Netherlands live below sea level.
As sea levels rise, things are getting more and more complicated: there's less land to build on, and plumbing becomes difficult.
The solution? Floating houses. In fact, Amsterdam's Ijburg neighborhood is the first floating neighborhood, and has 97 houses.
"We think that sustainability on the water can work even better than sustainability on land," Koen Olthuis, an architect who designs floating buildings, told the Associated Press. Olthuis's firm has built dozens of floating houses and office buildings throughout the Netherlands.

Artists' concept of floating city in Holland
So if this was to occur, Houston would not be the first. Ecological disaster/flooding now a fact of life in the world, especially with this global warming/melting of the polar ice caps. Whether it's caused by man or Nature's cycles is a matter of debate. But whatever is to blame, It'll jes get worse, K.
Anyways, I read 30 people perished/died in this latest disaster:

Taiwanese people don't have a lot in common with Texans. But while they're separated by culture, language, and 8,000 miles of ocean, they do know what it's like to shelter under punishing tropical storms.
As the city of Houston focuses on rescue efforts after Hurricane Harvey, Taiwan is looking toward reconstruction. "The government of Republic of China (Taiwan)," its Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Wednesday, "has decided to donate $800,000 for local governments and community disaster relief efforts."
According to a translated excerpt of the statement provided to the Washington Examiner, the decision stems from a shared sense of "solidarity with the victims of Harvey because Taiwan experiences typhoons every summer and fall."

It is definitely salvageable. It's a fair sized house so there will be a lot of flooring and sheet rock to replace. Just about all the down stairs furniture is ruined. But they really came out of it a lot better than we thought.

That's good I suppose.
Just to put things in perspective, 19 trillion US gallons of water is 72 trillion litres.
Sydney, a city of 4.4m, consumes about 520 billion litres of water per year for all purposes - residential, commercial, and industrial.
So Harvey dumped 38 years worth of Sydney's annual water consumption.
And that doesn't count the water after it left Houston. Hard to fathom that much water my friend, hard to imagine.

Yeah I saw that...LOL There was an off road shop a few miles from my house that used everyone of their vehicles rescuing folks and coordinated over 100 volunteer boats. Not sure if that was one of their vehicles but it wouldn't surprise me.
But the Texas National Guard was here extremely fast, I saw several squads in my area working. I'm sure there will be crap said about the response but I have no complaints. They helped but we took care of ourselves and continue to do so. Rescue phase is over for the most part. In recovery mode now. We will make it. May be the biggest rodeo but not our first. We got this.

There is always some. Can't seem to get away from that happening. Don't think it was as much as would have happened somewhere else. Before Harvey you could get 2-20 years if caught. It was announced that if you looted during Harvey it would be 5-life. Now we just have to watch for the scam artists that will inevitably show up to take advantage of the reconstruction. Those guys should get 10-life...

I agree 100%.
It's easy to say because I am not in their shoes but I hope victims of this hurricane can dig deeper and feel blessed they have their lives. Material possessions can be replaced but life is precious.
What a living hell this is. Victims will suffer from the effects of this catastrophe for decades.

I stayed put and watched the fiasco go down. Cars were overheating, not running the A/C to save gas. Temp was 100.

Ya, I should probably look for other sources for coverage.
Let's say I'm not left or right but somewhere in the middle. If I listen to CNN and the other channels, it's doom and gloom. If I listen to Fox, at least they provide both sides by inviting the perspective of folks from each side. That is what I appreciate.

Basic unleaded is about A$1.15/litre here, or A$4.35/US gallon. 98 Octane is about A$1.28/litre, or A4.85/US gallon.
I run on liquified petroleum gas, which is a propane/butane blend (varies by season) at about $0.62/litre, or $2.35/US gallon.
All prices are A$, which is currently sitting on 80 US cents and on parity with the Canadian dollar.
Seems a lot of the flooding damage in Houston could've been avoided.
Quote
DALLAS -- A report released two decades ago on the Harris County reservoir system predicted with alarming accuracy the catastrophic flooding that would besiege the Houston area if changes weren't made in the face of rapid development.
The report released in 1996 by engineers with the Harris County Flood Control District said the Addicks and Barker reservoirs were adequate when built in the 1940s. But it noted that as entire neighbourhoods sprouted over the years around the reservoirs in western Harris County, as many as 25,000 homes and businesses at the time were exposed to the kind of flooding Harvey has now brought.
In the report obtained by The Dallas Morning News , engineers proposed a $400 million solution that involved building a massive underground conduit that would more quickly carry water out of the reservoirs and into the Houston Ship Channel. The conceptual plan envisioned a conduit consisting of eight channels to carry water out of the reservoirs and safely past developed areas downstream.
But the timing in 1996 was right, the engineers noted. The Texas Department of Transportation was launching a reconstruction of the Katy Freeway, a portion of Interstate 10 west of downtown Houston that leads directly from the two reservoirs to the downtown section, and it would have been a suitable route for the drainage channel, they said
Other solutions were offered, such as digging the reservoirs deeper, buying out properties at risk of flooding and imposing new regulations on development.
"Do nothing and accept risk of flooding," the report warned.
The report was filed away without action, then last week Harvey struck. The usually dry Addicks and Barker reservoirs quickly filled until, on Aug. 28, they were nearly full and water had spread to their surrounding neighbourhoods. The Army Corps of Engineers opened the floodgates to let a controlled amount escape. But instead of the normal 4,000 cubic feet per second, Corps officials opened the gates wide enough to release more than 13,000 cubic feet per second to keep the rising reservoir levels from overtopping the dams. They did so knowing it would flood neighbourhoods downstream.
And just as the 1996 report predicted, water in many of the flooded homes would not drain for days or even weeks.
Who gets the blame? The Corps said with no federal money appropriated, there was no federal project, although Harris County is "welcome to do that if they can work with whatever partners they need to do that, and we would encourage it to happen," said Richard Long, supervisory natural resources manager for the Houston Project Office of the Corps' Galveston District.
Harris County Commissioner Steve Radack, whose precinct includes the reservoirs, blames Congress, which never allocated the money and credited the Corps with "an outstanding job of managing this reservoir, outstanding."
The issue is moot for Aaron Voges, whose family home is in a neighbourhood located inside a flooded reservoir.
"For some stupid reason I thought that levee that I see on my way home, I thought that protected me," he said. "I had no idea that there were plans in place to flood me to protect other people, which blows my mind."
On Tuesday, a Houston lawyer whose home was among those flooded filed a federal lawsuit against the Corps. Bryant Banes said the class-action suit seeks compensation from the federal government for what was effectively condemnation of their west Houston properties when water released from the reservoirs flooded Buffalo Bayou.

Isn't it always the way? Experts report on a problem. Problem gets swept under the carpet because no-one wants to pay for it. Consequences of the problem surface, just like the experts said they would. Net result, it costs everybody a lot more money to fix what could have been prevented.
Didn't something similar happen with Katrina and New Orleans?

In summer it's generally 100% propane. In winter they mix in some butane to assist starting.
It's quite common down here. Most are after-market conversions with a big cylindrical tank in the boot (trunk), but mine is a Ford factory install. Under the bonnet (hood) it looks indistinguishable from a regular petrol (gasoline) engine. Instead of a petrol tank it has a couple of scuba-shaped LPG tanks.
Ford has stopped manufacturing this range of cars because they have closed their Australian factory, so I'll probably look at some kind of hybrid next time.
Biofuels, such as the cooking oil conversions you mentioned, have a small hard-core following down here. They claim to run their diesel engines on it with little or no conversion work. [shrug]

Thats pretty cool, but sucks they closed shop.
Yeah it was some 4 wheel drive show, very lil conversion indeed. They still had to use gasoline at first til the engine warmed up, and the tank that held the grease warmed up. Once it was, they flipped a switch and good to go on grease lol.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Aerial spraying to combat mosquitoes is scheduled to begin Thursday evening in Harris County, Texas, CBS affiliate KHOU reports. Harris County Public Health says the rain and flooding left behind by Hurricane Harvey created large areas where mosquitoes can lay their eggs.
The operation may take more than a day, and county health officials say the public should not fear the spray being used to control the mosquito population.
The U.S. Air Force Reserve's 910th Airlift Wing will fly a modified C-130 cargo plane to conduct the aerial sprays. The plan is to spray 600,000 acres, mostly outside of the City of Houston limits.

We have skeeters here too, and they use to not be so bad. They bad this year, plus several years ago we started getting these ones that are black with white stripes. Those buggers leave welps on me. And skeeters LOVE me lol. One year I went camping and within 24 hours I had over 50 bites, I counted them lol. So now I always make sure I have some kind of repellent on me. Outside my house they are worst during that magic hour that the sun is going down.

My wife and I have travelled extensively in the Caribbean. It will be years in some cases for things to return to normal.
Looks like we will have a small storm coming through tonight and tomorrow, Tropical Storm Imelda...I say small, it could possibly stall and get a lot stronger. Right now only 40 mph sustained winds, of course Harvey wasn't much more when it got here. Hopefully it zips through and just drops some needed rain and doesn't stick around for 5 days.
I know there will be some damage next door. Neighbor has a big rotten tree limb that is broken off and sitting on another limb. Should fall on the neighbors back fence tonight. Be my luck the pine tree just off my patio will fall over my house....LOL

Meh...LOL
I thought hurricane season wasn't as bad this year as previous years.
It's happened before and I am sure it will happen again. Lots of tropical activity out there now. Only one named storm on the Atlantic side. Course there are 3 disturbances out there as well. Having a place on Galveston bay, and living in Houston all my life, we tend to pay close attention to the Atlantic/Gulf side of things.

Galveston must get hit hard if there's a Gulf of Mexico hurricane?
If it hits Galveston and is strong enough to do damage, sure. But it's the same for everyone else along the entire gulf coast.

Funny how the song writer used fiction to make the song more dramatic. The seawall construction was started because of and after the 1900 hurricane. Now, the seawall has had water come over it but that was in 2008, same storm that wiped out my house there. Seawall was not the cause of my house getting totaled, but rather the flood dyke that protects the little cities and towns along the ship channel and behind Galveston bay. In fact had the flood dyke not been there I would not have had any water get in the house, but since I can easily see the dyke from my house, the upward surge of the water being stopped pushed the depth to over 12+ feet above sea level which put about 18 inches of water in my house.
Quote
It was the year of 1900 that was 60 years ago
Death come'd a howling on the ocean and when death calls you've got to go
Galveston had a sea wall just to keep the water down
But a high tide from the ocean blew the water all over the town.
Quote
The Galveston Seawall is a seawall in Galveston, Texas, that was built after the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 for protection from future hurricanes. Construction began in September 1902, and the initial segment was completed on July 29, 1904. From 1904 to 1963, the seawall was extended from 3.3 miles (5.3 km) to over 10 miles (16 km).

So do people who mistakenly believe that people who live on a sandbar would have the good sense to BUILD a seawall, since it was proposed thirty years previously after watching Indianola get destroyed twice.
More like 15 years after the 1886 storm. Yeah I know nit pickin' but the one thing I do find slightly humorous is this...
Quote
"Six weeks after the second Indianola storm, a group of thirty prominent Galveston residents calling themselves the Progressive Association met and resolved to build a seawall", and "The city's Evening Tribune endorsed the plan". However, although "The state eventually did authorize a bond to pay for the work," the city's engineer E.M. Hartwick observed, "this was some months after the flood, and by then the attitude was, Oh, we'll never get another one--and they didn't build."

My husband's company has employees working in the Gulf of Mexico that they had to bring to shore.
It is up to 150 MPH winds, 6 more and its a Cat 5. It's going to be pretty bad along the Louisiana coast since it is catching all of the dirty side of the storm. Going to be some major storm surge damage I imagine. This thing is so tight and compact it may not impact us at all. No major winds and no rain to speak of. Gives me time to get my generator here for the next one. Nothing I wanted was available so I had to order something that would arrive well after this storm.
The smaller area it does hit will be brutal - and surge on the right side massive

Yeah it missed us completely. Zero rain recorded in our area. No major winds. We were lucky. Lots of emergency vehicles from all over the state as well as individuals with boats staged at NRG stadium waiting for first light to know where to head to. Hoping storm surge is all that they have to worry about in Louisiana since it is moving so fast. Won't be like Harvey dropping rain for 5 days on one area.
At least you'll have your generator for the next one...
My area just got a double whammy this evening... power and mobile phone towers out. We're operating on battery packs because I can't be bothered to fish the generator out.
