A short clip of Irma hitting Barbuda. The trees at the end are fearsome. Glad it is supposed to weaken some before getting to Florida. My heart goes out to the islands in the path.
My heart goes out to everyone in it's path.
My truck is registered with the Ministry of Transport, in case we have a natural disaster. Ka-Ching!!!!!
However, we don't seem to have natural disasters here. If we did, it would be great for business!

Who would pay you Mel?
The Ministry, I suppose... which would mean the taxpayer!

I go to Florida every year. But, in the winter though. Most newer buildings are designed with hurricanes in mind.
I'm watching live coverage from Florida as that state braces for the full impact of this powerful hurricane.
Poor souls. May Mother Nature have mercy on them all.
The West / Gulf side of state is in and in for more hell. The angle of approach is pretty much max for damage (wind and ocean surge) & still Cat 3
Now coming up on Ft Myers, Venice, Punta Gorda and Sarasota where we lived for 3 yeas, ... then Braddenton and on to Tampa / Clearwater
Rode out one in Sarasota that was about 50 miles offshore so not max power but darn strong (and perfect angle for max surge) - it did flip our 27 ft Sport Fisherman as ropes were not long enough to handle the high water level so it tipped and filled with water as did many .. that was costly. That one beat up the long islands (keys) on the outside of the Intercoastal Waterway .. Longboat Key opposite us and many other keys
This one is the monster from hell and so far right on the coast line. Dunno if keys will even remain at all nor how far the surge will go inland
Most all of Florida peninsula is so low lying and dead flat

Meteorologists predicted the Atlantic side of Florida would suffer the worst wrath of Irma..
But, it's the Gulf side that will be hit the hardest.
Yes. It stuck along the mountains of Cuba for longer than Meteorologists expected and did the turn later than previously expected to line up with the Gulf coast ... picking up heat and power from 90 degree waters once it turned north

That is frightening experience leaving your house behind to escape a natural disaster..
It was hard for us to abandon our home during the Southern Alberta flood.
I have thought about buying property in Florida. Hurricanes were the reason I decided against it.
ampa and the surrounding area, whose population is about four million, is not prepared for a storm of this magnitude. Too many homes and businesses are too close to the water, and coastal defenses are too few, for catastrophic damage to be avoided.
Yes. Tampa could be very bad depending on the strength when it gets there
I wonder if Naples still exists - it caught cat 3 dead on

Also tornadoes are very frequent.
As long as you don't try to find your balls in the waterholes you are prolly good to go ... sorry, that didn't come out the way I intended

Lol. I'm sure it didn't.
I do love that state. I've made friends down there that own property. Most are expats from Southern Ontario. Man, I hope mother nature is merciful to them.
What part of state do you go to?

This year I went to the panhandle near Panama City Beach. There's a golf course nearby I really like.
But, I have gone to both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. I've been to the Gulf side more than the Atlantic side. And I've been to Tampa several times. I know people that own property in the area. Sad, sad, sad what's happening.
Long ago we were involved in Gulf side golf course construction in Badenton, Ft Meyers, Punta Gorda , Naples .. all today in the eye of the monster
Oh, and the big one further south - Rotunda West Course 1 ... Do you know if that development ever took off and got finished?

You are lucky. I've golfed at courses you made. ac_drinks And yes it's open.
Did Rotunda do all 4 courses (c/w housing) .. and a service area (stores etc) in the middle .. as planned initially
As I recall it was a mile in diameter with a golf course and housing in each of 4 separate 1/4 circles
A gator treed my mate on that project ... he was working to get a pump station running with his back to the water and the pond gator was crawling toward him ... pump stations were out doors and power stuff on a post. He had no marshmallows to feed the guy and jumped onto a 4 ft post
Crew of Crackers finally came with the pickup to pick him up and laughed like crazy even though he was company owner .. . even took pictures before "saving" him, lol

Holy fuck, you've been involved in a variety of businesses.
All same industry .. water systems. Way back he specialised in golf irrigation as contractor / designer
Mostly same company, but LOTS of different places though

Ah, got it.
Was interesting times in Florida and Filippines .. challenging projects ... got to work with many of the very top golfers .. most of them really neat people
Seven million people are without power and some could be without power for weeks..
Kiebers, is life returning to normal?
Yes. Irma took over the news. How is Texas doing?

I'm thinking about them too.
Texas is doing as well as can be expected. We are strong and have experience with this kind of thing. It's a long road and will take time. JJ Watts flood relief fund is reaching 32 million with donations from all over the world.
Aw. Joe knows someone who owns a cpl of restaurants.
We need a thread on this
I feel terrible for all the victims in Texas and Florida. I can't give much, but I am sendng a check to each.
On the lighter side--
what's with these names? Harvey and Irma? They really don't inspire much fear or dread. Harvey sounds like the greasy haired kid in school with taped glasses that honks when he laughs. honk honk
and Irma sounds like an 80 year old jewish grandma, Oy vey, not very scary, bubbie.

I talked with my barber last Saturday, when I went in for a cut.
I said, "why do these people stay where they live?"
He has a customer whom has a brother that lives in Houston, and JUST finished his restoration/repairs now, from the LAST disaster that hit! Now he gets to start all over again!
Like I then said, "Why not move to fucking Colorado or somewhere like that?"
Well, people generally stay where they are, have work there, family, friends, etc...

And how about you and your family kiebers?
