I was not eager to watch tonight's game. I'm still a little sore from how they ended their season during the Stanley Cup championships. Maybe I'm not over it yet. So close and yet so far. What's it going to be like this time, Caps? Sigh. :ththbored: :ththbored: :ththbored:
Hm. In the last two games, Blues 4, Caps 0. Last night, Canes 4, Caps 1. How exciting. :ththbored:

That's nothing compared to the spanking the Oilers will give the Crapitals.
Oh yeah!? Okay, let's see some action here then. :nhl_checking:
Great! Finally, some interest in hockey here. Maybe the rumors are true that Canadians like hockey. ac_biggrin

I don't really have a lot of interest in pro sports. A bunch of multi-millionaire athletes that taxpayers in this city subsidize. However, I want the Oilers to win the cup.
At least the Oilers have won it in the past. It will be a first for the Caps whenever that happens.
I am a fairweather fan. When the Maple Leafs are winning, I jump on the bandwagon. When they are not, I jump just as quickly.
I don't know if I am a fairweather fan. I like hockey and I like a dignified team. I like the Caps but I like others too. I like the Blackhawks, the Flames, etc. As of today, I like the Penguins now too. ac_biggrin

Go Flames.

I would like to see Toronto do well this season.
Every start of a hockey season when my son used to play, to cheer his team on and give them a boost, I used to give the boys a pep talk and say, "Where's the HUNGER, boys? I want to see HUNGER!" This year, even I don't have this hunger. Sigh.

He doesn't play recreationally anymore Azhya?
He said he might hang up his skates now but I really don't' know.

I believe you said he was a forward Azhya?
He can be a left winger or a right winger but he shoots right. He can be a center too. He has been a captain also. While he played high school hockey, he was always among the scoring leaders. That is just for the playing schools here in our region. He'd be mentioned in the local paper in the high school sports section. Made me so proud. One time, one high school that was about one hour away recruited him to play for them. The coach knocked on our door one evening and asked if he could come in and explain why he was visiting. He was also recruited by the best high school in our county to join their team. He was so honored. His Senior year with them was so much fun! High school hockey is a lot of fun because the students come out to cheer. Amateur league games were different because the fans watching are mostly the family members of the players so its not like a professional game where people pay to watch. The crowd is therefore smaller. However, at tournaments, that's when the crowds are larger. His nickname was Speed Demon and I was always asked how he got his speed. I don't know. Haha!

He sounds like a naturally gifted hockey player Azhya.

Thanks, Fash. I agree. He played soccer first, then basketball, then baseball but once he got on the ice, he found the spotlight. He was really into hockey that he had no time to try football. He would not have made it anyway. He is not a huge guy. He has a small frame but fast, fit, and strong.

It's hard for a smaller player to make the NHL..
My son plays soccer..
We're happy with that because it's cheaper than hockey.
Oh he wasn't going to the NHL, Fash. He was good but not that good. The competition in hockey is fierce. There's a lot of tiers too, A, AA, AAA.

I know that from other couples we know who have their sons in hockey.
More than one son might be a little too much, yes. They both played hockey one season but the youngest did not want to pursue it after one season. He said it was not for him.

Did any other sport interest him?
No.
Fash, my son was just like other normal boys who tried different types of sports but once he tried ice hockey, it just took off. He discovered his passion and he tasted success in it which he did not have in the other sports. It all started from getting roller blades and playing street hockey and I was the goalie. Thankfully, he was not shooting a puck at me but plastic balls instead. Haha!
Over here, Fash, we have Play It Again Sports stores. They buy, sell, trade sports equipment and you can usually find stuff for much less than their prices elsewhere.
The closest to you is in BC. Here it is: http://www.playitagainsportskelowna.com/

It's second hand I assume.
Yes, but in good condition. Not tattered and soiled.

I have heard something about this.
My son was particular though about his equipment. He liked to have his stuff brand new. Some things he did not mind second hand like tape or wax for example. Hockey players put tape around their stick blades and wax it to prevent moisture so the puck doesn't slide off easily.
Woohoo! So far so good!
Ovechkin had back to back hat tricks. 7 goals in two games. Wow! And we have the first Aussie in the NHL and he scored on Thursday, his first goal! Nathan Walker, eh, yeah mate! Rock the Red!

This could be the year it happens Azhya..
I don't believe Pittsburgh will repeat as Stanley Cup champions.
Calgary beat Nashville, but lost to St Louis.
I see the underachieving Edmonton Oiler defeated Dallas five to four last night..
I wonder how Azhya's Washington Capitals are doing?
The Canucks? We lost to the Canucks!? No way!
But we beat the Oilers. ac_biggrin

We beat the Bruins last night in Boston! Woohoo!
Calgary beat New Jersey 5-4 on Sunday..
They play Vancouver tonight.
Calgary lost five to three to Vancouver.
The Oilers are in DC! The Verizon Center is now called the Capital One Arena.
It used to be called the MCI Center (1997–2006) and Verizon Center (2006–2017).
Woohoo! Go Caps Go!

Calgary beat Philadelphia five to four in overtime.
The Calgary Stampeders lost the Grey Cup, but the Calgary Flames defeated Colorado three to two.

Yes, Fash. I recall. I think on that day, the Flames beat the Caps.
We are winning at home ice. The visiting Sharks are sashimi tonight.
3-1 Caps, middle of 3rd period.
Woohoo! [Goal Horn][...and the crowd goes wild...] 4-1 Caps.
Calgary is tied one to one against Philadelphia.

I don't know much about the Eastern teams.
Oh I don't know, Fash. I cannot predict that. I sure hope so though.
Calgary lost to Nashville two to zero last night, but they're leading the Canucks one to zero tonight.

UNITED STATES 4 – CANADA 3 – SHOOT OUT AT WORLD JUNIORS
http://chl.ca/article/wjc-2018-day-4-recap
Like the outcome of last year's Gold Medal Final, the United States skated to a shootout victory over Canada on Friday in the great outdoors before an event record crowd of 44,592 at New Era Field in Orchard Park, NY.
New York Islanders prospect Kieffer Bellows (Portland Winterhawks) scored a goal and provided one of Team USA's two shootout tallies in a 4-3 decision as the Americans overcame a two-goal deficit to win on home ice.
Cale Makar and Dillon Dube (Kelowna Rockets) scored first period power play goals for Canada while Carter Hart (Everett Silvertips) stood tall, stopping all 11 first period shots he faced.
Bellows struck on the power play 6:27 into the second period to get the Americans on the board before Boris Katchouk (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds) wrestled back the momentum a minute later, deflecting a Jake Bean (Calgary Hitmen) point shot past goaltender Jake Oettinger to give Canada a 3-1 lead after two.
Buffalo Sabres prospect Casey Mittelstadt set up two goals inside the sixth minute of the third period, first setting up Scott Perunovich on the power play before Brady Tkachuk scored the equalizer 34 seconds later to knot the score at three.
Overtime would solve nothing as the United States outshot Canada 36-22 through 65 minutes of play.
Bellows and Tkachuk converted in the shootout for Team USA while Canada's Sam Steel (Regina Pats) hit a goal post before Robert Thomas (London Knights), Taylor Raddysh (Erie Otters) and Drake Batherson (Cape Breton Screaming Eagles) failed to beat Oettinger.
"Just playing with a lead, I think that's tough," reflected Canadian captain Dillon Dube after the loss. "Obviously, with a team like that they know how to score and create offence so when we have a lead like that we need to hold it. But, overall, we did well with everything going on tonight so we have to build off that."
Canada's Carter Hart (Everett Silvertips) earned Player of the Game honours with a 32-save performance while Team USA's Casey Mittelstadt recorded three assists to earn Player of the Game honours for his team.
Canada (2-1) looks to rebound on Saturday night when they square off against Denmark at Key Bank Center at 8:00pm ET. The United States (2-1) returns to action on Sunday against Finland.

That was some game Azhya..
It was outside, it was snowing heavily in Buffalo and Canada was up by two goals.
Great game.
Today, the Rangers beat the Sabres in the Winter Classic. Both New York teams. Anyway, I wish someone would put their foot down and end these outdoor games. I fail to see the value of it.
In Juniors, USA play Russia tomorrow, Tuesday. That ought to be quite a game.
Winnipeg Jets in third place so they will go to the playoffs if they keep that up.
If Winnipeg and Toronto keep up their place in the standings, they could both be in the playoffs. Winnipeg is in third place and Toronto is in 10th place.

I wouldn't like to be out there watching the game for 3 hours or so in that cold weather or blizzard. It's not necessary. Anyway, if they keep it up, so be it. I am not crazy about the idea.

I know it's not about this hockey season, but Tiger Williams was a legendary hockey tough guy.
Former NHL star Dave "Tiger" Williams has been charged by military police with sexual assault in connection with an incident that took place aboard an air force flight.
National Defence released a brief statement Friday, saying Williams was taking part in a morale visit to the Canadian contingent in Latvia just before Christmas.
An incident took place on a C-150 passenger jet overnight flight to Riga between Dec. 2 and 3. The alleged victim was another passenger, who reported the incident while they were en route.
Williams is facing one count of sexual assault under the Criminal Code and one count of common assault. Officials at the Department of National Defence say the case will be handed over to a civilian Crown prosecutor in Ottawa for consideration.
The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service would not release any information about the alleged victim.
The charges against Williams come at a time when the military has been cracking down on sexual assault and misconduct among its own members.
"Every allegation of sexual assault is taken seriously by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service," said Lt.-Col. Kevin Cadman, the commanding officer of the investigation service, in a statement.
"In all cases, no matter who the accused is, we strive to restore the dignity of victims by fully investigating their complaints, gathering evidence, reconstructing events, and if warranted, laying appropriate charges."
National Defence would not comment on whether Williams was allowed to continue with the show tour after the allegations were made.
"The matter is about to go before the courts and, as such, I can't provide any additional information beyond what was communicated by CFNIS," spokesman Dan Lebouthillier.
However, a defence source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the former hockey enforcer was not removed from the schedule and returned with the troupe in mid-December.
Williams, 64, played in the NHL from 1974 to 1988 for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and Hartford Whalers.
Military police were the lead in this instance because they have jurisdiction over all defence establishments, including aircraft.
Williams has been a regular on military morale tours, travelling to Afghanistan to play celebrity ball hockey games against troops when they were deployed.
He took part in 14 such overseas excursions.
These kinds of celebrity morale-building trips are a feature of overseas deployments in many Western militaries.
Williams was scheduled to play in an All-Star Celebrity Classic in Regina on Feb. 17 as part of a contingent of 41 former NHL players.
"He actually pulled out of the game two and a half weeks ago," said Phil Andrews, director of communications for the Regina Pats. He didn't say why.
Andrews said the company that had booked Williams' appearance just gave word to the Pats that he would no longer be in attendance

He was apparently so drunk he crapped his pants. Flight attendants refused to travel back on the same plane with him.
What a fucking animal. In his mid 60's too.
He must be an alkie.

In the hockey world, the NHL playoffs are underway. Facing elimination tonight, the Philadelphia Flyers rallied to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 in a suspenseful race forcing a Game 6 on Sunday in the Flyer's home rink where they have home ice advantage. Looks like the weekend will be packed with playoff hockey and there's nothing like playoff hockey, folks! Woohoo!
Hockey sucks!
It is a given that hockey sucks to pussies like you.
The Winnipeg Jets will probably be the only Canadian team to advance to the second round of the playoffs.
The Toronto Maple Leafs beat Boston four to three forcing a game six.
Toronto is fighting tooth and nail to hang on. They are ahead 2-1 with 5:43 remaining in the 3rd period. If they win tonight, that's 3 games a piece for each team and Game 7 will name the winner of this series. Good job, Toronto, for staying in the game!
