Not much at all in my area, not since Obama came into office. Southwest Virginia is hurting bad.

I live in a Railroad town. I believe it was the coal regulations.
Also, around that time, oil prices went up, sending the prices of everything up, and the market crashed during the housing crisis. They say it was bad loans, but I know what it was, oil prices sending up other prices. My wage hasnt changed in those 8 years, wages are stagnant all around this area since then. No hiring either. The local paper (which either has or is moving out of town), use to put out a Jobs Weekly paper. Use to be 16 pages or so. It dwindled to 2 pages before they quit printing them altogether.
Big companies are packing up and moving out. Some going to Northern Virginia, which I hear is better off.
One of the first and main ones, the Norfolk Southern Railway corporate office closed up and 500 jobs transferred out. Several others, including the main distribution post office. Now, if someone mails something here, and is suppose to go here, it still takes 6 days cause it has to be sent to Greensboro for distribution. We still have local postal offices.
Lost thousands upon thousands of jobs here.

It is! At least I think it is. Things have doubled in price around here but not the wages. The medical field is doing good around here though. Its the only thing I know of thats booming lol. Carilion has a strong foothold here. I dont wanna work for a hospital though, thats the first place zombies go! :laugh:

Alberta created the most full time jobs of any province in Canada last month, but the unemployment rate stayed the same at 7,8%..
So, either an equal number of jobs were lost or more people entered the workforce offsetting any employment gains.

The economy shrank in August and exports are dropping. Consumer and public debt is holding up the Canadian economy at the moment and neither is sustainable.

I understand what you are saying, many ARE lower paying jobs, but I do see better paying jobs too. Transit jobs, government agency jobs, healthcare jobs, industrial jobs. Heck, even casinos pay better than minimum wage jobs.
Plus, we all start somewhere...
I don't see minimum wage jobs as long term career options, but we all need to start somewhere, gain some experiences, and aim for better jobs.
And, my point was that there are jobs out there for those who are looking.
The problem is, Super, is that even at $30/hour, people cannot afford to live here.

Not everyone buys million dollar homes. Some live further out, or make due with less expensive/suburban apartments.
Luckily I bought 20 years ago. It's not a castle, but its mine and the Mrs. Luckily we both make a livable wage and can afford suburban living. Not having kids helps too...
I do work with a number of guys who also work second jobs or have side businesses.
We have friends who have retired and relocated to the Okanagan. That might be a option for us too.
