You should  write a book about your brilliant move. Right after you learn how to read one first of course.

I'll be flat out honest here...  I LOVE Vegas (have been twice), and was not shy with either the tables, nor the machines.

I know what the odds are.  I ALSO know a family friend that spends too MUCH time in Casino...

You know what she did also, Super?  She ONLY reported winnings.  We knew there were losses...  THAT made her uncomfortable, so it wasn't even asked.

What are the losses like, Super?

I invest, and I make these calculations before I decide to throw money at something.

Well, the house always wins. I'd guesstimate that the Mrs and I have probably spent/loss $80,000 more than we have won over the past 20 years. But its our fun. We don't smoke, don't do drugs, don't drink heavily. We've enjoyed many (17) trips to Vegas, and to many casinos all over the Pacific northwest. We have occasionally won jackpots in the $1,500 to $2,000 range. Earn free hotel stays in Vegas, earn free air and hotel packages to Laughlin, earn free meals, seen dozens of concerts and live shows... Its our fun, our escape.

Used to be weekly, when her dad was still alive, was our weekly lunch out.

Now, more like every payday/every 2 weeks.

When my father n law, and my mom too, were alive: Yes! Either lunch in the neighbouring pub or buffet. Slot card holders can get 10 or even 15% off food purchases.

The eateries at the American casino's are even better! In the US you earn points when you gamble and can redeem those points towards free or near free meals. The buffets are better in the states too.

When in Vegas, we specifically head to The Gold Coast buffet. Breakfast buffet is like $8!; lunch is $11, and dinner is like $15! If we go on a Wednesday, and earn a few points gambling, we've eaten for free!

I skipped buffets when the old lady and I were in  Vegas. It makes me too full and I don't want to drink.

They are pretty good in Saskatoon and Regina. But, like Sup says, they don't compare to Vegas.

Win or losing at gambling is not a "one day" calculation.

It is measured over the period of time you gamble. So, a $3,000 win on a single day for infrequent gamblers is a BIG win.

But if that $3000 eventually finds its way back into the Casino, it means nothing. And in my experience, MOST of the money finds its way back into the Casino.

Yes.

And poker machines in most pubs and clubs. Gambling addiction is a HUGE problem here, and until recently largely ignored by the Government.

Now there are a number of measures in place to try and break the cycle of addiction that causes so much damage to individuals and families. That still doesn't stop the problem entirely. But Casinos are now forbidden to offer benefits to large, problem gamblers, and even pubs and clubs must, at all times, have a responsible person in charge who must intervene if they believe a gambler is acting irrationally.

I think the machines have been altered to prevent certain forms of wager.

Over even relatively short periods of time, House Wins!!

And yes, addiction is a huge problem for many families. Every member of the family suffers.

I doubt ANY govt measures will "significantly" change things so long as venues exist.

Not for everyone. I have never initiated gambling in my life and never will .. do not like "the feel" of the places, period

However, I have been bankrolled twice by dates whose turn it was to pick evening venue so went along with it, got lucky  and won a fair bit .. one was a lot in fact.

Still I found that part of the evening extremely boring for me .... wanted to get it over and out of there ... I've always known that if one keeps at it, ultimately only the house wins

As to whether the gents also got lucky, I'll never tell

Actually, they do understand this concept but just won't admit it, and try really hard to focus only on the wins, and not the losses, over time.

Any gambler would not be able to run a business...  The books would be a god damned mess at year end.

Yes, the losses exceed the wins, but it's our fun.

I'm not criticizing your choices in life.  Just understand that we have been posting together on these forums for a very long time...  Like over 10 years now or so.

I have never once seen you post about losses, EVER (until now)!  I have known other heavy gamblers that do the same!

It's like everything else...  If you have the cash to play, like doing what you're doing, and it doesn't affect other aspects of your life, I say GO HARD AND HEAVY!

I also got Superchecker to call his old ex a bitch once also...  I was shocked!  We need more of that PASSION!

Quote from: "Bricktop"Win or losing at gambling is not a "one day" calculation.

It is measured over the period of time you gamble. So, a $3,000 win on a single day for infrequent gamblers is a BIG win.

But if that $3000 eventually finds its way back into the Casino, it means nothing. And in my experience, MOST of the money finds its way back into the Casino.

Superchecker doesn't understand this concept.  I have known other 'heavy' gamblers that do not understand this either.

Actually, they do understand this concept but just won't admit it, and try really hard to focus only on the wins, and not the losses, over time.

Any gambler would not be able to run a business...  The books would be a god damned mess at year end.

It our fun, our escape.

Yes, the losses exceed the wins, but it's our fun.

We don't have kids, don't do drugs, don't smoke, are not excessive drinkers.

It's our choice, and our fun.

That's what I fugured. Have at her brother.

Not bad!

I don't like gambling, but that win couldn't have happened to a nicer man.

The stock market is essentially gambling in a legalized form

It takes your money with the hope or expectation that your money will grow.

Then the stock broker rakes in ur money like the croupier.

The money eventually finds its way to the stock exchange which is essentially like a casino.

Just like a casino they let you win in the early stages of investing.

And then when the price rises high enough, they call the bets and at some point the price plunges aka a correction occurs. The stock exchange takes your hard earned money off the table which 'magically' disappears from your investment account yet somehow finds its way into the pockets of someone else.

In either scenario it's like knowing when to hold em and knowing when to fold em

Its all about the odds

So if Superchecker can find a way to win without using a stock exchange, all the power to him.

In some respects the casino is more honest because at least they openly admit that their endeavor is full of scumbags cheats and liars. While the stock exchange hides behind a facade/false aura of 'respectability'.

No, it's not and I can tell you don't have a pension invested in solid companies..

Besides my pension, I also buy mutual funds..

If I invest conservatively, over a ten year period my investment will not go down..

The managers don't invest in penny stocks or quasi legit companies on the VSE..

Besides real companies, they invest in government bonds,..

These securities are backed by the federal government and among all fixed income securities....ranging from corporate to municipal bonds....carry the least amount of risk for default..

Superchecker knows this because he has a defined benefit pension plan and retirement investments.

I wouldn't be expecting much if any pensions or stock investments to be there when we retire. Governments suck at guaranteeing, managing economics, and not stealing themselves during hard times.

Hard assets are the way to go.

I have to say that in my estimation, the Great Ponzi Scheme that is the western economy is fraught with potential disaster.

We came close in 08.

I'm with Freud. Hard assets offer more security. We have both, hedging our bets.

Hard assets, pay off any debt, live within one's means, diversify, and don't leave your savings or items in a typical bank with weak governmental guarantees or legislation permitting the cracking open of safe deposit boxes.

Bank of America has lost a number of customers' items lately, Greek and Japanese banks have been known to skim off balances in bailouts or negative interest rates. Also daily withdrawal limits.

Investing in real companies has actually gone up more reliably than real estate since world war 2.

Canadian banks are very secure, as they have forced insurance for any losses...  Meaning that if you had $500,000 in a savings account, it would be safe and you'd get your money no matter what.

Stocks are always a risk that one takes.  They obviously can go up and down.

Real estate can be a gamble.  My Grandfather and biological Father almost went broke when their home building company went bust due to a massive increase in mortgage rates...  Buyers weren't buying, and they were left with four properties (some already built) that were now their problem.  Of course, if they had held out, they would've been rich today, but they couldn't.

Then again, nobody back then could predict how the Vancouver real estate market would eventually boom.

Gold and Silver...  Meh.  Buy it if it makes you feel secure...  Just factor in for potential theft.

I am not a super knowledgeable investor, but I have stocks I have had for over twenty years. All big companies and they are worth a lot more today than than they were when I first invested.
