It should be a privilege just like Japan.
Immigration should be a privilege. And like all privileges it should not be given to 300,000 people per year plus tens of thousands more bogus refugees. No refugees period. And maybe 25,000 immigrants.
Japan has built a great advanced civilization. And they want to be careful and keep it that way. Good for them.
I agree, immigration should be relatively small so that immigrants assimilate rather then flock to enclaves where they live isolated from the dominant culture.

If it was a right, there would be no borders.
It should not be a right but it could be a privilege to those who have agreed to do the following and achieved these:
1. Learned to speak the language of that country.
2. Have agreed to assimilate into that country's society or culture.
3. Denounce the said country's enemies.
4. Willing to take up arms to defend said country against its enemies, foreign and domestic.
Driving a vehicle and using a gun shouldn't be a privilege but a right. Operating over borders too.

Before, I would say immigration should be a right. You should be allowed to go wherever you want and live where you want. Even here in the U.S. this country was founded on immigration.

This is what happens when immigration becomes more of a right than a privilege.

Is there a country in the world where immigration is a right? I travel a lot for my business, but I have yet to enter a nation where it is a right. Immigration policies are set as per the needs of the host nation.
I heard an interesting stat today. In 1989, there were sixteen international fences or walls in the world. in 2017 there are seventy in operation or under construction. It seems Trump is on the right side of trends.

From what I've seen walls work. They work in Hungary where Orban put one up and they work in Israel as well. I would like to see if one would work on the mexican border. It won;t keep everytione out but it will make it harder to get here. That will make for fewer illegals and less drug traffic. How are children supposed to succeed in an English speaking country if they don't learn english properly? These children are being set up to fail, and we are being set up to have to take care of them.

Unfortunately that last part is not happening anymore. People are coming into western countries from areas where the majority of their people hate the west and our way of life. People are coming in who end up on watch lists, which takes money to watch them, and even when they are watched, they often go on to commit terrorist acts. We are taking in lots of people we know will likely end up on welfrare their whole lives or a good part. We are allowing criminals to stay because their lives MAY be in danger if they are sent home. We are taking back in people who have joined ISIS.
Not to mention the damage to citizens rights like laws punishing free speech that have come with it all.
Western countries are heavily leaning into the immigration is a right terroritory and we are worse for it. Its time to fix that and make immigration something more a of privilege, something that benefits a country not just takes away and gives little back.

2.legal immigrants must support themsleves--they can be on welfare for a short time, (a year overall perhaps) but if they cannot support themeslves after that they will deported
3.language--legal immigrants should be tested after a year-- they must demonstrate a moderate command of the English language at that time

Enough of the dabbling though-- Canada needs to start taking in more Mexicans, south and central Americans, Hatians, jamaicans, Africans, and extra Middle Easterners --that is serious multiculturalism right there, that is real diversity.

President Donald Trump reportedly asked why the U.S. is "having all these people from shithole countries come here." I think he could have used better language, but it's a question that should be asked and answered. I have a few questions for my fellow Americans to consider. How many Norwegians have illegally entered our nation, committed crimes and burdened our prison and welfare systems? I might ask the same question about Finnish, Swedish, Welsh, Icelanders, Greenlanders and New Zealanders. The bulk of our immigration problem is with people who enter our country criminally from Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East. It's illegal immigrants from those countries who have committed crimes and burdened our criminal justice and welfare systems. A large number of immigrants who are here illegally — perhaps the majority are law-abiding in other respects — have fled oppressive, brutal and corrupt regimes to seek a better life in America.
In the debate about illegal immigration, there are questions that are not explicitly asked but can be answered with a straight "yes" or "no": Does everyone in the world have a right to live in the U.S.? Do Americans have a right to decide who and under what conditions a person may enter our country? Should we permit foreigners landing at our airports to ignore U.S. border control laws just as some ignore our laws at our southern border? The reason those questions are not asked is that one would be deemed an idiot for saying that everyone in the world has a right to live in our country, that Americans don't have a right to decide who lives in our country and that foreigners landing at our airports have a right to just ignore U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.
Immigration today, even when legal, is different from the immigration of yesteryear. People who came here in the 19th century and most of the 20th century came here to learn our language, learn our customs and become Americans.
There is another difference between today and yesteryear. Today, Americans are taught multiculturalism throughout their primary, secondary and college education. They are taught that one culture is no better or worse than another. To believe otherwise is criticized at best as Eurocentrism and at worst as racism. As a result,
Very unfortunate for our nation is that we have political groups that seek to use illegal immigration for their own benefit. They've created sanctuary cities and states that openly harbor criminals — people who have broken our laws. The whole concept of sanctuary cities is to give aid, comfort and sympathy to people who have broken our laws. Supporters want to prevent them from having to hide and live in fear of discovery. I'd ask whether, for the sake of equality before the law, we should apply the sanctuary concept to Americans who have broken other laws, such as robbers and tax evaders.
We should not fall prey to people who criticize our efforts to combat illegal immigration and who pompously say, "We're a nation of immigrants!" The debate is not over immigration. The debate is over illegal immigration. My sentiments on immigrants who are here legally and who want to become Americans are expressed by the sentiments in Emma Lazarus' poem "The New Colossus," which is on a plaque inside the Statue of Liberty and in part says, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."
