Title: your Christmas traditions
Post by: Anonymous on December 17, 2017, 09:42:18 PM
We pick up my mother and my mother in law and attend a special fellowship service in the afternoon of December 24..

We all come back to our house for the evening where I put out my baking, cheese fondue and various finger foods..

While everyone is eating and talking, I am busy getting the meal prepared for tomorrow..

We take pictures collectively and individually around the tree and do the same in the morning..

We sometimes watch classic Christmas movies too..

How about you?

What are your Christmas traditions?

My grandmother was Prussian.  She kept Prussian traditions and that meant an extra Christmas for us on the eve of the 24th when I was quite young

Legally blind, she always brought out a full size Santa suit and mask, stuffed it with paper and he sat there with mega presents for her only grandchild  ..  me me me   ac_smile

So many fond memories of that special and kind lady ... and Christmas was the best of all

I head home as fast as I can and this year it will be early Saturday morning. The kid and his girlfriend come over and we have a mix of Ukrainian and Asian grub. Needless to say there's always lots of booze. Christmas Day we do up wild game or a turkey. This year it will be two moose roasts because my nephews got their moose draw.

Other than that, open gifts and scratch lottery tickets. December 26, the world juniors of hockey starts. December 27, it's back up North until the end of March.

We didn't celebrate Christmas when I lived in China. When we came to Canada, we quickly started celebrating it, but it was still a distant second banana to Chinese New Year. We liked the colours of the season. Similar to CNY. We put up a tree our first year in Canada. We would go out to eat on December 25. Sometimes buffet, sometimes Chinese.

Now, with Mommy living with me and sons of my own, we have a two part Christmas. We have a big feast at my place on the 24th. I take my sons over to my Daddys for a few hours Christmas morning and they open their gifts there. We come back to my place in the afternoon for a traditional buzzard and stuffing that Mommy prepares.

In some ways, Christmas through to lunar new year is one big long family get together for Chinese people in the West.

In Australia, we spend Xmas Eve in the pool, with beer.

Xmas morning, we have breakfast on the beach, with beer.

Lunch, we barbecue sausages and drink beer.

Then we hit the pool. With beer.

Dinner is usually just a light meal. With a few beers.

By 9.00pm, we're so tired from all the work and exertions...

Kolbassa and beer for Christmas. Got to love it. Throw in some big booty tramps and it could be one of my past Christmases in Brazil, Columbia, or Ecuador.

I don't really have traditions per se. I have a routine I usually follow for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  On Christmas eve, my girlfriend and I go to my parents house and spend  the night. I bring gifts for my nephews and niece. Christmas day I go to my  girlfriend's parents' house and spend the night. Lots of spirits and food are consumed.

Well, my traditions have changed over the years but still do some. Usually cause of someone passing or finances and such. When I was a kid, we got a present on Eve, and the rest the next morning, I still do that. Also we got pine trees instead of frasier firs, I still get one if I can afford to. Good egg nog is a must. Mom would make a huge meal and tons of sweet goodies for Christmas day, I still usually go to someones house or two for a big meal that day. My mom was big on desserts and goodies, so thats what I normally bring. I always make my moms chocolate marshmallow fudge every year, and sometimes other types. A lot of times I'll make Strawberry Salad, which really aint a salad, but its chopped up pretzels with butter and brown sugar baked as a crust, then a cool whip, cream cheese sugar layer in the middle and strawberries and strawberry jello on top, so good, and looks Christmasy lol. Sometimes I'll make Brandied Christmas Wreath cookies, they have brandy in them and orange zest, with a brandied icing, and candied red and green cherries to make the wreath. Look like this....

I'm dreaming of a Reich Christmas

With Nazi icons everywhere

With the Fuhrer waving

and Jews enslaving

Whilst we steal their silverware

I'm dreaming of a Reich Christmas

With bombs in London in every night

May the fires be many and bright

And may all our Aryans be white

I'm dreaming of a Reich Christmas

Where the Party's always right

May our ovens always ignite

And the English will give up the fight....

Aww you big old softy.   ac_blush

I'm dreaming of a Reich Christmas

With Nazi icons everywhere

With the Fuhrer waving

and Jews enslaving

Whilst we steal their silverware

I'm dreaming of a Reich Christmas

With bombs in London in every night

May the fires be many and bright

And may all our Aryans be white

I'm dreaming of a Reich Christmas

Where the Party's always right

May our ovens always ignite

And the English will give up the fight....

England would still be England if we'd sided with the National Socialists, as opposed to the multicultural, liberal hell hole it's turned into.

I thank my parents, my grandparents, my aunts and uncles and our dear family friends for giving me Christmas experiences that were memorable which I continue to carry with me today. Being the first in all, first child, first grandchild, first niece, it gave me the opportunity of a unique experience. I thank my entire music-oriented family for introducing me to Christmas music which continue to inspire me today. These are my favorites.

A tradition in my family is to be part of the Christmas concert. Around this time, we are getting ready for the concert by rehearsing regularly. Good times.

Yet dictatorial political infrastructure...its not all beer and skittles in Singapore. Criticising the government can still have consequences, and only one party has ruled since the 60's.

I'm not saying its bad...just that what works in Singapore may not suit westerners.

Christmas was only good when I was a younger child, living with my Grandparents...

My Grandmother would insist on real tree, and then decorate it with passion, using many decorations brought over from Germany.  She even had candleholders that would clip onto the branches, and small red, real candles would then be inserted and lit.  (Have the hose ready for that potential problem!  Don't even think you're allowed to import those here!)

Christmas would generally all be celebrated on the evening of the 24th...  Nothing much was done on the 25th, except for clean-up and relaxing.

Do not leave unattended!

When I went to the German Christmas Market in Vancouver with my ex a couple of years ago, I asked one of the table hosts (believe it or not, most are from Germany, and just travel here for the Market), if they are still available in Germany.  She said they are, and a few people still use them, but falling out of favour due to safety concerns...

Traditions

For years when I was young, my mother and I would always go out in the cold and by an expensive real tree, that would shed pine needles that I would step on, and were hard to get out of the carpet, only to toss it out in a month

When I got married My wife had a fake tree.  there were no pine needles to stick in our feet and in the carpet, it took no trips out in the cold to buy it cause its bought and paid for, its not a fire hazard, and when we're done with it, it goes right back in the basment till next year.

Here's to fake Christmas trees

For me it didnt. I tried a fake tree I borrowed from my aunt a few years ago, did it 2 years in a row. Took time to straighten and fluff the branches and assemble them all onto the pole, then decorate it. Then the cats would make the bottom ones bend lol. The country store I usually get a tree at is only a few minutes away, and they usually provide hot cider while you walk around. I usually let my son pick out 2 bags of homemade Christmas candy too there. I love the smell of the pine. I have led lights that go on the tree so not as much of a fire hazard. I toss it outside by my wood pile, and burn it when I get the chance    . I've seen some real nice fake trees though. This year I just did a small fake tree thats less than 2 feet tall. Was in storage, and I didnt have the money for a real one.

This is my git to the American people.

For individuals and families, the final Tax Cuts & Jobs Act:

✔lowers individual taxes

✔nearly doubles the standard deduction

✔expands the Child Tax Credit

✔repeals Obamacare's individual mandate

✔preserves the mortgage interest deduction
